I heard what I'm pretty sure was a Mos Def track the other day, probably on the radio, with a sample that I recognise, might be a remix or him featuring on someone else's tune. But somehow I can't find it on any of his records or wherever I look. It stuck out since you don't hear much from him lately, doesn't really fit with the production on most of his albums.

It has a sample that keeps repeating that sounds a little sci-fi/horror, has a screechy quality to it, and it's very recognisable, might have been used on another famous hip hop track. It really shouldn't be that hard to find but it's driving me mental. The track might have had a number in the title, like 4th something or similar. I want to let it go and get some work done but I keep coming back and hunting for it.

Can anyone help?

It could be auditorium? Slick rick is featured on that.

I Against I by Massive Attack featuring Mos Def?

Or Two Words by Kanye West?

Thought that too...used on a Blade film if i'm correct.

Malcy

Could try here and see if there's any Sci-Fi/Horror samples used.

https://www.whosampled.com/Mos-Def/

I can't think what it is.

thugler

Tried all the suggestions so far, nothing close really. I'm starting to think it must not have been Mos Def since I've tried basically everything he's been on, it could be some obscure edit with of one of his verses dropped into something maybe. One of those mandela effect things maybe. I even tried some rappers who sound similarish, Q Tip etc.

I think it was on 6 music, I've checked their playlists and stuff. It's not even anything amazing it's just annoying me.

Goldentony

is it definitely Mos Def and not someone like Kool Keith? Not a massive Mos Def expert but KK does this sort of thing a lot. Cant imagine it was this track but something like this - https://youtu.be/N_McYwa8KBk

phantom_power

If it is sci-fi it could be Deltron 3030 or Handsome Boy Modelling School

thugler

Yeah i love kool keith so think i would have clocked if it was him. The sample is a little along those lines but not so obviously sci fi, it's so recognizable I'm pretty sure it's a classic beat. I'll probably never get it. Thanks for the help anyways.

I've since searched a twitter account that tweets every track played on 6 music, so it couldn't have been mos def, or yasiin bey for that matter.

Best guesses I can think of are Guerrilla Monsoon Rap or Good To You by Talib Kweli. Both of them have the high-pitched, slightly screechy strings you might associate with horror soundtracks and, in my head at least, Mos Def, Talib Kweli and Pharoahe Monch occupy the same sphere and could be confused. Or it might be this Pharoahe Monch track, Queens, which has an eerie vibe to it and is a direct lift of a Maxwell track that might explain your familiarity with it.

I doubt it's this as it doesn't match up with any of your other clues, but I might as well throw in Small World by Nas, which has that similar sound. Plus it is a criminally underrated tune, one of his best IMO, so always good to give it an airing.

thugler

These are good guesses, but not it. It has a kind of panicky edgy feel to it. I've also checked all of these artists for recent plays, and nothing. The beat is so familiar that I'm sure I'm going to catch it again one day and it'll click.

Utter Shit

This is annoying me now. We've got to find it.

The sample lasts about 4 beats and goes over and over, I can hear it in my head. It reminded me of captain scarlet or something, I don't think it is strings, but it sounds a bit screechy. If I was to describe it, there's a lower note, then 2 higher notes then a different lower note. It was heavy on verses and quite fast for hip hop. Almost certain I've heard it rapped over before. I can hear it in my head but it's kind of hard to describe what exactly is making the sound. I'm starting to doubt my memory a bit at this point!

poodlefaker

MF Doom or Madvillain or something like that?

Nope, not Doom or Madvillain

Pharoahe Monch- Simon says?

Has all the elements you described. 4 beat, horror film sample. All i can think really.

He's got it! Nice one. Is that some promotional thing?

I wasn't imagining it! Haha. The beat sounds quite dilla-ish. A track from his art gallery thing?

Robot DeNiro

It looks like some sort of advert. I don't know if the track exists in its own right, I hadn't heard it before.  I just searched YouTube for recent uploads including Mos Def. Hooray for procrastination!

Ah, ESG's 'UFO'. If we'd known it was that, we could have immediately narrowed it down to no more than 600 other songs.

Fuuuuuck. I knew I knew that fucking sound from somewhere. Apologies.

It's on Notorious BIG 'party and bullshit' and a Big Daddy Kane tune as well.

'The band's track "UFO" is one of the most sampled songs in history.'

Ya damn MORON

Malcy

I like it, didn't even occur to me that could be the sample!

Heard this pop song in Asda but didn't catch any lyrics. I think this is the melody from the end of the verse or pre-chorus:

I think it's Katy Perry. I don't know any titles though, sorry!
