I NOTICE NOBODY MENTIONED ANY ANTARCTICAN FILMS FUCKING HEMISPHERISTS

There is that Werner Herzog one but maybe that's cultural imperialism

Remake for 13 Assasins but I'v not seen the original I admit, the Miike ness actually works best in a seemingly more conventional film for me.

Original for Hari-Kiri

Same here. The Harakiri remake is alright, but it doesn't really add much.

Don't mention the war!

You could argue the kind of anti establishment sentiment Miike brings was already there in the original, again not seen the original 13 Assasins but I'm guessing probably more room for Miike to add that in.

What does stand out for me is that Mizoguchi doesnt get picked much, he does generally seem to have dropped off relative to Kurosawa, Ozu and Kobayashi in popularity.

Right lads, problem solved.

If this was the real world the other animals (walruses?) would rip Erik and his Dad to bits, leaving only a bloody stain on the snow. Plus ca change

The Lives of Others

Good movie. Have you seen "Ochu" (The Ear)? I saw this movie after "The Lives of Others", but liked it more. Very similar themes, but more domestic.

Has anyone heard of Studio Ghibli

I've heard about it, but I've only seen about five animated movies.

Does anyone have anything to contribute to a thread on non euro movies? I had a big long think and I was quite embarrassed by how few I'd seen outside of ones produced by Japan and Hong Kong.

I mean those are some of the most developed locations for cinema, espeically art cinema,

Besides them perhaps Iran and Taiwan? they've been putting out well reguarded art cinema since the 80's at least.

Don't encourage Mort to make more list threads, for Christ's sake. He'll have one for every continent if you encourage him.

1. Goodbye, Dragon Inn

really? i've really enjoyed some Tsai films (Vive l'amour, What Time Is It There?) but i was utterly bored by this one. maybe i wasn't in the mood.

5. Daughter of the Nile

incidentally i also watched this one recently and while it's far from being a bad film but i found it less engaging than the other Hou films i've seen. it lacked the historical depth and the wonderful long takes he's used to.

Question: are there any particular foreign language directors whose work you cannot stand? My vote goes to Godard

There's a handful that are 7/10's, and maybe Les Mepris is an 8/10, but I think he's overrated. He's certainly no Bresson.

I've seen three Tarkovsky, and have no interest in seeing the movie he made in the 80s (or Solaris)

He's absolutely no Bresson. Bresson is best.

I've seen all of the Tarkovskys and they're pretty much all 10/10 apart from the final two which are still near-perfect and worth your time.
