Scottish Politics: Douglas Ross' Magic Roundabout

The Alba lot appear to be at the STV building at Pacific Quay protesting the fact they're not getting on the debate, despite that being not where the debate is taking place.

Good sign mate. Forgot how long the word "water" is?

Bloody terfs

Twitter consensus on that debate seems pretty similar to the last one. Sturgeon: ok, but seems weary with the whole thing; Sarwar: trying the wuv woo consensual approach, but nobody cares; Ross: hahahaha fuck; Rennie: trying to out-shouty Ross, bless him; Harvie: very good, just as Lorna Slater was in the first one.

Long-ish read this, but it's useful to understand why Douglas Ross is not just generally a cunt, but the specifics of his absolute cuntishness https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/opendemocracyuk/douglas-ross-and-the-war-on-scotlands-travellers/

Something I didn't appreciate is just how shit the turnout has been for Scottish Parliament elections. In 2016 after the referendum and Tory majority in the UK elections, it was 55.6%, which was the highest since the first election in 1999.

I saw on Twitter that 23.8% of voters have registered for a postal vote this time, a modest rise from 17.7% in 2016. Despite printing the form, I didn't bother because I realised I'd have to queue to buy a stamp to send it in, sigh. But turnout could be even lower this time round. Possibly good for the Alba cunts but almost certainly bad for Scotland.

Having just seen a clip where Ross squirms as he's asked why he hates travellers on novara, the fucking state of the studio they're doing the debate in one could be forgiven for thinking it's plausible.

Having seen the studio facilities in PQ, there's no way they'd have held it there.

stonkers

Yes to avoid the protestors they cunningly moved it to SWG3, which is about a 15 minute leisurely walk from Pacific Quay

canadagoose

Postal votes have now been sent out in a lot of places. Still both votes Green for me this time.

Sebastian Cobb

Yeah mine arrived today. Green are only on the region ticket for me.

greencalx

Was gonna say I thought the greens only stood on the list?

Got a Johnson leaflet today. "A vote for Daniel is a vote" it says. Well, I suppose it technically qualifies.

Sturgeon interview on C4 news tonight was interesting. Subtle, though explicit, step away from the Growth Commission, calling it out of date in the post-covid world. Long needed economic shift from the Salmond era.

canadagoose

Yeah, Sebastian / greencalx, they're only standing in a few constituencies, mostly where their support is concentrated. Interestingly they're also standing in Ettrick, Roxburgh & Berwickshire, which is an odd decision but there you go. The Tories are a shoo-in there anyway so pff.

I imagine Daniel Johnson is Labour's best chance at a constituency seat? I think Jackie Baillie's goose is cooked this time.

I didn't see that, but I'll have to give it a watch.

So if the Growth Commission is out of date, that means another referendum with no economic plans? Even if growth is no longer the overriding goal, an Independent Scotland would still have priorities such as a Green New Deal and infrastructure program which will require spending significant amounts of money and it would be nice to know how that would work.

Meanwhile, got an SNP leaflet through my door that doesn't mention independence at all, but then I am in Edinburgh.

Sebastian Cobb

Well it sounds like they're trying to make socially-progressive promises outside of independence, what with the recent announcements surrounding 4 day weeks, bikes for kids and broadband I think.

Some Scottish Labour types reacted to these as if it's cheating to offer popular policy.

I think the UBI stuff seems to have been costed: https://www.thersa.org/reports/basic-income-scotland

Why does it mean that?

The Growth Commission was just the wet dream of a bunch of neoliberal corporate lobbyists. It was never a viable plan.

Is the SLab reaction not borne of the frustration that the SNP will successfully spin the free stuff while presiding over cuts and broken promises elsewhere? I know George Foulkes said that thing once but it's legitimate to question manifesto commitments when they're often barely worth the paper they're written on. How's our not-for-profit national energy company getting on, attainment gap, abolishing council tax, etc.

It's legitimate to question such things and I don't trust the SNP all that much.

The thing that gets lost in the ridiculousness of Foulkes' point is that even if the SNP are merely cyncially making sure things run marginally better than they do down south, which they probably are a bit, that's still more than Labour can currently be trusted to offer. To me Labour seem to be arguing from a position of "everything's bad but change is worse".

Was going to stomp in here with FACTS and tell you she lost her constituency seat in 2016, but it turns out she held on to it by 100 votes. I can only presume she's a half decent MSP locally, because she's otherwise a totemic example of the worst of SLAB.

Sebastian Cobb

The Scottish Tories have managed to mention The SNP (81 times), more than it mentions itself (66 times) in their 60-page manifesto.

Anyone else picked up on Paul Sweeney's "I am an extremely clever man" routine on Twitter, only to consistently have his arse handed to him? His latest muse is that the TUSC are right wing https://twitter.com/PaulJSweeney/status/1384103933623242759?s=20

Yes, I picked up on that, by which I mean I took the piss out of him on my own account. I can't stand the man. That arrogance.

Blinder Data

What's so objectionable about Sweeney? That tweet was poorly worded but he is a millennial, had to apply for universal credit recently. I don't see the arrogance.

I think he's one of the more interesting Labour candidates. Obviously he's wrong to say TUSC are "obectively right wing" but then that TUSC bloke said Scottish Labour is to the right of the SNP, which is one of those trite sayings that doesn't bear scrutiny. The party of Fergus Ewing is socialist, yup.

Reposting this because it's great. Tag yourself! I'm definitely on there

In the main for a series of contortionist, gish-galloping case for the union type tweets. That sucks he's had to apply for UC though.

No idea, though I'd definitely be shy with speaking at meetings. Definitely know a few indy dad types though (and equivalent indy mums), in the main from the local SNP group, who got a tad ranty at the mere suggestion the whole Alba thing might be a bit shit.
