I suppose any song about drug addiction is a bit sad but Alice in Chains' The Real Thing is a bit grim but rocks at the same time.

I never used to have any time for Mark Ronson but I fucking love his Late Night Feelings album, which he made after a divorce and pitched as being full of sad bangers. Brings me to tears, parts of it.

I'd particularly recommend Pieces of Us and Don't Leave Me Lonely.

It's probably the Withnail & I associations, but Blue by Way Out West.

Sia - Chandelier and Broken Glass. The 1000 Forms Of Fear and This Is Acting albums are chock full of tragic bangers.
New Order - Round & Round. Sumner was going through a divorce during the recording of Technique, which bleeds through into some of his lyrics. He had previous form for bitter breakup songs though, such as Lonesome Tonight (the B-side to Thieves Like Us) or This Time Of Night and Sunrise from Low Life.

No, I'm not crying, I think I've just done a bad pill. Hold me.

Such a wonderful song. Written about the death of the main LCD guy's therapist apparently, which is about as "middle class musician" as you can get

I've heard this as well, but I can't remember where or when.

The first time I went to see them, I was practically dancing and blubbing at the same time when they played this, so it's the definition of a sad banger.

Do you mind? I'm putting my bra back on.

Yer maw's got sad bangers.

Teengirl Fantasy - Cheaters (Jon Talabot remix)

The vocal breakdown in the middle is the peak but the piano is unbelievable, as well. Just chips away at your defenses. End up crying and thumping fuck out of the world at the same time.

Gotta be Drip Dry Eyes by Yukihiro Takahashi

Realised I'd been accidentally tailing him for a solid mile on the way to a Haruomi Hosono show a couple years ago. Full white suit!

Perhaps more wistful than sad but it's a banger in my eyes, Jori Hulkkonen - Back When We Was Attached

Gonk

Most of the tracks are sad bangers tbh, an excellent record. Swamp Dogg produced it.

shagatha crustie

Great thread. Me and my mate have a playlist for this very thing.

Love Someone - Night Giants

In Love With You - The Paradise (could be interpreted as euphoric but there's something wistful and melancholy about it to me)

Hold Tight - Jamie xx

Seedsy

Does poison by the prodigy count?
Is that more of a "slow banger"

Norton Canes

We're gonna need some Austra. Raunchy vid warning

The Beat and the Pulse

Barbara Gaskin and Dave Stewart - It's My Party (and I'll cry if I want to)

Tove Lo - Habits (Stay High) - posting the popular remix as it sounds sadder, to me anyway. It's quite a melancholic (if catchy) song as it is, but the lyrics are pretty bleak. (Although tbf at the moment the video just makes me wish I was doing all that stuff.)

French/French language pop seems to do sad bangers pretty well.

Alizée - Moi... Lolita

Madame Monsieur - Mercy

Stromae - Papaoutai

Seeing the trailers for It's A Sin has reminded me of an obvious choice - Years & Years - King

Another obvious one maybe - it was completely overshadowed by all the PHWOAARR stuff at the time but I still think t.A.T.u. - All The Things She Said is a bit of a legit sad banger.

I've liked Sohodolls for ages, but one of the singles from their only album (which came out 13 years ago) seems to be really popular all of a sudden. Not sure why, maybe it's become a TikTok... thing? Anyway, sad banger potential here - Sohodolls - Bang Bang Bang Bang

Dusty Substance

Bumping this thread having been reminded of it after listening to "What Is Love" by Haddaway the other day.

It's a song I once hated, as it was released just as I was getting into "proper" music (that awful era some of us go through where guitar music is the only music that matters) but in the last ten years or so, I've grown to appreciate it as a banging pop song. There's a real sense of melancholy to it, the way Hadds sings "Baby don't hurt me, no more" makes him sound so vulnerable and wounded.
