Edit- quite weak for a new page

Neville Chamberlain

I think this volcano and the boat getting stuck up the canal will be the two big "feel-good" stories of 2021.

NoSleep

I've noticed that, for the last week, the comments in the live chat, on the volcanocam, have been using the name "Bob" to refer to the volcano, and have wondered if this was thing in the wider world. Having searched (for 5 seconds), I only came up with this: https://is.linkedin.com/in/bob-the-iceland-volcano-82547148

Ooh, a new crack! And that version of the livestream has sound! Happy days!

Drone footage of the new fissure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jN8antDmcoA

It's a little distance from BOB and pouring down a different outlet, but you can see BOB to the left as the drone travels up the valley toward the fissure.

I think they're putting a stop to letting people visit the site. Not surprising really. Who knows what going on below ground if something like this can appear hundreds of yards from the original site.

Got a mate who lives in Iceland. He went to go and look at the volcano. He said it was one of the best things he'd ever seen.

Of course you have. Of course he did! Of course it was.
Bollocks. Arseclap.

You can really see how fast the lava is flowing from this one. Bob's lava seems to be mostly under a crust of ash giving the illusion that it's moving slowly.

I don't know if you've seen it yet but this drone footage of Bob is amazing:

ICELANDIC VOLCANO ERUPTION 4K - Flying through the lava: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJ-dutQXUtg

Given that so many drones have apparently been lost videoing Bob, I'm surprised this isn't one of them.

It's been "filling up the bathtub" for the most part. The "speed" of the new fissure is about the incline that it's descending in a narrow stream. What has been the most revealing is how long lava persists in its liquid state after expelling from the craters. I guess the sheer quantity helps to retain the high temperatures for long periods. I have to remind myself that this liquid state is the normal for most of the mass of the planet. We're just catching a glimpse here.

Also discovered that you would not sink into lava as if it was water, due to its density, and even if a little splash of lava at the craters hit you it would feel like you were being hit by a rock (which you are). So weird to see rock behaving as if it was the sea.

A third fissure has opened between the first two. This is quite a good explanation of what's going on:

NoSleep, from the comments, it seems the original Geldingadalur vent was dubbed Bob, as you thought, and the second fissure was dubbed Flo.

Valur and Art are on the case and this video is a corker:

Whoa! Look how big the new volcano is already! And the speed of the lava flow!

These just get better and better:

Blimey, there a point in that when one of the craters starts gushing lava much faster and they're just standing there in the path of the flow going "ooh look at that" instead of wondering whether that's the best possible reaction.

Yes, that's great, isn't it? I feel sorry for our jaded friend a few posts up.

Neville Chamberlain

Ah, good old Valur Grettisson! Been watching his lockdown reports from Reykjavik over the past few months (on the Reykjavik Grapevine page). Seems like a good sort, not the sort of chap I'd like to see swallowed up in a massive burning lava hole.

Fantastic. I'd swear I heard English accents in one of those videos. I wonder how realistic it is to get a plane there, stay in a quarantine hotel for five days and then get transport to and from the starting point of the hike to the area.

I've lost count but there were 8 by this morning.

Valur says seven, plus a possibility of one hiding under the lava, in that video. Again, Art's video footage is wonderful.

Johnny Yesno

Perhaps I misunderstood him, though. This video says eight:

Will it ever stop? Does it just calm down after a bit. When the earths crust cools or something

Still going strong, possibly stronger. BOB has closed down, as have many other craters. It's all now concentrated to one crater which is throwing a lava geyser up to 250m high.

Ah, yeah! I was watching that earlier. It's fantastic, isn't it?

Captain Z

Are there any good videos that show the current extent of the lava coverage from above?

I like this drone close-up of one of the active chambers. Almost doesn't look real.
