Brundle-Fly

I actually gasped and pointed at the screen when I saw them. School the day after that premiered must've been amazing. I well remember seeing a single nipple on an advert for some skin cream (or sutin) when I was about 12 or 13 and it was 'round the classrooms like wildfire the day after.

Pardon the pun, but really its completely non-titillating. Just a topless woman innocently frolicking in a swimming pool that you'd see every day on a package holiday in Spain or the South Of France. It's funny when we say (me too, pardon the pun) 'Oo, you'd never get away with that today' when we live in the era of  Naked Attraction.

I know it's context and a watershed issue but the 'erection section' on Top Of The Pops, The Kenny Everett Video Show, Are You Being Served? and The Benny Hill Show were far more raunchy than just a flash of some nips.

I Dream of Jeannie was another one with hidden lyric :

QuoteJeannie, fresh as a daisy
Just love how she obeys me
Does things that just amaze me so

She smiles, presto, the rain goes
She blinks, up come the rainbows
Cars stop, even the train goes slow
(When she goes by)

She paints sunshine on every rafter
Sprinkles the air with laughter
We're close as a quarter after three

There's no one like Jeannie
I'd introduce her to you
But it's no use, sir
Cause my Jeannie's in love with me

Here's someone having a crack at it : The hidden lyrics of I Dream of Jeannie

Oh, how could I have forgotten: the magnificent Marching There and Back

If you want drum fills, there be drum fills. And when it breaks out at 1:13 it's pure euphoria

Fair enough, I suppose I did imply that the programme was called 'Marching There and Back'.

I'd like to think that there's a Kim Carnes demo tape somewhere, with Michael Rodd Hair on it.

The theme from the 1997 Berserk Anime, "Tell Me Why" by Penpals, with it's upbeat tone and Engrish lyrics, is so out of place, especially in the later episodes of the show, that I utterly adore it.

Honorable mention to "Forces", the music that plays over most of the episode previews.

Glebe

Quote from: Glebe on December 30, 2020, 01:49:08 AMThe Equalizer TV theme - Stewart Copeland.

Didn't realise that was composed by Copeland, actually.

Star Wars: Droids (Outro).

Shit cartoon, but that was a catchy little ditty.

Flippin' 'eck, and it turns out Copeland did the Droids theme too!

It really does beggar belief that was the theme for the news, doesn't it? For decades! News of the Aberfan disaster was introduced by that, was it? That dingly dell gnome music? The IRA mainland bombing campaigns of the 70s were soundtracked by that, were they? That music has the gravitas of a bashful cartoon lamb. Why'd it take from 1955 to 1982 before someone thought "Do you know what....this might sound too frivolous." I mean, I can only guess The Falklands War but it's not like nothing bad happened between the Suez Crisis and then. I guess it may have helped make the winter of discontent seem more like a bike ride to the beach with mater and pater and a hamper of scones with clotted cream and jam. Insanity.

If you like Denton & Cook's Quiller theme, give Soundhog's extended edit a listen.

Richard Denton & Martin Cook were also responsible for the previously-posted late 70s synth dreamscape Tomorrow's World theme, The minimalist funk of The Great Egg Race, the Floyd-esdque Theme From Hong Kong Beat (a  show they provided all the music for). The Beeb put out an album of their TV themes which can be listened to here.

I haven't watched much of it, but the opening theme seems to be at total odds with the music used in the show itself, which features Eastern European/Russian folk music a lot. Famouly they used the Finnish folk tune Säkkijärven Polkka as diagetic music (one of the tank crew plays it on a zither as they enter a battle)

Another recent banger of an anime opening theme is Koi no Uta from Tonikaku Kawaii (Fly Me To The Moon) which mixes traditional Japanese music and Trap.

Funnily enough, I nominated The Great Egg Race only last week on the 1980 section in the alternative history of pop thread. I have the D& C LP it is good. Thanks for the Soundhog link.

I'm surprised we've not yet had Eagles' excellent Journey of the Sorcerer, otherwise known as the theme to Hitchhiker's Guide.

I also like Mood Mosaic's A Touch Of Velvet, A Sting Of Brass, from Musikladen, and the truly menacing synth rock of Casualty.

But the odd one out is a rare version of the theme to the TV adaptation of the Cardcaptors manga, which only aired a scant number of times on CITV. It's some obscure French house-pop track but it's so energetic, while being hauntingly beautiful.

I've been watching The Witches and the Grinnygog on YouTube, it was a childhood favourite and the theme tune is lovely.

Another few faves that I don't think have been mentioned so far:
Farmhouse Kitchen - Fruity Flute by Reg Wade
Paint Along With Nancy - Supersoundic #3 by Henrik Neilsen
The Book Tower - Andrew & Julian Lloyd Webber's Variations 19,20 & 5 (based on Paganini's 24th Caprice - the Variations album also spawned the South Bank Show theme)
Picture Box - Manège by Structures Sonores Lasry-Baschet (contains bonus Quentin Smirhes).
It's worth anybody's time looking further into the works of the Baschet brothers and Jaques and Yvonne Lasry.  Francois Baschet was a sculptor and his brother Bernard was and engineer and together with the husband and wife composer and organist Lasrys they designed a whole orchestra of musical instruments that were more like sculptures or works of art. Here's a video of someone playing the Cristal Baschet.

Another couple of classic anime themes:
Tokimeki Tonight end theme - Super Love Lotion by Harumi Kamo, a Moroder-esque disco banger from 1982
The first half of the series Welcome To The NHK had great opening and closing themes (the second half of the series takes a more serious turn so the themes changed). The opening theme was Puzzle by ROUND TABLE & Nino, a jaunty number that doesn't really hint that it's a story about a paranoid schizophrenic shut-in. The end credits got the far more appropriate hard rock of Odoru Akachan Ningen (Dancing Baby Human) by Kenji Ohtsuki & Fumihiko Kitsu

The only thing I know about that is it's got Adam Woodyatt in it, captured in one of the rare moments of his life when he wasn't playing Ian Beale.

Now THAT is a tune I remember hearing recently as incidental music in a couple of episodes of The Sweeney.

My contribution to this thread must be: Accroche-ti Caroline, aka the theme to Vision On. Sorry I'm posting on my phone so linking to it is really really difficult but hopefully you can find it.

I used to love the 'maze' bed from the rubbish Beeb daytime quiz show "Four Square", a staple of sick days from school when "Going for Gold" wasn't on.

I'm constantly surprised at the stuff which apparently exists on the internet, because here it is:

I know it's Thomas Newman and it's multi-award winning but the theme from 'Six Feet Under' is just superb - a perfect mix of absurdity and melancholy, somehow managing to sound reassuring and unsettling at the same time. JUST LIKE DEATH.
