Is Film '84 (etc)a special version of I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free by Nina Simone or just the intro?

No sound here so can't look it up.

Anyway it's good.

It's the Billy Taylor version I think.

Black Books - ace Tom Waits pastiche and a rather bad ass slice of guitar composition/playing

Trailer Park Boys - real touch of class that. Anyone else would've done some sort of wackedy schmackedy thing with quick cuts of the characters being crazy, instead you get a gentle, tip toeing tune with cinematic sepia shots. Let's you know up front that the show has a heart, which you might otherwise miss on first viewing

Apologies if it's been mentioned but 'Battle Of The Planets'

Awesome. Strings and horn section (yes, yes her knickers) together.

Higher quality stereo version (without the VO) here. The break with the swooping strings is very reminiscent of Henry Mancini's Charlie's Angels theme. Hoyt Curtin's BotP theme tune was one of the few changes Sandy Frank made for the better from the source material (I'm looking at you, 7-Zark-7) - the original Gatchaman theme (Destroy Galactor! by Bob Sakuma) was very 'of it's time'.

Bad Ambassador

Tomorrow's World was mentioned before, but stopped short of the Chris Blackwell mid-90s version, which is the definitive version for me.

There was also mention of The South Bank Show, but no theme. SHAME ON YOU.

And a favourite of mine. The 999 theme seems to have been written by someone who thought the Casualty theme was too laid back. In retrospect it sounds like music from the Saw films.

Is the original intended effect of sepia supposed to portray something as "rose-tinted"? That's definitely how I always saw the opening titles of TPB - an idealistic depiction of quiet, humble working class residency, a calm oasis plopped in the middle of the storm of the actual show. This is often played to maximum effect with the pre-credits opening scene which usually cuts to the blissful titles right after something totally chaotic or heavily sweary occurs.

I've noticed the art or science of creating incredibly catchy theme tunes has been lost over the years. I haven't sen many shows in the past decade or so that have great title music.

I don't know:

The Good Fight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Gr1lTGUMeg

Parks And Recreation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wI7f4CgATiE

Jessica Jones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmUQAZ7K3co

The Mollusk

Extreme Dinosaurs has just about the most kickass theme song for a '90s cartoon about anthropomorphic crusaders against evil. The intros to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Street Sharks and Biker Mice From Mars are all fucking wet blankets compared to this absolute ripper.

Are we allowed to do gameshows? Because that, for me, is the real gold standard of scientifically-created, catchy, instantly recognisable tunes.

As for cartoons, I actually really like the Nickolodean TMNT theme:

And of course, nobody does insane cartoon themes quite like the Nihongo:

Quite possibly, for me there was a sense that it had some other purpose/effect that I couldn't put my fi ger on so maybe it's that.

Here's the actual bloody links which I forgot last time:
