Got a second-hand PS4, kind of regret it

Hey!

So I haven't had a game system since around 2002, which was a PS2. I sacked them off after GTA Vice City and Metal Gear 2 because it mortified me to realise how many hours went down the drain on them - but...

A Christmas spent separate from my loved ones, with little to mark it other than EVEN MORE BOOZE seemed to call for some kind of comfort treat - so I found a second hand PS2 and got it.

And I tried to play WWE2K18 to relive my wrestling days on the PS2 and just found it so unenjoyably complex and tedious and slow - I'm not sure after tonight's third attempt at it that I'll ever go back. Then I got a game called Dear Esther where, it turns out, you don't do ANYTHING except walk around listening to some bad exposition until it's over. I didn't get far.

It's not all doom and gloom, because I got some old megadrive games on a disc that have been a hundred times more fun - but I must admit I feel like I'm missing something...

I guess I'm asking for advice - what are some fun things I can do? Playing people online isn't it - if I had friends I wouldn't need the damn thing. I'd just like some fun games where I won't have to pour hours in before I can even (for example) strike one punch in a wrestling match. Perhaps the one exception where I wouldn't mind blowing some hours is the latest GTA game if it's worth it?

Games I could play with my partner would be a bonus, as we both sort of thought it would be a lot more fun than it was. So far the only thing we've actually enjoyed on there are quiz games, which doesn't seem right.

I'm broadly thinking that this probably wasn't the right purchase. I wonder if the Wii is more simple and fun? I feel like I'm too old to learn the more detailed gamer language of the PS4. I'm 34 years old.

First things first: WWE2K18 is one of the worst games in the series so it's not that odd that you aren't having fun playing it. WWE2K20 is even worse due to bugs and glitches. If you want to play a fun wrestling game I'd recommend either WWE2K16, WWE2K17 or WWE2K19.

For now I would recommend to get Grand Theft Auto (quite a good game) and the week long free trial for PS Now to try a few recent PS4 games on it and see which games you like. There are also PS2 and PS3 games on there.

For more tips about games and such: Which genre did you enjoy on the PS2? Can see if I can make a list with games that you might enjoy.

Will depend on genres, but between God of War, Bloodborne, Dragon Quest XI S, Persona 5 Royale, Metal Gear Solid V, Witcher 3, The Witness, Spiderman, GTAV, etc you can't go too wrong.

I would echo Timothy that you picked a bad WWE game to start off with. Even 2K16 doesn't capture, for me, the simplicity of the THQ Smackdown vs Raw games.

Dear Esther divides even people who like walking simulators. Edith Finch is the best of this genre, but it sounds like they're just not for you.

Grand Theft Auto V is absolutely worth your time if you like those games. I played it again this year thinking it'd be a bit rubbish with a modern eye and I wouldn't mind if they stopped making them, but I really enjoyed it. The PS4 version has a bit more content and a first person mode beyond performance upgrades over the PS3/360 versions.

Overcooked 1 + 2 are great local multiplayer games. The fun sort of stressful. There are tons of local multiplayer games, it just depends on what you like; Personally I've enjoyed Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, Gang Beasts, Stardew Valley, Payday 2, and the Tony Hawk remaster. Have a look at the PS Store or best of lists online to figure out what would suit you both.

The Wii and PS2 still stand up. Both are cheap secondhand. I'm in the same mindset as you, I think, and sold my PS4 to play those more.

Mister Six

Overcooked is a great call. The kind of game that will either strengthen your bond with your wife to unbreakable levels, or shatter your marriage completely.

If you liked System Shock-type FPS survival horror things, Prey is one of the best games of the past couple of decades. The Mooncrash DLC is fantastic too - basically a second game using the same engine to different purposes.

For something you can dip in and out of, Injustice 2 is a fantastic fighting game with stunning graphics that welcomes button-mashers like me as much as expert-level focused players. Get the Legendary Edition or whatever it's called with the bonus DLC fighters though.

Have a poke about on the PS Store - the US one, at least, has a big sale on. If the UK one doesn't yet, I imagine it will in January. If you like the look of anything and don't want to make an impulse purchase, shout on here for opinions.

