Kankurette

Not a massive hip-hop fan, my music taste is pretty white (I do like some soul, house and R'n'B though), but I like Cypress Hill, and the Wu-Tang Clan were a lot of fun at Primavera 2013.

Tunes I like (I'm not sure how many of these count though, I am a philistine):
Audio Bullys - The Things
Cardi B - I Like It
Cypress Hill - Ain't Goin' Out Like That
DJ Pretia - Timmy Turner
DMX - X Gon' Give It to Ya
Eminem - Lose Yourself
Handsome Boy Modelling School - The World's Gone Mad
NERD - Lapdance
NORE - Nothin'
Prince Paul - Psychosomatics (Convergent Thought)
Salt 'n' Pepa - Push It
Subliminal - Ha'Finali
Wu-Tang Clan - Shame on a Nigga

Also 6 Days by DJ Shadow/Mos Def but that probably doesn't count. Always reminds me of going clubbing in high school. And Shutdown by Skepta (grime), which was on the Everton changing room playlist thanks to Yannick Bolasie.

Salt 'n' Pepa were pretty credible in the early days.

As a 12 year old I had two cassette tapes of MC Hammer but I'm not recommending him. Push It isn't really even hip hop, it's pop. Hip pop if you will. For me hip hop appreciation skews heavily to the underground, as opposed to trotting out the usual 5 albums by Public Enemy and De La Soul that everyone knows already.

Genuine old man question: does anyone "scratch" on records any more?

Can only answer this in the context of DJing, and not whether modern hip hop music itself uses vinyl scratching as often. So not sure this answers your question. The answer is yes, but a great deal of djs have moved away from vinyl and onto time-code vinyl. TC vinyl allows huge gains in music storage, time-efficiency (at the decks), auto-synching, cuing, looping, triggering samples and effects etc. The skills associated with scratching still form the foundations of much of a performance, but the scratch itself is increasingly part of a wider range of techniques employed

People do scratch on formats other than vinyl/TC vinyl but they remain the standard.

Here's an example of the evolution with Craze in the late 90s and then a recent one.

A scratch here and a scratch there is fine but some lads like Q-Bert and those scratch pickles seem to build an entire act off it. This is very impressive but I can't imagine sitting through 90 minutes of it because it's not music, it's more like high level performance that gets in the way of the music. You can't settle and enjoy a groove because there's all this noise coming at you.

That's exactly what it is. They're turntablists doing performance pieces. Even when doing more expansive sets intended for dancing or listening, I find DJs like Craze to be unlistenable.

DJ Fly did a good golden hip hop mix that really nicely balanced the turntablism and music. Starts a bit frenetic of course but it's decent overall

Give the Griselda boys a go.

This.

Their consistency is outmatched right now. Always putting out projects and almost all of them top quality. I think Conway is my favourite of the three at the minute, but it fluctuates.

Plus they work with The Alchemist a lot, who has been absolutely killing it production wise for the past couple of years. Love his work with Freddie Gibbs too.

Yes! I've only given it a couple of listens so far, though, so need to get back to it. It didn't grab me as immediately as the last Armand Hammer album actually. But definitely some strong stuff there from my first listens.

Little Simz is so great.

So fucking awesome! I got into her last year after listening to Stormzy's two underwhelming albums and thought to myself "Is this really the best the UK has to offer?", then found Simz via Rate Your Music's UK hip hop list and was blown away from the opening track.

Can anyone help identify where I think I've heard the chorus from her track 'Selfish' before? It seems so familiar, I assumed it was a sample but WhoSampled? doesn't have any samples listed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSSKDIcpdSE - It's been doing my head in for a year.

Nice one! And thanks to everyone else for their suggestions. Gonna put together a playlist of all the tracks I don't know.

Much appreciated!

Utter Shit

It's an unreal track - the drums on that and Off The Books are my favourite of all hiphop drum loops I think (along with Papa Was Too by Joe Tex, which has been samples a billion times), I have sampled them myself a ridiculous number of times. Weirdly I've never really been that bothered about Slum Village more generally, but Fall N Love is an all time classic for sure.

chveik

yep great song

fuck this rap shit i listen to classical

Popular opinion but that and Pharcyde - Runnin' are my two favourite Dilla tracks.

Utter Shit

Probably same for me, throw in that Janet Jackson tune Got Til It's Gone too.

Agree about Fall in Love too.

Jam & Lewis, but it's inspired by his remix of Brand New Heavies - Sometimes apparently.

He did a nice remix though.

Utter Shit

Blimey, I've been under the impression it was Dilla for twenty years or so.

Just having a look through his production credits now, didn't realise he did The Light and So Far To Go by Common, that's anothe two all time classics for me.

I'm sure I read somewhere that he was involved in the original uncredited - maybe drum programming, there's no doubt that it's heavily inspired by his sound and I think J&L are very open about that.

I got into him well late, about 8 years ago having only passing knowledge before that - but once I understood where he was coming from and his sampling techniques I was totally hooked..

jobotic

His Stereolab sampling here is fantastic. It's one of their very best songs but the recurring clipped snare makes this.

Loving this party track from G Perico & Rucci.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrYAoJuOe7I

It's got a proper old skool 90s vibe to it, complete with Tom Tom Club sample. Just two minutes, too.
