Trump Impeachment 2: Donald's hiding in the loo

QuoteThree Democrats - Congressmen Ted Lieu, David Cicilline and Jamie Raskin - are planning on introducing articles of impeachment against President Trump on Monday.

Articles of impeachment are charges brought against a president by the House of Rperesentatives. If the House votes to pass them, proceedings move to the Senate, which decides whether or not to convict.

CBS News, the BBC's US partner, reports that the bill has nearly 160 co-sponsors in the House. The three authors reportedly began drafting it while they were sheltering-in-place during Wednesday's riot.

According to a four-page draft posted by NBC News, the first charge against Trump is "incitement of insurrection".

"Donald John Trump engaged in high Crimes and Misdemeanors by willfully inciting violence against the Government of the United States," the draft reads.

The lawmakers accuse the president of making statements that encouraged and resulted in "imminent lawless action at the Capitol". The draft also says this was "consistent with his prior efforts to subvert and obstruct" the certification of President-elect Joe Biden's win.

"He thereby betrayed his trust as President, to the manifest injury of the people of the United States."...

The White House have called it "politically motivated" and highlighted Trump has 12 days left. I don't know whether Trump could be impeached in the next 12 days, given how long the last one took.

If he did get impeached, would that affect him running in 2024?

idunnosomename

impeached and convicted, yes. but it would also remove his post-presidential perks, like a bodyguard and all that

Fambo Number Mive

I suspect if that happened lots of MAGA people would volunteer to protect him. Would mean Trump having to stand near the general public though, I suspect he secretly loathes his supporters.

C_Larence

I believe if he was impeached then there would have to be a house vote on letting him run again for any public office again, so that would potentially effect his 2024 plans, although perhaps it is optimistic to assume that the democrats will be in control of the house by then.

Either way, Pelosi is making a big song and dance about this (there was a story earlier about making sure Trump couldn't nuke anyone), but last I saw the house won't be back in session until after the inauguration, and the senate has adjourned until the 19th.

Mmm - though technical defeat via a legal route will never resolve the circumstances that lead to right-wing populism,[nb]despite the visionless rhetoric of blue ticks and FBPE-ers, who seem to believe that simply impeaching an orange baddie or rejoining the EU will automatically transform society and take us back to the glory days of Obama and the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony.[/nb] impeachment would deny Trump some of his post-presidential benefits. (But, as you note by the addition of 'convicted', not all of them).

It would be gratifying to see Trump punished for his undeniable incitement, but we mustn't forget that boring old sod called History, who reminds us that Hitler was imprisoned after a failed coup in 1923. Didn't automatically quell his cause.

druss

I think it's good that this is happening just so that he will be the only president in history to be impeached twice.

No chance of it getting through the senate though, might get a few Republican senators on board but there won't be 17 of them, which is what is needed.

steve98

They don't have to try him immediately, in the Senate, they can wait a few months; which might make it more likely they'll vote to ditch the fucker

Fambo Number Mive

Impeachment and 25th Amendment meeting resolution both introduced.

QuoteA resolution to impeach Trump for his role in last week's violence was formally introduced by Democrats during the brief pro forma session that took place in the House of Representatives this morning.

The document accuses Trump of "incitement of insurrection," and claims that Trump actively encouraged violence at the US Capitol.

The article points to several false claims Trump made, including that the election was "stolen" from him and that he is the rightful winner of the 2020 vote...

the Democrats introduced a resolution moments ago calling on Vice-President Mike Pence to convene the White House cabinet to hold a meeting on whether to discharge Trump from office under the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution.

The brief pro forma session adjourned in less than 15 minutes after an objection to the resolution by a Republican lawmaker from West Virginia. It will reconvene tomorrow.

"politically motivated"

er

yes?

Hope someone actually stands up and says politics isn't separate from people's lives as we just saw from Trump's politically motivated attempt to delegitimise the election and start a riot.

