Spectator dumping ground

The Spectator is only mentioned when it relates to another thread or when one of our favourite punching bags writes an article for them. But I thought we could have a thread for Spectator articles and headlines that are worthy of mocking without them being related to anything else.

I stumbled across this today:

Now, I have questions. Does Brendan think Orwell only wrote one book? Does he not know how to use quotation marks properly?

It's also really confusingly worded. Imagine not being familiar with that particular slang term. Considering the target audience this publication seems to have, half the readers are probably like "who the fuck is Stan Mitski?"

So there you have it. Here's the place to kick the shit out of some horrible journalism when you see it from one of our least favourite publications.

Fambo Number Mive

Haven't most people who are politically active read 1984 and Animal Farm? Unless he's talking about Keep The Aspidistra Flying.

I imagine a lot of these articles are so people can have their prejudices reinforced, just nod along and carry on voting Tory, because the headline makes no sense.

Is he talking about the singer-songwriter Mitski? If so, why is it likely that more people on the left will like her than have read Orwell? Why does it matter if this is the case?

I'm not sure that's real, is it dead-ced-dead?

I suspect most of Mitski's fanbase have read at least one Orwell book, since they're often on the school curriculum, and you're right, these articles are often written to draw false conclusions and reinforce prejudices. This has a real, "Eat avocado toast even once and you won't be able to buy a house" vibe to it.

Well, there you have it, folks, I've been had. I won't delete the thread though, i shall keep this up as a monument to my own gullibility.

Pingers

Is it called The Spectator because they enjoy sitting back and watching people fight over the scraps they've left them?

Ah, no, I thought it was real, just wanted to read the article before commenting and found it was not there but some shit about Fairytale of New York being censored was instead.  I was fooled too!  I think it's a fine idea for a thread too.

That's why I'm keeping the thread, and that's the sign of a good parody. It sounds like something that would be published on The Spectator.

I never realised so many right-wingers were Pogues fans.

Which reminds me of one of the most enjoyable tweets of 2020.  Never get's old.

And because it's traditional:

CHECK OUT THIS DUNCE[nb]I was fooled too[/nb]

buttgammon

I'm one of those social justice left types and not only have I read Nineteen Eighty-Four[nb]Therefore understanding how spurious most right-wing references to it are.[/nb], I also have no idea who Mitski is. Isn't it about time they got a new book to obsess over?

phantom_power

Is there some name for right wing dickheads invoking George Orwell to make out that the mildest criticism of outmoded ideas is JUST LIKE BIG BROTHER!, or that measures such as wearing masks and getting vaccinated is JUST LIKE BIG BROTHER! Apart from fuck-headed shit-thickery that is

I suppose Animal Farm is a critique of communism which to most of the right wing div brigade is interchangeablr with socialism. Just guessing.

dead-ced-dead

By the way, Mitski is a really good musician that "The kids" (TM) are into. I mean she's genuinely really good.

Junket Pumper

Says a lot about the Spectator and their audience that they titled this piece The Perils of Criticising Diane Abbott, even though she's only mentioned twice in the last paragraphs.

You'd rather "Stan Mitski" than read Orwell's book.

Ha Nick Cave shitting it that eventually a machine will make him obsolete too.

No better than a regular cunt on the production line.

Pink Gregory

Disappointed, but not surprised.

Yes, I think it's OK.  He's written some great songs but he's still allowed to be an arsehole.  Think of Bach - wrote, possibly, my favourite piece of music[nb]If such a thing as having a favourite is possible[/nb].  Did not bother to educate his daughters, left his poor wife[nb] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Magdalena_Bach [/nb], talented musician, mother of 13 of his children to die, penniless, in the street.  Arsehole.
