but still. the Blitz was bad.
I don't think the Blitz was, on balance, very fun. Given the choice between "being in the Blitz" and "not being in the Blitz", I'd pick "no Blitz".

I think it's disturbing that it's frequently cited in Britain with a significance that belies how little the British people suffered overall compared to huge swathes of Europe and beyond, at the same time and in the same conflict (and as it happens, at times, at the hands of the British armed forces).

I think that reflects a gross misunderstanding of what 'bad' can really look like and did look like for hundreds of millions of people (including some who later settled in Britain), and how that might affect what they and their children fear and how they respond to that fear.

And in company of you calling the RAF terrorists, dude. In WW2, I'm on the side of the UK. You?

War criminals to be more precise, since it was state-sponsored terrorism.

if we really have to pick a side, I'd have to say the Soviet Union
To live in?

(In fairness, I've no idea what the risk of road traffic fatality was in the Soviet Union in the '40s.)

to hypothetically root for during ww2.

seriously, I understand your point about all these current references to the blitz being misguided. (in France I've heard some people comparing the lockdowns to the nazi occupation or vichy. it seems far less prevalent though, you won't see it in the cover of a newspaper)

Before or after they slaughtered thousands on Hitler's behalf?

For what it's worth I would be completely in favour of a full lockdown lasting the entirety of January with people only allowed out to shop and exercise, no meeting anyone outside your household, and a 10pm curfew, with obvious exemptions for single people and the most vulnerable.
They've really fucked this up. There are actual live "will affect a grade" exams in January. By leaving it all so late they have utterly fucked around with school kids (again).

Fambo Number Mive

My area is now the darkest purple, rolling rate 852.6.

They'll have to bring in another colour for the MSDA rate soon.

Looking at specimen dates there were 81,000 on 29th December

Is this ever going to stop before we're all dead?

Tier 12 will be the one that finally works.

Rate in my area is above 1,000 cases per 100,000, absolutely mad. Fuck Boris Johnson.

bgmnts

1 in 100 people getting covid does sound a bit mental.

I think I'd say it's darker than purple

Not long before deaths hit 83,000, which is a third of the way to the 250,000 predicted deaths that would happen before achieving herd immunity. Great progress!

The NYE data I saw at 4:30 this afternoon (first to see it in the UK!), would make your eyes pop out.

One in 50 people in England had Covid in the week ending 2 January, and that doesn't include people in hospitals and care homes.

I am feeling a bit left out now. No test, no covid, isolated since March pretty much. They should be reporting numbers who haven't had it and in 2023 give me the crown.

We're monitoring the situation. Possibly this week

So Johnson knew this 1 in 50 (or 30 in London) when he was talking to Marr?

And Keith probably knew when he was still demanding union members get back to fucking work.

She knew - but being a member of our media class decided not to mention it.

Should we stay in bed as well as at home? I'm sure you're as frustrated as the rest of us when everything is supposedly fine and safe and then FUCK ME YOU SHOULD SEE THE FIGURES when you and they have probably known about them for a few days to a week.
