I can't wait to get back to Iceland again, though I'll probably just spend my days again in Kaffibarinn chatting with all manner of drunk sons and dóttirs.

Great footage, NoSleep!

Yeah amazing. Lord Of The Rings stuff.

Blofeld opting for deep cover this time.  Astonishing stuff, especially the drone shot.

Imagine being the first settlers to see this kind of thing. Wandering through harsh blizzards for months on end, across glaciers, passing steaming pools and vents, and the miles and miles of snow. And then suddenly that weird dark pustule of something 'alien' emerges as you pass over the brow of the hill. The treacherous heat yet inviting heat and the strange, scorched moving ground of bright orange and sliding rock.
It's no wonder people in the deeper, darker ages were religious.

And some mad Viking cooks a bit of pork on it.

I reckon someone at some point in the history, once put their foot in lava for a laugh because they didn't know what it was. Probably at the goading of an Icelandic version of Pubes Daz.

The live feed at night shows that the impression you get that the lava is cooling and solidifying during the day is completely false.

That drone footage is spectacular.

I hiked there today, its not that bad, your face does burn a little when very close to the lava, but not that bad, scary part was that one side of the volcano's wall collapsed today while i was nearby appreciating the lava spewing out of the crater, biggest oh sh*t moment ive had in a long time. 😂 ran up the mountain like lightning even after hiking there for 3 hours, after that the volcano became a bit more active though, started to shoot the lava out of the crater quite a bit higher than before the collapse, cool stuff though, took a cool little lava rock home as souvenier.

I'm so envious.

It's often theorised that the imagery of hell largely comes from people's experience of looking into volcanoes. Ever seen the Werner Herzog documentary Into the Inferno? It's a fascinating look at cultural perceptions of volcanoes.

As a Netflix subscriber it's kind of annoying that I knew nothing about this documentary until now.

Herzog has worked with the lovely dorky volcanologist who appears in that, Clive Oppenheimer, for a few documentaries now.

After calming down for a bit, the volcano seems to be puking it's lid again.

I feel sorry for the people who are going to have to clear up all that rock once it's solidified.

It's a great Herzog doc too, one of his best, certainly of recent years.

I watched it the same day as I posted. I liked it for the odd turns it took, looking at the mythology surrounding volcanoes. Was not expecting the portrait of life in NK.

Here's an interesting newscast that suggests the craters could collapse, that the ridge immediately next to the craters may create another crater (which is why it is empty now, whereas people were walking in that area in the first couple of days), that the whole valley will probably fill with lava in weeks and then continue flowing out of the area. It might go on, not for weeks but for years.

That's superb! It's the only video I've seen that's captured the sound of the volcano properly, and it wasn't till right near the end when that guy in the hi-viz wanders past that I realised just how thick the lava flow is.

The next one in the series is both hilarious and fascinating in equal measure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldN8H5Tz76g

The volcano is a 'consistent bastard', apparently. :-D

Johnny Yesno

Oh, look how it was a week ago, when they did their first volcano video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3BD8vqYTho

Some beautiful shots at the end.

It's what drones were made for.
You can clearly see a fiery-eyed, lolling-tongue demon there. And it's angry... You can easily imagine ye olde worlde Icelanders shittin' themselves and wondering how they're gonna appease the psycho bastard.
