Indeed, but I'm no jameater from Wukkie - born and raised in Whitehaven (escaped 21 years ago).

Never been to Hawick, but the name always reminds me of hearing the rugby scores on Border Lookaround.
Ha, yeah, I think Lookaround is where I heard most about West Cumbria too! I've never really been there either.

I remember they wouldn't stock Private Eye at one time ,but I can't remember why.The Eye called them W H Smug and I would agree with that.

I remember Smiths ending their sale of top-shelf jazz mags after protesters chained themselves to the shelves. Smiths then started selling prawn sandwiches "instead" as a PR campaign. Something about "prawn for porn." Does anyone else remember this strangeness? I've looked for it online before to no avail.

Between 1984 and 1988 my Dad worked in Newcastle Upon Tyne, so for most of my holidays the family went up there to see Newcastle, Whitley Bay and various other places nearby.

Returning to school, we were always asked to write down what we had done during our holidays.  And every single time, I would communicate that I had gone to ELDON SQUARE where the whole family had visited JOHN MENZIES, WHSMITH

I bought loads from that Eldon Square branch of WHS before it moved.

I remember deliberating over buying Velveteen or Stop on cassette - struggling to decide if I fancied Sam Brown* or Wendy James more.

*Sam Brown won, and I stand by that decision.

I Remember the Women's Society from the Uni regularly turning up at the branch in town, raking the top shelf and dumping all the grot on the floor.

Made it a lot less embarrassing for me to get my copies I can tell you.

the fact there's not even an attempt at green dates it so much more than anything else

Were green baubles hard to make in the 60s and 70s?  Or just against the grain of Christmas fashion?  "Green baubles on a green tree?  What a waste!"

Glass baubles are transparent glass with mirror plating on the inside to make them reflective. Sometimes they were made from coloured glass (and green glass is pretty common, being the standard for wine and beer bottles) but most of the time they were blown from plain glass that was dipped in a transparent lacquer to give them their colour. I think the reason you rarely saw them was just 'why put green ornaments on a green tree?'.

yeah, it's probably just "why green baubles?" and fashions in the end

always seemed that Green got left out or kept to just special situations. like snooker or Scottish football. used to get left out of the default big box of lego lineup too - Black, Blue, Red, Yellow and White all there of course, Grey utility player unusual bits maybe, then just a green slab for the floor/shuriken style junior bullying.

and that makes me think of lighting and old film stock and video tapes, and Star Trek having yellow gear by mistake, and how greens always looked weird on old telly and film. like good middle range Greens. solid greens. everything seemed to look either spring onion crisps or practically black car finish as well.

maybe a combination of manufacturing the colouring that was trickier and/or more expensive for a bit, so we all just defaulted to doing without for ages
