Some music bios work. Gainsbourg Vie Heroique is great but I may be biased being a Serge obsessive fan.

Made by artist Joann Sfar it steers clear of many of the rock bio tropes and adds something to the man's myth. Well worth a watch.

There's a hugely entertaining Meatloaf biopic called To Hell and Back that's available on youtube. Here's the bit where he meets Jim Steinman for the first time.

I should add that I met McGee once and he was perfectly pleasant. He's a wally, no doubt about that, but he's not a nasty person. And Creation released some amazing records during its heyday. So (tiny) hats off to him for that. He made a lasting contribution to the world of pop and rock type stuff, but my God, he's been dining out on that brief chapter in his life for years.

Yes, I agree, Except that I've met him twice. So I'm much more connected than you.

Blame Jockice! He brought the subject up in another thread somewhere.
.

That's it. Blame me. Because it is my fault.

Anyway, the reason I'm in this thread is that I did my first bit of socialising of the year round at a friend's place yesterday and he's seen it and reckons it's quite good, although not as good as Good Vibrations.

I did attempt to record it when it was on Sky Movies, but apparently I'd have to sign up for the whole thing to watch it and since I rarely watch films, especially at home (rather embarrassingly the last one was about Eddie The Eagle) so am hoping it'll be available somewhere else soon. I know it's on NOW TV (that's how my mate saw it) but I haven't got any of that new fangled stuff. My girlfriend has but since she has practically no interest in modern music (and yes, I mean stuff from the 80s and 90s. That is modern music to me) my chances of getting her to sit down and watch it with me are slightly slim. However if someone makes a film called The Peter Sarstedt  Story...

But does anyone know anywhere I could watch it for free.

Given you're such good mates with McGee, maybe you could ask him for a copy? I bet he's got boxes of them in his spare bedroom.

Not seen Amadeus but for a split second there I thought that was a still from Velvet Goldmine and remembered that I like that one, but it probably doesn't count as a glam rock biopic, what with it being fictional and the characters only being very loosely based on Bowie and Iggy. I remember when that was in production and it emerged that Bowie had refused permission to use any of his songs in the film because he was in talks about doing a biopic about himself and saving them all for that. Never happened, shame. Then again, 90's Bowie? It might have been crap.

Anyway, watched Creation Stories last night and found it immensely enjoyable. Maybe this thread had just lowered my expectations but it was a lot of fun to watch. Spud was great in it too of course, perfect casting.

Sometimes you can get a free trial with NowTV/ NowFilm?

I get the negative comparisons with 24HPP but still found it entertaining nonsense all the same.  The Damned United of music biopics, if you will.

Well thanks to a kind poster who sent me a link I've seen it this morning, and as others have said, it's twaddle, but entertaining twaddle. It's actually not all that different to the Eddie The Eagle one that I mentioned upthread in that it takes an already interesting story and just makes things up that never happened (in the movie the young Eddie wears callipers. I've checked. In real life he didn't.) Still, neither Edwards or McGee seem too perturbed by the bending of fact into fiction. And if they don't mind,  why should I?

My mate was right though. It's not as good as Good Vibrations. If they'd included the cat shit incident it might have competed with it.

IMDb lists Steven Berkoff as playing Aleister Crowley.

...what?

I can sort of explain that. In the late 80s-early 90s McGee had a girlfriend from Sheffield called Belinda. She appeared on a couple of Creation Records sleeves. She was a nice lass (I had a brief 'thing' with her before she got together with him) but very impressionable and she had a friend (James something. I never met him) who was a bit of a dodgy character and into all that crap. So it's possible that McGee was influenced by her. Don't know why it ended up in the film though.

She later suffered from anorexia and mental health problems and died a few years ago. Which was a shame. The last time I saw her was at a showing of the  Creation Records documentary about ten years ago. McGee was there to do a q&a afterwards but she left before the film was even finished. She didn't look well at all.
