ColdPlay are Sigur Ros for squares

There's a song on a perfume ad at the moment that for some reason caught my ear, while I strongly disliked how it was done  - wispy girl singing over even wispier music - the tune itself seemed to have something, so I looked it up and it turned out to be called Team and is by Lorde, who I'd heard of but never heard anything by. Her version (of her own song) is even fucking worse than the ad version but luckily I managed to find a few decent covers on youtube so I can enjoy it and forget the shiteness of it's origins. So Lorde, for obviously being capable of writing great songs then ruining them by recording them herself.

It was probably a thing five years before the single came out. She always jumps on the bandwagon years too late. Which is a bit sad really when you think of her early days.

To be fair to Madonna Vogue was released six months before the film Paris Is Burning which celebrated the NYC ball scene and brought further attention to it, so she was pretty quick. Malcolm Mclaren beat her to it by releasing Deep In Vogue ten months before her in mid '89 and is arguably a better track, especially the excellent Willian Orbit/Mark Moore mix.

Notice no one mentioning BTS here.  Probably wise.

Vogue is like the second-best music video of all time after Thriller, according to MTV. Why? It's a shit video.

kalowski

Lots to agree with so far. Well done CaB.
Glad someone mentioned the Chilli Peppers, they are definitely on the list.

I thought I was probably wrong ( I vogueing knew it was a thing), I just wanted to get my petty snipe at Madonna in.

The Stone Roses and any of the professional northern monkey man football wanker brigade. I'd call it the UK equivalent to hair metal except that's not entirely fair on hair metal. "Oh but they're working class". So was/is Jim Davidson for fucks sake. No excuse for being shit, especially those groups' singularly stomach churning, worst of both worlds combination of arrogant thuggishness and spinelessly wimpy music

Always hated the early to mid 2000s r'n'b thing: gruesome audio soft porn like Usher, Akon, and so on, but that seems to have receded in the public consciousness a little, so fair fucks

Red Hot Chili Peppers had some good songs a hell of a long time ago; Give It Away, Suck My Kiss, Under The Bridge, Rollercoaster of Love for instance. I think maybe we need to get Anthony Keidis back on smack. Fuck off with your zephyr. Californication is good too. But yeah anything they've released since Californication has been overplayed awfulness. By The Way perhaps isn't incredibly bad.

If it wasn't for let's dance (A Nile rogers joint) I would agree wholeheartedly.

I thought we knew all K-pop was shit, so there was no need.

Re: RHCP - I really like Blood Sugar Sex Magik and the criminally underrated One Hot Minute. Pretty much everything since then... no. A staggeringly dull band. And I can't decide whether Anthony Kiedis is worse at singing or writing lyrics.

Any of these modern rappers you get these days with no tunes, loads of autotune, and tattoos all over their face. They seem to die every week, too.
Really laughed at this.

To add: I saw RHCP live at a festival and they were staggeringly bad. Outrageously sub-par, like they were daring the organizers to withhold their payment for being so utterly without merit.

Phil Collins - though I accept he's done some good stuff. I think it's more the man himself. I just can't get past it

He seemed like a bit of a prick at the time, but in reality he was done dirty by the Sun over his divorce, it's not his fault Peter Gabriel left Genesis and the rest of them wanted to carry on, and if you're a balding, ugly short-arse who's hurtling toward 40 and you somehow find yourself one of the biggest pop stars in the world, I wouldn't blame you for riding that horse as hard and as far as you could before it inevitably drops down dead.

Yes!! I didn't put him on my list because I don't hate him, but he is very boring musically.

I agreed with you until you started naming songs from 1991 and later. Mothers Milk is the cut off point IMO.

Yes! Sound & Vision is the only great Bowie song. I'd happily never hear the rest again.

Chris Rea - for me he's the soundtrack to never-ending car sickness. Just grating and bland in every way. He's ruined shopping at Iceland for me too. And Christmas.

I don't mind Chris Rea, but for some reason I've always subconsciously associated him with shopping at Iceland: to be specific, the low-level depressing feeling of being dragged round Iceland by my parents on a Sunday afternoon in the early 90s, whilst Rea plays over the in-store radio.

I've never fully known why I've associated him with this, but now you've mentioned that I have to ask: why do you associate him with Iceland too? Was his music used in an advert or something?

Fr.Bigley

I prefer his welsh cousin Dai.

Driving Home For Christmas was used in Iceland's Christmas ads for a few years.

Plus there's that really cheap video he did for Shelter where he's dancing around with the sort of low-rent celebs you'd expect to see in an Iceland ad; Lionel Blair, Gail Porter, Mike Read and the like.

The man just oozes discount frozen food retail from every pore.

EDITCUNT: Low-rent twice in one sentence, Jesus fucking wept.

After seeing Kate Bush mentioned, I told myself that I wouldn't question anybody's opinion in this thread - it is about our personal can't-stand-em feelings after all.

But to describe the music evolving across albums like Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, and Station to Station, culminating with the zippy-zaps of Berlin, as boring? I am intrigued. Bad, annoying, not-for-me I'd fathom, but boring?

But then I suppose there are many musicians I consider boring, and I'm not about to spend time deep-diving their back catalogues to find the interesting bits.
