It's the difficulty, obviously a happy ending for Twin Peaks, wouldn't be right, I know it would be shit, and yet I feel like I still want to see it.

The ending of the Return was a magnificent artistic statement and made perfect sense in the context of the show's plot and themes and Lynch's ideas... but I still really want to see more and want to see more of the characters getting the same happy ever after Ed and Norma got.

amputeeporn

Thrilling news, this. The Return was the last truly fascinating tv experience I had, and I remember the weeks in-between episodes, longing to know more.

Mister Six

Actually, if the anthology thing is correct then maybe a little catch-up and happy ending for Audrey would be good. If massively improbable.

mjwilson

Some rumours that this is not going forwards.

phantom_power

I've worked it out. Which popular show was set on Wisteria Lane? He is rebooting Desperate Housewives

Isn't it mid filming right now? Supposed to have been filming since May until about October or something.

Don't step on my hopes.

Custard

Hopefully it's just Lynch pulling a power move to get what he wants, like what he did with The Return

Rev+

Well the earlier rumour was that a lot of it had already been filmed quite a while back, that he'd gone back to the Inland Empire approach straight after finishing Twin Peaks and was filming bits and pieces to be stitched together later.  It's possible that Netflix have seen the results and are all like 'nah mate' but if anything exists it'll definitely find a home somewhere.

Where did you see the rumours, out of interest? I did a quick and lazy search but couldn't find anything unfortunately.

Nah, no evidence it has been filming. Scripts were copyrighted and trademarks issued for various titles, but after the apparent social media hinting earlier this year things seem to have died down. The Netflix insider on Reddit (he revealed the title prior to the copyright filing and online teasing) has now said there is no longer any documentation suggesting the show is going forward.

Mr Trumpet

I doubt David Lynch is leaving the house much right now, COVID would kill him dead in 0.00001 seconds

Thought I'd check up on how this was shaping up. Expected some exciting news but I'm so disappointed to hear this just might not get made.

Latest news is an interview with one of his cinematographers

QuoteFrequent David Lynch cinematographer Peter Deming on WISTERIA, 11/11/21:
"I wish I had some news; I don't. B/c of the worldwide pandemic—I think it was just starting pre-production. I had not started work on it yet. I'm assuming it'll come back to life at some point. Idk when."

That's a shame. Did it even get confirmed what is actually was/is?

Mister Six

No, but to be fair Lynch wouldn't have confirmed what it was even after it had aired.

Noodle Lizard

It's been cancelled!

(I have absolutely no reason to say that, but it makes the anticipation exciting)

Ja'moke

While this series might be cancelled, there are now rumours that there is a new David Lynch film to be screened at Cannes, starring Laura Dern.

QuoteMost surprisingly, according to two well-informed sources, there will even be a David Lynch feature film which has been completely off the radar and stars Laura Dern — either as a cameo or a supporting role — along with some other Lynch regulars.

Variety has always had this amazing semi-concussed house writing style, so that's quite normal for them.

There's been persistent rumours that Lynch has been up to something other than building swing-out wooden urinals in the last year or so, whether connected to the Netflix show or not, but an actual feature film would be quite surprising.  A short I could understand.

Had an idle thought the other day about how, with the exception of maybe one scene, Eraserhead resembles the kind of film that could be made in a lockdown bubble.  Fingers crossed for Eraserhead Goes Hawaiian with Jim Carrey.

Ja'moke

Lynch has denied this film rumour in a new interview with EW:

Quote"This is the part of the interview when I usually ask people what they're working on next, but I was excited to see news yesterday that you have a new film coming out?"

"[Laughs] I have no new film coming out. That's a total rumor. So there you are. It is not happening. I don't have a project. I have nothing at Cannes. It's unfortunate. It got built up that people thought, "Oh, that'd be nice." But there is something new, but it's not mine. I don't know whose it is. They say there's something new at Cannes, and they don't say whose it is, and some people thought it was my film, but it's not. So we'll wait and see, and see whose it is."

Rev+

Yes Dave, it's possible that other people might have films at Cannes.

He's so clearly got something and is chatting shit, but I really do doubt it's a feature film.  Possibly an extended preview of something.  Apparently Madchen Amick posted a picture of wisteria to a social media thing yesterday, but I don't bother with that kind of thing.

Ja'moke

Maybe it's a TV pilot, and so technically not a "film".

Ja'moke

Well, he wasn't lying I guess. No Lynch film announced on the Cannes line-up.

The Cannes director alluded to more films being added to the lineup next week, at one point referencing films he "couldn't announce" and crossing something out in his notes. From the weird wording of Lynch's denial in the AV Club and EW interviews, it's clear he is aware of something being announced. From that we can conclude  he's either involved with a film directed by someone else, or he's lying about it not being his own project.

If it was merely a Lynch produced film, e.g his old editor's forthcoming 'The Happy Worker', then there is no reason Thierry wouldn't be able to announce it. Nobody would give a shit. The same is true for his daughters films, or the other type of films he's had a producer credit on in the past. It could be Spielberg's new film in which Lynch cameo, but then how could such a major misunderstanding occur with Variety's sources? Confusing s producer credit for a director's credit sure, but confusing a cameo role for a directors credit? Nah. So based on the evidence it's a Lynch film alright, and he just wants to announce it on his own terms. Give it a week.

Rev+

Way too early for the Spielberg thing to be screening, I'd have thought - didn't shooting for that end pretty recently?  Completely agree that he just doesn't want the Cannes line-up announcement to be the way he introduces 'Swing-out Wooden Urinal:  The Musical' to the world.

Variety just published an interview with the Cannes programmer:

QuoteAlthough theatrical admissions have been falling I've been stunned by how excited people have been on social media when we made our predictions. Especially with David Lynch! By the way, where is his mystery project?

At Cannes, we don't talk about what we're not showing, we talk about what we are showing.

But he has a new project, right?

(Fremaux smiles coyly.)
