Yeah, could have been. Or maybe he had been and chose to ignore it. I've been in that situation myself when I'm trying to interview someone on a particular subject and the person concerned just wants to talk about their pet subject. All part of the fun of journalism. I'm glad I don't have to do it for a living anymore. I wasn't really taking sides there. I didn't particularly like the woman who did the interview incidentally. And she knew literally nothing about music so I can imagine it being excruciating on both sides.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply I thought you were! I was just adding that in as another reason it might have been a BAD THING for all concerned.

Just saw this and had to draw people's attention to this bizarre moment with the late Florian Schneider of Kraftwerk fame. Kraftwerk were never keen on interviews, Florian in particular, and I can only imagine that malaise being compounded by the interviewer bending down to stick the mic in your face, and then speaking Brazilian to the camera after every fucking question.

Also : "What. Do. You. Think. Of. Massive. Attack?"

My fucking arsehole. Florian's responses are great though...

I remember hearing the endearing but frankly dreadful Gary Crowley interviewing Ralf Hütter on the radio when Tour De France Soundtracks came out. I had to turn it off after about 5 minutes. He got the name of their first three albums wrong, which is quite something considering two of them are called "Kraftwerk". And he asked Ralf what "Vitamin" from the new album (lyrics - a list of vitamins, supplements and minerals) was about, and got the extremely terse reply, "it's about nutrition". At least he wasn't being interviewed by Jools Holland, I suppose.

I recently watched Autoluminescent, a film about Rowland S Howard. There were some good bits, and I find the whole Boys Next Door / Birthday Party / Bad Seeds / Crime mythology completely fascinating, but bloody hell there are some inane sections, and Rowland could express himself through his playing twenty times better than he could in conversation.

homesickalien

I haven't heard them but Marc Riley has mentioned many times his interviews with Ray Davies and Jonathan Richman were very awkward.

Anyone have a link?

I'm a die hard Rowland fan-thing and find it endearing when I see him being interviewed in that but he did speak incredibly slowly. His interview segments in the documentary We're Living On Dog Food about the Melbourne post-punk scene are similarly torturous but it's made even funnier by the fast cut editing of the rest of it, a series of talking heads with him in the middle talking...as...slowwwlllyy...as....POSS-ible. A discussion on the influence of Iggy Pop on the scene is brought to a screeching halt by Rowland saying very slowly "Iggy Pop was insane". I find this clip of him talking about Bryan Ferry quite moving: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AwF_hSkqwg

Anyway speaking of RSH I'd come back to the thread to post Billy Corgan attempting to interview Nick Cave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X1LThFfA8U . I never thought I'd feel bad for Billy Corgan and on second thought I still don't.

I think they did the best they could, she's dealing with the driest wit in all music via a serious language barrier, outdoor noise, it's hardly the time to start asking about oscillators and Stockhausen?

As a counter to the thread here is this interview/review show with John Lydon:

He is fun and quite charmingly curmudgeonly and forthright rather than the boring contrary twat he has become

Glebe

RE: Gary Crowley, here's an old CaB chestnut:

Devo Fun Factory Appearance UKTV June 1980.

The barrow boy banter is excruciating, though he was only a lad to be fair. Used to stay up to watch the The Beat which he hosted and which went out at all hours of the morning but had some interesting bands on.

Kinda feel Crowley may have partly inspired Simon Day here:

Fast Show - Indie Club.

A fantastically pointless interview with the Beastie Boys on The Word at 18:45 (sorry, I've forgotten how to do the timestamp thing):

The Word was a goldmine for awful, car-crash interviews. This one with Faith No More still makes me laugh and cringe:

Oh god I did forget. I still use the phrase "Would you say that to Tom Petty?" wherever I can. That poor band of dull hipsters, imagine what that band room was like every night.

You can do an entire thread of MES interviews...

This one's all in the body language - Riley had punched MES the night before (hence the black eye) and wasn't to stay on the band much longer.

The guy's a asshole.

Jo Whiley though. Vacuous. 'How do you feel about winning the award?' Is that the best you can do?

holyzombiejesus

It's the NME Awards not the Nobel Prize. Perfectly acceptable question which I'm sure loads of other artists weren't cunts about answering. Don't know why MES keeps getting a free pass when he's consistently a cunt.

idunnosomename

I like how he just insults the NME and then walks off leaving the statue

Hasn't been for about the last three years, to be fair.

# a cunt...a cunt you don't find every day#
( I just think it would be nice if we could all sing about top dead Indie Music Icon Mark E. Smith being/ having been a cunt to the tune of " You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" by The Righteous Brothers)

Gregory Torso

Agree.

Now he's gone, gone, gone.

Jockice

I can't find it after a quick look on youtube but I remember in the Arctic Monkeys' early days Jamie Cook answering a TV interviewer's question about how they were feeling (I think they'd won some award and it was a press conference) with a load of smartarse invective along the lines of 'how do you think I feel? Shit?"

He probably thought he was really sticking it to the man (even though from my recollection it was a female who asked the question) but I just thought it was pathetic and childish, even for someone of his tender years. I've never interviewed them but he'd have had a firm: "Fuck off wanker,'' from me if he'd tried that sort of stuff.

With the piano accompaniment of Colin Sell.

Are there any examples of music journalists telling stroppy interview subjects to go fuck themselves?