DrGreggles

It'll be interesting to see how many Reps go along with it.
Quite a few of them see Trump as damaging the party, so will be more than happy to stick the knife it. Even some of the ones who'd previously backed him have turned, probably to save their owns skins further down the line, but they'll have seen what happened in Georgia.

idunnosomename

so what now are they trying to get through a 25th amendment ruling? the dems have majorities now though so can't they do it?

prosecute the silly old cunt's tits off

Won't the Republicans still control the Senate until the 20th with Pence still being Veep?

They'd need a super majority (two-thirds) of both the Senate and the House to amend the constitution - in particular to adjust the 25th to allow Congress rather than the Cabinet to make the call - so I wouldn't hold my breath.

Otherwise, they're relying on the VP and half the cabinet - which is even less likely.

Impeachment & conviction is the only likely course of action available

Couldn't Trump just order the pilots of Air Force One to fly round and round in circles for weeks on end until Biden agrees to let him keep the presidency? What could anybody do? Go up and get him?

While the letter is addressed to Trump it's also addressed implicitly to heads of defense.

I didn't realise that Trump had called Pelosi "crazy" and "a mess". Wow, it's such surprise that people don't like him, isn't it?

idunnosomename

sorry if im being a lazybones but why is it easier to get impeachment and conviction through?

QuotePoll: Nearly seventy-five percent of Republican voters say Trump is protecting Democracy

After the president incited militant supporters to breach the US Capitol building, leading to five deaths, and persistently tried to undermine the integrity of an election he lost, 73% of Republican voters who participated in the latest Quinnipiac poll still said that Donald Trump was protecting rather than undermining democracy.

In a poll of 1,239 self-identified registered voters, 70% of the Republicans also said that lawmakers. who voted to block electors were protecting rather than undermining democracy. Seventy-three percent of Republican voters said voter fraud was widespread, and 71% approved of Trump.

"When it comes to whether American democracy is under threat, both Republicans and Democrats see a raging five-alarm fire, but clearly disagree on who started it," said Tim Malloy, a Quinnipiac analyst.

Among all of those polled, including Democrats and Republicans, 56% said Trump was responsible for the storming, and 52 % said he should be removed from office.

Unsurprising, yet still appalling.

Presumably there is a crossover of people who think Trump was responsible for the storming and are happy about that and wish it had have gone a bit better.

Yeah, saw that in the Graun.  Effectively a third of the US electorate aren't just comfortable with fascism - they're happy with it.

It's going to take more than coast-based liberals calling them all cunts to stop them coming to power in the next decade or so.  Biden actually needs to restructure and invest - particularly in education - or the US falling into a fascist state is a real prospect.  I'd put money on the liberals just calling them all thick cunts and doing little of worth to fix the problem.

The 25th Amendment being used to remove a president is unlikely to pass - especially given how little time is left - because it can only be triggered by an agreement by the VP and half of the Cabinet to remove the sitting president.  The problem is that this VP is unlikely to want to do that - and Trump appoints the Cabinet, so you'd need half of Trump's sycophants to stick their neck on the line and publically declare him unfit for office.  Never going to happen.

There is the option to amend the constitution, and in particular the 25th, but that would take a fair bit of time to redraft and pass - and any amendment to the Constitution requires a supermajority in both houses of Congress to pass (and the Dems have narrow majorities in both - they'd need two-thirds of both houses to vote in favour).  Very unlikely to happen.

Impeachment & conviction is more likely - or at least, impeachment is.  Impeachment only requires a simple majority in the House of Reps to pass.  For this to end up in a conviction, you'd need a supermajority in the Senate. Given recent events, there's more likely to be a supermajority in the Senate than the House of Reps (there's fewer Trump loyalists in the Senate).  All Dems + 16 GOP Senators would be needed for a conviction.

Plus Air Force One doesn't have to be one specific plane, it's "a plane carrying the President" so even if Trump did try and stay in the plane they could remove the Air Force One designation after the Inauguration and give Biden some other plane, and call that one Air Force One.

oh ok cheers. at this point i thought even pence and his other loyalists might kick the cunt to the kerb, but then I suppose they're not too bothered about their political careers now since they wouldn't really have them anyway if it wasnt for Donald
