Gaming laptop thread
« on: March 26, 2021, 06:15:58 PM »
I've had a gaming laptop for donkey's, and I quite like having it. Portability is a handy thing for me.

But mine is getting on a bit, and I've just got a nice big cheque from the government, so I was thinking of spending it on a new one. I had this one in mind - an Acer Predator Helios 300 - but I'm paralysed by the amount of choice there is. Is there anything sticking out to the more technically minded CaBbers, or does it look alright? Is there something you've bought recently that you'd recommend?

That's a good one. I had the same model*, but with the 1060 GPU installed. Could play most stuff on high settings, nice build, good screen, keyboard, etc. I now have the Alienware 51m with 2080 (upgraded for 3d graphics work stuff) so pretty much on par with the one in your link GPU wise although it's heavy af and has two big separate power packs to run it. Got it second hand for 1600 which is a fortune to me but I need it for work stuff, and they're 3000 new so not a bad deal.

The fans on the 300 can be pretty loud, although that's par for the course with gaming laptops.

*actually still have it, keeping it as a backup for travel (eventually) because the new one is too bulky/valuable.

Consider getting one from PC Specialist. You can configure it exactly how you want it and they're a hell of a lot cheaper. I've recently taken delivery of a new one from them and I've had my last one from them for 8 years (still use it for work, just wanted a meatier one for gaming and music production).

Nice idea, Non Stop Dancer, but I don't live in the UK any more. Although I might look for a similar service over here.

I went for that Acer in the end. My last one was an Acer and it's lasted me 6 years or so with zero complaints - I even cracked the back of it while moving house a few years ago and it's still going strong.

I feel like it might be a gimmick, but I've gone for one of those cooling mat things too. If only to stop it cooking my poor delicate clockweights when it's sat on my lap.
