This is so shitty (not you guys, the situation) - there is anti-Semitism on the left, just like there's racism and homophobia and transphobia and sexism on the left. Yet because the right-wing press and a faction within the Labour party itself weaponised actual anti-Semitism to attack and dethrone Jeremy Corbyn, people on the left are going to dismiss books like this out of hand.

Why criticise 'just' the left?

Is AS any more prevalent there than in normal society (maybe? I dunno) or is it more prevalent in the right (fuck yeah, Johnson himself has criticised Jews running the media and chummed up with Viktor Orban, a known Anti Semite).

Isn't it kinda wiser to start holding those actually in power to account?

Why this vendetta against the left?

After all they were rounded up in the concentration camps first.

"First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me"

The left were victims first.

Is Baddiel, someone who has been caught 'punching down' racially on more than one occasion, kinda denying the first 9 lines of that famous poem about the Holocaust and only concentrating on 'his own' because that's all that matters to him?

frajer

Yeah he's clearly just jumping on the bandwagon of the right's new favourite slogan "so much for the tolerant left."

His racist article from 1999 confirms everything about this punch-down chancer. "I'm right-wing so I'm allowed to be a complete embarrassing shambling cunt of a human being with a wet brain. But the so-called tolerant left need to be held to a higher standard."

Bad Ambassador

He's in the new season of Celebrity Bake Off, so we'll all get to enjoy seeing him baking himself into a pastry or similarly avoidable mishap.

phantom_power

Is there a bigger gap between someone's idea of their own intelligence, and how much they go on about it, and how that intelligence presents itself than Baddiel's?

'So David, this pineapple cake is interesting...'

frajer

"David stop touching the fucking hob I know it makes pretty colours but it will never not burn your fingers. DAVID."

because it's on my head?

*looks straight down camera, shrugs, and expects everyone to applaud, because he is David Baddiel*

holyzombiejesus

How many pages in before he sneers "kinder gentler politics"?

Well, it is written by David Baddiel. If someone with a less biased MO wrote a balanced work I think it would be taken seriously. No one on the left with any self awareness denies racism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, exist on the left. They're all bigger issues than AS on the left, and AS is a bigger issue in wider society than it is on the left, but we still know it exists.

If he has only interviewed people who agree with him for this book, each exchange will be a pointless. Two people punching a straw man.

Have you seen any of his other work?

Maybe he'll make a pie out of a tshirt encrusted with saliva and cum.

"Churchill beat Hitler therefore criticising Churchill is antisemitic"

if the "progressive left" control "cancel culture" why is this egomaniac racist still pumping out kids' books and getting on light-entertainment baking programmes?

Sebastian Cobb

Seriously though why is anyone talking about him like his opinion on anything has any merit?

Famous Mortimer

This might be the dumbest thing he's ever written (and there's some serious competition).

Racism is bad, but the racism I suffer from is worse, and if you mention any other sort of racism make sure you say how mine is at the top. *chef's kiss*

Churchill's different because he was mythologised as a Zionist sympathiser.

jobotic

So it's correct to highlight the not talked about suffering of PoC but doing so shows unconscious antisemitism? Have I got that right?

Sebastian Cobb

Not sure a man who blacks up and defends nazi pug guy is the best arbiter of antisemitism.

JaDanketies

Dankula definitely appears to be a massive rightwing shithead but I don't understand how any sensible person can defend his prosecution for the nazi pug video.

Sebastian Cobb

It was more he seemed to be 'this isn't offensive at all, it's fine', which seems in direct contrast to his getting worked up about a mispronunciation of a nonces name.

Same sort of thing happened with that right wing young Labour woman who got found to be asking 'who's the hottest nazi'. Almost as if his gauge for what's antisemitic is linked to people's political leanings somehow.

Why is anti-semitism on the left not as big an issue as racism, transphobia , homophobia and sexism? Is it because there are less antisemitic  people than racists on the left, for example?

Apologies if I've misunderstood  your post.

Sebastian Cobb

I'd say antisemitism was made a bigger issue than transphobia, racism or sexism (how many Labour transphobes have got into trouble?), even if its incidence is definitely less than general racism.

Said it before, but I cannot imagine the sort of person who would willingly go to see that show. Proper "Old man yells at cloud" stuff.

Jockice

"Jews Don't Count is a book for people who consider themselves on the right side of history. People fighting the good fight against homophobia, disablism, transphobia and, particularly, racism. People, possibly, like you."

Fight against disabilism?  Forgive me if I'm wrong but I didn't see Baddiel And The Blue Ticks making a big fuss about this sort of stuff. https://www.disabilityrightsuk.org/news/2019/may/uk-violating-its-human-rights-obligations-finds-un-poverty-expert

In fact as Francesca Martinez pointed out on the same Question Time, Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell were the only two politicians who would regularly offer their support for disabled people's campaigns. People actually dying because of government policies didn't seem to matter though. Not when the former once made a comment about a mural and pronounced a sex offender's name wrong. That was much more important.

If Jews don't count, why are they portrayed as being good with money?

The gleeful celebratory reaction to Dankula's prosecution  was a real turning point for me. That's when I first became aware of the  hypocrisy, lack of consistency and all round cunty attitude of those I have long agreed with.