Otherwise, what kind of games do/did you enjoy before? If you don't want to sink hours into something, stuff like GTA V and The Witcher 3 might be a bit much.

Timothy

Prey was good but quite a difficult game imo.

Dishonored, from the same developers, is brilliant and not as difficult. Might be better to start with Dishonored and then move onwards toward more complicated games like Prey and Alien Isolation.

If Im correct both are in PSNow. You can get a two week trial and try both those games for free. Not sure but I think Injustice (awesome game) is also available in PSNOW!

Is Prey difficult? One of the few games I've completed on the hardest settings and I'm shit at games in my old age.

Echo the Dishonoured shout.

To speak in broad terms, the strength of the PS4 is mostly in cinematic single player adventure games. If you haven't played any games since the Wii days, you will either be in for an enormous treat, or you simply may not find them fun.

GTAV is good, probably easy to get the hang of, and it might be fun to drive around causing mayhem taking turns with your partner.

The best game on the system are not necessarily simple fun but they shouldn't be too complicated to get into.

I'd recommend:

Horizon Zero Dawn - open world, robot dinosaurs, stick it on Easy and just explore, looks great, will get you up to speed with modern control methods without too much of a challenge. Probably pick it up for a tenner these days.

Streets of Rage 4 - You already know what this is, but if you like MD games then this newest edition is probably the best SoR. It's very easy to get into but lots of depth. Brilliant soundtrack.

The Last Of Us Remastered - This is arguably the peak of the cinematic single player adventure that the PlayStation is now known for. Some great characters and dialogue, a well told story and some pretty satisfying and brutal stealth combat. Again, it's cheap now and an excellent example of what modern AAA gaming is about. If you enjoy it, the sequel is also available on the PS4. It is pretty brutal but in a way that largely complements the story and world.

Skyrim Special Edition - Another game which is now cheap but legendary. It's an open world RPG which you could sink hundreds of hours into if you want, or just focus on the main quest and finish it in twenty. There's nothing like this on the PS2 or Wii. While it's now somewhat dated and a little simplistic for modern RPG fans, I think it is would be spot on for someone coming back into gaming. It's much more about quests, exploration and combat than fannying about with stats The soundtrack is one of the greatest ever, and the sense of vastness and adventure is still arguably unsurpassed for me.

I could recommend a whole lot more, but I suspect the barrier of entry is a bit high. Real talk, if you sold it and got a Switch, that would have a lot more simple and fun games to play with your partner, but the PS4 is a superb console with a massive library of 9/10 and 10/10 games.

I'll just list my favourites (available in the UK) for you to look up if you like:

Bloodborne
Dark Souls 1-3
Gran Turismo Sport
Red Dead Redemption 2
Titanfall 2
Metal Gear Solid V
Ghost of Tsushima
Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Battlefield V
Journey
What Remains Of Edith Finch?
Inside
The Witness
Street Fighter V
Until Dawn
Spider-Man & Miles Morales
Rez Infinite
Tetris Effect
Uncharted 4 & Lost Legacy (plus the remastered Uncharted Collection)
Wipeout Omega Collection
Persona 5 The Royal
Sekiro Shadows Die Twice
Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Star Wars Battlefront 1&2
Gravity Rush Remastered
The Last Guardian
The Witcher 3
Nier: Automata

Just look a few up and see what takes your fancy, I'd say. Look on YouTube for some gameplay footage. That's the best way to get an idea these days.

The brief seems to be fun, straightforward games you can stick on for an hour now and again so I'll say:

Rocket League
Fall Guys
Tony Hawk remaster
Doom 2016
Rayman Legends
Horizon Chase Turbo

Like the Opening Post chap, I also lost interest in games after San Andreas and didn't own another console until a few months ago. I'm 35. My partner bought a Switch and I got Skyrim for dead cheap in the sale. The self-improvement aspect is very addictive but it can also feel like a massive waste of time.

El Unicornio, mang

My Mum is 72 and got to grips with the Wii pretty easily (with my help) so it's a good option. Usually 50 quid with some games on ebay.
