In defence of Sparky comic, its lead character for over 200 issues was the eponymous 'Sparky', a black schoolboy getting up to various adventures.

It was still going on in the 90s, there was a Roger the Dodger strip where he pretended to be Chinese and went ‘ah so, ah so’. He dressed up as a Chinese person with a pigtail and mask in another strip and some Chinese people made him eat birds’ nest soup to teach him a lesson.

I'd never considered Walter the Softy as homophobic (although there are clearly elements of it in hindsight), but it did fall into the category of it being ok to bully anyone who was considered in any way nerdy, gentle, or generally not a cunt.
That said, from memory, Walter and his Chums got their revenge on Dennis about as often as the other way around, so it was pitched as a somewhat even fight.

In regards to the the racism in the opening comics, as someone who grew up on Disney films like this, I'm not even the tiniest bit surprised.

Jesus, I was trying to remember where I saw some heinous anti-asian shit in the Beano and the birds nest soup detail really brought it back. It was definitely that. I remember "forced to eat birds nest soup" being a running joke punchline in several strips. It probably wasn't as common as I remember but it came up more than once. I want to say, Calamity James? But this forum won't want me to besmirch Baxendale.

I used to read Whizzer and Chips and (later) Buster. I remember then being fairly decent - Phil Fitt was a black character but his comedy trait was that he was a health nut. Watford Gapp (he's the king of rap) was just a regular guy who had whimsical adventures, IIRC. I suppose being a black guy who "raps" is a bit of a cliche, but....

Mustafa Million was a bit of a stereotype too - a rich Arab. But he used his money to have great fun with all his white mates.

I think there was one about a Chinese guy who was a kung-fu fighter with a Chinese braided queue hairstyle (so about 100 years out of date at least) who biffed up bullies, but I think that might have been an old strip from the 70s revived to fill a gap.

Calamity James was a creation of the somewhat Baxendale influenced Tom Paterson, not Baxendale himself.

Getting a bit off-topic here, but Calamity James is a good example of something I really enjoyed as a child, but find quite grim and nasty as an adult. That had more to do with sensitivities changing with age than social progress though, I think. See also: Don Bluth films.
