I think we left the nebulous "defending people from hypothetical boogeymen" defence behind some time ago. At this point, I don't think the big man himself could really explain what was compelling him to plumb lower and lower depths.

If you have a very warped understanding of the world, you could see how it was important to protect people from going into specific bogs (as long as you were very careful to remain ignorant about how it's a bit more complicated than that). What possible reason could you have to screenshot a queer teenager's dating profile and post it for (I assume) gleeful mocking from a tiny cohort of unhappy bigots? Does he want this person to remain closeted? What is his remedy here? It is indefensible on so many levels.

Presumably no one is asking him to do all this (quite the opposite I suspect) and he's in his 50s so he should know better. He's not stupid - how does he defend all this to himself? He's just gotten his first (negative) media coverage from doing this so he's doubling down, but like... why? It's a pattern of behaviour going back to twitter - taking this incident in isolation I'd say he loves the attention and the dopamine from arguing and making enemies.

Thing is, you can't take this in isolation can you? He's been a bullying, nasty piece of work for some time and with quarantine, the family leaving, and being so incredibly online; I think he's sort of lost his grip on the real world (or at least, societal norms).

I don't think it's terribly nebulous and it's not a defence. Understanding why people are acting in the way they are is not the same as justifying their actions.

I think this is a lot more nebulous. People mostly enjoy feeling right and righteous, and I think that's an important part of the explanation for his increasingly unpleasant behaviour and the vicious circularity that he's brought himself to.

Negative reaction in something like The Metro serves to confirm his self-appraisal as one of very few people seriously engaged enough with the suffering of women to deal with this supposed horror being visited on them.

He believes that this person is a man who has adopted the trappings of a particular identity because of an appraisal of its social value rather than being genuinely moved by their own sense of self. "Closeted" isn't a concept he would apply to this individual.
