100% certain this will come to pass, because as noted above there are enough thick and/or nasty people in this country to get it across the line. Patel is absolutely fucking evil.

Seems unlikely according to this article

Yeah, I don't think the bulk of more "centrist" Tory MP's would back it. Centrists in this context really just meaning neoliberals who don't outwardly hate gay and black people.

Coalition will be the same too: working class social conservatives, ex-Labour from abandoned industrial/port towns and old fashioned conservatives.

They've already been softened up by enough Islamic terror stories and the fact our state literally murders people in other countries whenever it feels like it to be in to ''an eye for an eye''.

I have a feeling it will be too much of a push to come to pass - this is one topic you would find nearly no opposition MPs siding with the government over, while I think there is enough of a cohort of Tory MPs who are anti-death penalty to see this fail.

However the fact it could even be aired as a potential thing to occur is absolutely dreadful. Next time I hear someone is up for taking their own life I'll be less stocked with reasons why not to.

Incidentally - what the fuck are the left doing? The right are already onto a series of post-Brexit projects to drive a wedge between any left-leaning coalition. Without some fight back and signal interference we are going to end up like a sad divorced US state even more quickly than we thought.

Would some be persuaded if enough of their constituents did?

I can imagine the DUP backing it, and I can also imagine Farage starting the Bring Back The Death Penalty Party to challenge Tory MPs who didn't support it.

This came from some rando Twitter account? even if it was in the Sunday papers, I'd assume it's just to get the tabloids' juices flowing and create another battle of the culture war. she might want a policy paper on it because she's thick. it wouldn't pass anyway so I wouldn't worry about it too much

These rando twitter accounts are toes dipped into the bath.

Which is why they'd bother with a referendum.  That way, it becomes the sacred will of the People.  Posing the question to the HoC - Do you think we should vote for holding a referendum on this? - will provoke almost unanimous Starmeresque fence-sitting, at best, abstentions.

These cunts, the ones we're hoping will save us, are all about nothing, doing nothing, believing nothing and letting Britain be turned into a hellhole whilst keeping their hands immaculate and their seats warm.

Isn't it quite possible that somebody has made this up?

There's a decent documentary on Sky Documentaries about Dorothy Otnow Lewis and her work with death row criminals. It made me think about the justification needed to convict even mass murderers with a death penalty. What would it add to society, unless there's a shake up of the whole legal system and harsher punishments for crimes that wouldn't warrant such punishment. It would just look odd in our current legal system to add on the death penalty.

Possibly, but she's been publicly for the death penalty before she was home secretary. She was on some thing arguing with Ian Hislop about it.

I agree, if it ever goes to a public referendum. Never mind murder - literally anything would pass a referendum in this country as long as you manage to make it about one or more of the following (and the people advocating the death penalty definitely would):

  • Immigration
  • Terrorism/extremism (particularly but not exclusively Islamic)
  • Child abuse

Didn't we execute Gary Glitter a few years ago?

Cold Meat Platter

Would this apply to Scotland? I assume not.
That Hislop Question Time clip lays bare just how fucking thick she is. Cringeworthy.

Just as the UK will never leave the EU and we are immune to fascism?

Aaron500

Under the fabulous, glorious Brexit deal what are brave Boris sorted out, we are still bound by ECHR rules, and one of those human rights is the right to not be murdered by the state. So it's a non-starter.

You couldn't make it up, hell in a handcart, I'd pull the bloody lever myself.

But having said that, what would the EU do, kick us out?

BlodwynPig

Could be drafted in to help with this policy paper according to my contract.

If you get asked for ideas on how to off those marked out for judicial murder, may I suggest a fight to the death with the Home Secretary (whoever that may be) and God's Will be Done.  Amen.

Fair point. If it goes to a referendum, it will definitely pass.

Nothing says "country on the up" more than reintroducing the death penalty.

chveik

I'm not categorically against it, but only if a socialist government is in charge

evilcommiedictator

Bung Boris a bob for a balaclava and a bayonet to Get Murdering Murderers Done

Urinal Cake

So for the rapists, pedos and murderers- that's Prince Andrew. I'm in for a good ole beheading.

This is how the forum first reacted when brexit was first mooted. Be careful what you wisecrack at.

Jittlebags

I support it for people who put their dog eggs in a bag (probably to show onlookers they are a responsible shit machine owner), but then tie the bag onto a branch or fence when no one is looking. Fucking dirty fucking fuckers the fucking lot of them.

But are they tied by the perpetrators, or by passersby who pick them up from the ground but don't want to carry them around?

Agreed in principle though. Flytippers and litterers are scum, subhuman scum.

i think thats why they've made it up. literally there was a "little bird told me" tweet. i dont think priti has any particular policies she believes in, she just likes being told what to achieve then breaking balls/driving people to suicide to get it done

Elderly Sumo Prophecy

Who's Rumour Patel? Sounds like an HS Art character.
