Sturmwind shmup goodness

Probably my favourite indie shmup (and the DC has a lot), released for the Dreamcast in 2013 (with the DC killed by Sega in 2000, of course). Took 10 years for fans to produce, and is a truly stunning game IMO. I just discovered it was remastered in HD for the Switch, PC and Xbox One in Nov 2019. I downloaded it for the XB1- great value & recommended for a tenner!

Really? I can't remember having anything nice to say when I tried it.
I'll definitely give it another chance.

"Best indie shmup ever" is pushing it, pinball!
There's no nice way of saying that it's not even the best indie shmup I've tried today, and "Zen-ichi" was free!

The XB1 version seems pretty good. I like the bassy music and yellow sun effects, for example. Better than most shmups for sure. The ports to DC from NGDev (another German publisher) are also generally great. The DC remains, amazingly after all these years, a popular console for indie games. Lovely little console too.

Chedney Honks

On XB1, I'd recommend Battle Garegga and Natsuki Chronicles. The former is one of the best ever games full stop, and the latter is a very solid horizontal bullet hell.

Can't argue with that, and the yellow sun effect was certainly distracting.

Do you know about Super XYX that released this year? From Gryzor, the Neo XYX guy. Good fun - https://store.steampowered.com/app/654500/Super_XYX/

I haven't tried that yet, but XYX is probably the best NGDev shmup, so I will do. I'm old school, so have the original NGDev MVS carts for a NeoGeo cab (and Omega MVS 'console') :-) Also their other games such as the long-awaited Metal Slug-like run 'n' gun Krautbuster (MVS & AES carts).

I also like the various ODEs for DC etc to get 1000s of games on an SD card/HD, but nothing is like spinning up a disc!

I don't really get excited about running games on the old hardware physically myself, though I totally get the appeal, but I do really love devs using those old systems as a way of restricting themselves, forcing creativity.

Fire lancer for the wonderswan, I wouldn't dream of playing anything on a wonderswan, but emulated on pc, it's fantastic! - http://firelancer.ws/

I played some nes homebrew caravan game for a high score competition once and I don't know how many decent shmups there are on the nes, but the nes slowdown just felt so right in shmupland! -

That reminds me, I still haven't tried Flight of Pigarus yet, for the SMS. I'll have to rectify that tomorrow! - https://www.smspower.org/Homebrew/FlightOfPigarus-SMS

What do you think of the whole MiSTer FPGA thing? You'd rather have the original hardware still? Is that still too close to emulation for you?

Pinball

Emulators can be glitchy, and the consoles better, sometimes far, far better e.g. Atari Jaguar. Plug in an Everdrive and you're away e.g. for the Jag - https://www.retrohq.co.uk/products/atari-jaguar-gd-flash-cartridge

But emulation of more mainstream consoles like Megadrive and SNES is fairly perfect, of course.

As for FPGA, it can definitely be better than original consoles e.g. due to PCM stereo audio and upscaled HDMI video. An example would be Analogue's consoles e.g. Sega Sg [Megadrive]. Then there's Terraonion's MegaSD which is an FPGA cart acting as an Everdrive for roms but also perfect FPGA of a MegaCD. I use this (plugged into a Mega Sg) and can play Megadrive, MegaCD, SMS, GG from a single SD card. Lovely.

FPGA and MiSTer are definitely the way forward, and I think all these technologies are great in parallel. I haven't needed MiSTer personally, as my NeoGeo needs are covered, and Analogue and Terraonion etc cover everything else :-) All that said, there remains a lot of stuff where the only (and certainly best) option is still original hardware e.g. arcade systems such as Sega Naomi and Lindbergh, and consoles such as Xbox, Xbox360 and PS1-3 (which can have roms added via HD).

Did you see that Paprika has finally come out (after 3-4 years) for the Megadrive? As you say, limiting it to the original hardware's capabilities to give a Megadrive Streets of Rage-type experience is great :-)

The Jag emulator is missing most of the games, and many don't work?

Just the idea of anyone valuing anything on the Jaguar at all, basically.

I think emulation can often-times be superior to the original hardware, but I sort of admire the stance of the hardcore hardware purists.

I'm assuming autocorrect has done you a disservice there and that was meant to be "paprium", no I'd never heard of it.
Can't decide whether calling your game "krautbuster" in 2020 is brave or stupid :D

I don't really get excited about belt scrollers and run n gun games to play those genres anything other than casually, to be honest, but aye, they do look decent!

heh, fair enough. It is very much a 'secondary' console, but has a few gems such as Tempest 2000 & Defender 2000 by Jeff Minter.  It's also a good illustration of crap emulation.

Yes, should be Paprium :-)

I guess NGDev get away with Krautbuster as they're German, but yes, a curious choice of name. Do you like Metal Slug? Similar type of thing, almost a sequel.
