Yes there are plenty of ideologues, my point states I would be put off their comedy if it were their personal foundation, it wouldn't have to necessarily be present in their comedy(same on the far/hard right/dont care about semantics police), hence me quoting Icehaven. I think in comedy you have to find someone personable to find a natural humour connection.

Yes there are plenty of ideologues because everyone is driven by a set of beliefs, especially the ones who say they're not. Heck, this thread exists because an ideologue didn't like the comedy output from a broadcaster.
And yeah that's a general truism about comedy that a stand-up should have you onside to make you laugh.

I'm just questioning whether the much rumoured but rarely seen hard left identity politics stand up that's supposedly killing comedy actually exists or is just a boogieman made up by mediocre hacks as a reason they're not more successful.

Because the likes of Doyle et al claim they're the death of comedy without ever defining what hard left/identity politics or heaven forbid "woke" comedy actually is.

It's Ben Elton saying "Mrs Thatch" in 1986. These people are still angry about that, probably.

Good point. Brexit and Trump has empowered some right leaning folk to become more vocal about immigration and critical of left leaning comedy. Comedy punches up and targets that lack empathy are easier. So Trump and Boris are comedy gold, but Gandhi or Oxfam not so easy. These people that criticise left leaning comedy normally can't create good comedy, so should stop criticizing imo.

After his Edinburgh show last year it wouldn't surprise me at all to find our Cochrane is a COVID denier.

Big coincidence, but I'm currently stood less than 5m (but more than 2m) away from him and I'm pleased to reveal he's fully masked up.

I mean the moment any comedian starts going political regardless of the slant I'm usually bored because let's be honest it doesn't go beyond political humour people are creating in their own living rooms during regular conversation.

Wrong.

Why isn't this right wing comedian on the BBC, his material bangs!

Also, fat people are draining the NHS of resources, oh, my sides have just split! Now I'm a burden on the NHS!

There will always be a market for "cruel" mean hearted, punching down comedy, for sure. Some people enjoy the shock stuff. I think there's something to be said for being shocking and controversial, but I (probably like many of us on here) grew out of enjoying stuff like Family Guy or online prank stuff because we realised that it was shitty and hurtful to others, plus it's kinda easy and boring to just be a cunt to people.

I think that's the general difference between right and left comedy / ideology: Lefties tend to care about others / things outside themselves, right wingers are selfish cunts, no?

That Tony Law Unleashed set was pretty limp. He didn't even fully commit to that Brexit joke. I was more annoyed at the shit camp gay accent he kept leaning on more than anything else. It's that kind of thing I remember doing when I had to say something awkward to someone and was nervous: Switch into a camp American voice to soften the blow, make light of the situation.

That doesn't even really work or scan. When cunts think of a fat person taking up space in hospital, do they really picture someone in their 90s? Surely the point of that kind of lazy fatphobia is that you're monstering someone young who has developed health problems prematurely due to their weight.

bgmnts

That is an absolute desperate joke that doesn't really work.

Just leave comedy to left wingers, right wing nasty cunts have literally everything, regardless of whether they know it or not, but that outlook just doesn't work with comedy.

Nothing screams "these are my genuine opinions rather than a strategy aimed at getting me some notoriety" quite like pigeon-holing yourself as a specific type of comedian in your handle.

Cuntbait in the mold of Laurence Fox, Andrew Doyle as Titania McGrath etc... all those right wing grifters. Say something morally abhorrent, wait for the one in 10,000 anonymous replies calling you out to be nasty enough, then do the 'so much for the tolerant left' schtick and wait for the phone to ring.

JamesTC

I think the joke is that they are old and fat so he doesn't care twice as much.

Fambo Number Mive

On his twitter feed he tries to link socialised medicine and the clapping to the USSR, and claims that this wouldn't happen under privatised medicine, ignoring that clapping took place for nurses in many countries with many different healthcare systems, including the USA. The fact that the NHS was brought in in the late 1940s and there has been no clapping for nurses until 2020 also disproves his claims.

He also retweets someone who says socialism doesn't work because his cousin in Venezuela has to get water from a tank on his roof, as if socialism would mean the UK, one of the wealthiest countries in the world, would become like the much poorer Venezuela just because it adopted a similar economic system. The tweet also ignores that many people living in capitalist countries have issues accessing safe clean water, such as the residents of Flint.

idunnosomename

Genuinely i do not think that nurses hold the hands of dying fat 98 year olds as part of their jobs

Captain Z

They also tend not to 'moan on social media' unless it's in direct response to being interviewed or patronised with clapping.

You do see nurses "moaning" on social media but it usually about working a 12 hour shift where they have had to watch lots of people needlessly suffer and die, often alone, rather than just being in the presence of an elderly person dying

JamesTC

If I ever see him I will ask him to do his old fat man nurse joke and then stand in stoney faced silence.

Is that guy not a right wing version of Titania McGrath by an unfunny leftie?

His name looks like "leaky arse"

As a generally left wing person I'd feel quite put off* a comedian if I found out they harboured strong right wing views and it just wasn't apparent in their material, however I can't see the same being said by right wing types if they found out a comedian they liked was left wing (and again their politics doesn't come through in their act.) So basically yes. It's hard to imagine right wingers saying "Oh I used to LOVE him but then I found out he's pro-immigration and believes in free healthcare and I just can't laugh at him anymore." Although increasingly I may be wrong about that.

Pretty sure you are wrong. 'Left wing' comics and celebrities get cancelled all the time by right wingers, it's just that no one really pays attention.

Look at any news story about a comedian or other public personality saying something vaguely liberal and the Daily Mail comments/twitter replies will be full of people saying "well there's another show I won't be watching", "I used to like him but turns out he's just another lefty luvvy snowflake", "thanks for the warning! Guess I'll be cancelling my whatever subscription" etc. Just look at the reaction to Rufus Hound having a pop at the Tories on Dancing on Ice yesterday.

Finally someone is having a go at the nurses. It's about time.

At least have a crack at them doing shitty dance routines in full PPE.
Or how they aren't as sexy as he was led to believe by teenage lad mags etc.
I mean, this stuff isn't fucking hard.

I saw this guy at the Fringe a few years ago doing his "Right Wing Comedian" act and genuinely thought that's what it was for maybe the first half hour. From what I remember by the end he'd dispensed with any pretence of doing jokes and was just banging on about the woke feminist millenials.

Poirots BigGarlickyCorpse

lads lad you're being very ufair to Mr. Arse, his twitter feed is just pure comedy gold

"pronouns: ha/ha"

"the free stuff socialists offer is the cheese in a mousetrap"

"the early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese"

"god modern music is rubbish, music peaked thirty years ago didn't it"

"some birds are called tits, isn't that hilarious"

idunnosomename

Maybe it's a funny leftist doing a parody of what it would be like if Andrew Doyle was left-wing and did an unfunny parody of the right? if so it's funny, that fat 98-old year is so terrible it did give me the giggles

Pink Gregory

Things that are stolen from us being returned to us is not 'free stuff'.

And of course, Mr Kearse's reward this week is a plum spot on Five Live with Nihal and Dane Baptiste.
