Is Godzilla a God whose name is Zilla, you shouldn't be able to put God before your name if not.

Zurprise Zurprise!!!!

Watching King of the Monsters in 4K on an OLED telly and by fuck am I bored. It's crushingly pedestrian and by-numbers bombastic. Absolutely shit. The monster bits are decent but good fuck, it doesn't half take itself very very seriously, despite having absolutely fuck all to say.

I also can't bear Vera Farmiga's downturned mouth and frown, such a miserable looking bastard, suits this po-faced stick of shit well enough, to be honest. Zhang Zi Yi is completely wasted. Millie Bobby Brown or whatever is quite decent, very charismatic kid, just got nothing to work with.

Why is Hollywood so shit

Now watching Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack and after five minutes it's instantly better in every way.

I like how direct the naming is, as well. Probably the most "evil" Godzilla has been as well.

Cheers, I should have it by tomorrow. From what little I've read about it in the last 5 minutes, it seems to have gone back to the allegorical roots, albeit updated. Hopes raised...

Pretty much.

While the Heisei and Millennium Godzilla series still treat the very first one from 1954 as canon (Subsequent movies featuring a second Godzilla), Shin essentially is presented as the first time the world has seen Godzilla, and is about how they deal with him. Lots of politics and stuff. The atomic breath scene is presented as a proper "Holy Shit" moment. Hideaki Anno made him scary again.

Speaking of Anno, he's gone and done an Ultraman movie, due out this year. Posted this trailer in my Tokusatsu thread, but I'll dump it here, too:

Any a youse seen the one where Kong has a heart transplant and after scenes of exertion has to lean against a wall clutching his chest?

Real, I swear it.

King Kong Lives, the 1986 sequel to the Jeff Bridges remake. Yes, and it's dreadful. Kong gets a mechanical heart, meets a lady Kong, has a son runs around with a train set and then has a heart attack. It's like a Mike Leigh film, if Timothy Spall played a 120-foot gorilla.

I realise that it's a bit churlish of me to correct Hollywood's mistakes, but here you are:

Godzilla vs Gorilla

Fixed your quite exceedingly stupid title for you there Hollywood, where 'Godzilla' didn't even remotely rhyme with 'Kong' like you obviously thought.

You're welcome!!!

I've only seen Godzilla (2014) and Kong: Skull Island (2017). The former was sort of admirable in its decision to remain understated and patient - recalling the restraint of films like Silence of the Lambs and Jurassic Park, which feature only about 15 minutes of their respective monsters - but overplayed this to the point of cutting away whenever Godzilla threatened to appear or do anything interesting. Can't remember if the human characters were any good. Great skydiving scene. Very nice Godzilla design.

Skull Island was nothingy, an obvious DC-style functional stepping stone toward FRANCHISE CROSSOVER EVENT. Anyone trying to depict Kong now must compete with the spectre of Peter Jackson, whose own version of the big gorilly was so memorable and expressive, forging an instant emotional connection with the audience. 2017's Kong was an inferior blokey ape I didn't give a shit about.

The colour grading in the King of Monsters trailer makes me feel nauseous, and the runtime combined with poor critical scores means I might never bother with it. But after this year, I'd love to go to the cinema for any reason so I might end up seeing Handsome Godzilla getting twatted by Boring Kong on the big screen, even if it's expensive and rubbish and I desperately need a wee half-an-hour before the end.

I've come to the conclusion that Godzilla must be Hollywood code for ritualistic cocaine and sex parties because they certainly don't get together because they're interested in making a movie. The Anne Hathaway movie Colossal (discussed on a current thread somewhere) is a better monster movie than Godzilla: Broderick As Fuck or Godzilla: Now It's Cranston. It didn't help that the 2014 version came out the same time as Pacific Rim, which is actually a film made by someone who's interested in giant monsters and how they can be combatted. You get the impression that even if a giant dinosaur lizard monster was terrorising the USA, nobody involved in the American Godzilla movies would bother to look out their window.

Kodzilla and Gong?  Yes they do.  They get together because they want to make a movie like in the olden days.

Yeah, and Gong.  Do you have a photo of a gong to show you know what one is?

See also: Why Pacific Rim: Uprising was shit in comparison. You could tell the people behind that one didn't have the same love for kaiju and mecha that Guillermo Del Toro did. It tried to be bigger, but failed to be better. The love for this stuff wasn't there.

remember how in the uk the ninja turtles became renamed 'hero' turtles?  and the action figures were all redesigned so that the turtles would be holding capes and medicine and special xray vision goggles and stuff?

ok good you remember that, well did you also know that godzilla here in the uk was briefly renamed 'gosh'zilla for exactly the same reason?  and the toys were of him going 'oh blimey!'

"oh blimey!" (c) 'gosh'zilla, 1988

Does anyone know whether Kong will force a tree down Godzilla's throat?

It turns out that someone already made a crossover with The King of Monsters and Kong: https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0923752/

Nice cam footage, how did you get tickets to the premier?

punched the air

and, accidentally, the bloke who owned the tickets.  And then I ran off with them, quite by mistake.

This is out now. I'm only 5 mins in but I'm astonished at how poor the graphics are. Kong somehow looks worse than the 2005 version. They've also tried to do that Marvel "quirky-opening-with-nostalgic-song" thing, and it's shite. How are WB/Legendary so bad at this?

Should probably watch the whole thing before passing any more judgment, but I was shocked at how bad it looks. PS3 quality.

EDIT: oh my, this is TERRIBLE.

Goldentony

I got a bootleg of a similar looking one of those Godzilla figures posted there a few year ago for 30 euros in Berlin behind a train station, the guy spoke to me for about 5 minutes straight in German about it, laughed along and stuff, then just went COST? deal done, its wearing some beads and stuff I got conned into donating toward on the shelf here

Got very confused by this thread for a second, then realised y'all meant monke vs lizar

Alberon

Just watched this and it is utter nonsense from start to finish as it absolutely should be. Any scenes with actual humans in was boring as fuck but the main fight sequences weren't bad.

And, spoilers just in case anyone cares,
Spoiler alert
Kong finds a magic axe at the centre of the world, but Godzilla still beats him, but then Mechagodzilla turns up and beats Godzilla. Kong is dying, but some humans restart his heart by rerouting all the electricity from a antigrav plane into him. Then Kong saves Godzilla and chops Mechagodzilla into pieces.

watching this later with my 8 year old
he gets a bowl of popcorn
I get a bottle of wine
looking forward to utter nonsense

Thought this was cracking braindead fun. I hadn't seen the anticipatory films and thought it was cute that they expected me to give two fucks about the people. The girl on the Godzilla side especially really needed stamping on by a thousand-ft monster. That said,
Spoiler alert
I was laughing and having a great time by the first battle, at sea. Really enjoyed that and it got more and more stupid as it went. Lovely.
