Also; that story shouldn't have been posted Retinend, can you still edit it? Barry's made it very clear he doesn't want old members brought up in such an explicit way, it's even on the front page of the forums. And tbh, I think it's a mean spirited thing to post anyway.

Retinend's intention I think was to remind us that usually when you plumb below the surface of perilously bitter internet characters, what you find is an incredible amount of unprocessed pain.  No excuses or anything; it just seems to be a fact.  I'm a bit of an emotional sponge to say the least, and I feel blasts of sadness around such types all the time.

Now come on people, you can't just talk about CaB bad guys - you need to mention the goodies.

Maybe, but Barry's asked all ex-posters and explicitly that ex-poster to be left in the past. There was no need to mention the poster's name. And considering who that poster was, probably none of it should have been brought up again.

How long ago was it that Andrew Collins popped up on here and almost immediately received a savage and undeserved kicking from a bunch of members? I can't find the thread now, annoyingly, but that's my last memory of genuinely objectionable behaviour by a majority on here (as opposed to Milverton-type solo troll losers). Andrew Collins, FFS, has there ever been a more placid and unobjectionable target?

Well, Josie Long, I suppose.

Agree with Kelvin on the old user anecdote. Unnecessarily long and detailed even if old posters weren't verboten on here.

For placid and unobjectionable, read dull and unfunny. But I presume this thread is getting canned as soon as Barry sees it, so none of this will matter.

Mister Six

Dull and unfunny doesn't deserve a massive pile on from everyone here (or anyone anywhere) though.

I'm a horrible person, because I laughed.
Agree. If you're any kind of public figure, some people will always talk shit about you. Doing it on an internet forum that you don't run and aren't affiliated with is talking behind your back. You can just not go there and write the members off as saddos and losers. People replying to your tweets (or commenting on your blog or a forum that you run) is like them screaming "YOU'RE SHIT!" through the window.

I can't remember the whole thread and I don't intend on re-reading it, but people were wishing death on her. That's disturbing for anyone to read about themselves, never mind a young woman in a male-dominated industry that's full of predators. The thread is indefensible.

Go find the thread, and I bet your massive pile on is 5 people, or fewer.

I liked old CAB.

I like new CAB.

I don't think Josie Long is funny. But you can :)

For a bit of balance, while a lot of the posters getting their reputations dragged through the mud were miserable, pompous, patronising gits, that was also a time when comedy discussion on this board was actually passionate, in depth, insightful and interested in the mechanics of comedy, rather than just a bunch of "Funniest Comedy Dogs" threads, and threads of people going "I thought this show was quite good, yeah".

never seen those. do you have a link?

I'm glad I joined the forum recently.

To be fair, the forum has been nothing like the linked threads since I joined in 2014.

Admittedly, this is because my brilliant first post changed the forum significantly.

I'm not defending it. I'm speaking in general terms about the difference between shite talking about someone on a forum where they aren't a member or involved with it in any way and leaving nasty comments on someone's social media where they're guaranteed to see it.

What nonsense are you on about.

It kind of reads like you're saying "Cuh the most oppressed class today is straight white men!!!" And as if that makes shit said about women fine actually.

Pretty much, although I'll probably be crucified for such arrogance.  And lies.

Nope, the discussion is about C&B and  what Josie Long said, hence the quote talking about hostility, which in the case of this forum is primarily towards that group.

It sounds to me like in 2004 a lot of the people posting here either were actually in the beginnings of a career in comedy, or had the makings of doing so but through fear, lack of self-worth, inability to deal with rejection, or whatever, never even took the first step.  Someone like Josie Long would have infuriated the latter, because she really emanated the aura of a member of the audience getting up and stepping on stage at that point in her career, a nervous relatability, and nothing riles people up where it really hurts like the notion that someone's doing something you could be doing but aren't.  2021 CaB has a much, much higher comedy fans-to-comedy creators ratio, so that element of the discourse has largely been done away with.

She is a proper socialist and not just a fake lefty that many exposed themselves to be in that time.

Abso-fucking-lutely. I honestly can't be fucked with Stew Lee, Brooker or Iannucci after they showed themselves up during the Corbyn era.

It's not unlikely though that a comedian is going to read threads on a comedy forum, is it? It's not as if someone posted a screed about a random stranger who's annoyed them in the pub and had the bad luck that it's someone from here.

Yes, because when you're getting a torrent of abuse it's clearly important to check whether the barrage of abuse is 20 people abusing you once each or a few people repeatedly abusing you, which doesn't sound a lot like me really.

Literally anyone can get up on stage at an open mic night. Although the idea that the serial abusers were in part jealous failed comics themselves probably has something to it.

Why? Why does he (or any other public figure) get to escape criticism merely by posting on here?

Mister Six is the one who said "massive pile on", and I don't think what actually happened (again, please find the thread if you disagree with me) is that, or anything close to it.
