Crack: Cocaine, Corruption and Conspiracy (Netflix documentary)

This has just appeared on Netflix UK. A fascinating look at the rise of crack, why people became crack users and crack dealers.

The film interviews those directly involved in the crack trade - former users and dealers - and others who lived in communities with high crack use.

It looks at the racism inherent in the War On Drugs, such as the disparity between cocaine and crack sentences.

The documentary is a massive indictment of Reagan and Reaganomics. "Just Say No" might seem to make sense to wealthy out-of-touch people like the Reagans, but if the government had actually wanted to stop crack they would have looked at reasons why people were taking crack in the first place.

Meanwhile Reagan's government was happy for cocaine smuggling to take place if it indirectly helped defeat Communists. Reagan would have sanctioned anything to help defeat Communists, no matter how bad it was for America and the rest of the world. Reagan also sold arms to Iran, which today's conservatives tend to ignore.

Absolutely. Just saw this and it was infuriating how much Regan, Bush Snr and Clinton missed the point and spent trillions making everything fucking worse. Great documentary that I wasn't actually expecting much from.

Really enjoyed this - it's shamefully not something I know a lot about and it was pretty eye-opening.
