speaking of a noose, "The Noose" is a good movie and possibly still on YouTube.

I have a few Asian and African movies on my list. Not that I give a shit about checking off the boxes - I like what I like, but would like to check out some Chinese or South American movies. I think part of that problem is the availability, and European movies tend to be the ones most available.

I even started a "Not-so-popular foreign movie" thread a week ago. There's always one or two who constantly bitch. Enjoy menopause.

It's notable how little Indian films tend to turn up in these lists given that Indian cinema is viewed by way more people across the globe compared to Hollywood. Apparently quite popular in Russia of all places.

In the UK at least, Mubi is one of the few services to dedicate some time to it.

Talulah, really!

I found most Godard's unbearable but do like Alphaville and to a lesser-extent, Breathless

Mmm actually I like a little bit of Une Femme est une Femme but it's still irritatingly twee. Godard is so fucking twee

Sebastian Cobb

I think that's why I like Alphaville, 'cos it isn't really. That and a bit like the Tarkovsky stuff any random frame could make a still you'd happily hang on your wall.

godard made his best work in the 80s

Oh also Plemya/The Tribe

Yeah I watched that recently and it certainly made an impression. Not sure how much I really liked it but it was incredibly powerful and skillfully made.

"Pather Panchali" might be a popular Indian movie, but its still good. Sometimes its a matter of good taste triumphing, as opposed to the usual diluting of offering.

I recommend "Dry Summer" (Turkish) and Egyptian movies from the 60s like "Adrift On The Nile" (or "Chitchat on the Nile), "Cairo Station", "Cairo 30"

Midas

Many of my favourites have already been mentioned in this thread but here's a few I like:

Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970), Czechoslovakia
The Hunt (2012), Denmark
The Fire Within (1963), France
Dogtooth (2009), Greece
Memories of Murder (2003), South Korea
The Collector (2002), Turkey

Also...

Perfect Blue (1997), Japan
Millenium Actress (2001), Japan
Tokyo Godfathers (2003), Japan
Paprika (2006), Japan

Good movie. Have you seen "Ochu" (The Ear)? I saw this movie after "The Lives of Others", but liked it more. Very similar themes, but more domestic.
Not seen it. Will try and check it out.

Don't encourage Mort to make more list threads, for Christ's sake. He'll have one for every continent if you encourage him.

I can be a bit empty but it does provide an alternative to CaB otherwise seeming to be a bit unwilling to memtnion what people really love, does seem discussion tends to focus on the obscure and the average quite alot seeming for fear of looking pretentious by mentioning a Bergman/Tarkovsky film.

Lots of great movies, and although this used to be my favorite foreign movie (I was a teen then), it's nice to see someone list "The Edukators" - first time I've seen someone mention it.

That looks fun, will check it out

Kankurette

In no particular order: Todo Sobre Mi Madre, Amores Perros, Puella Magi Madoka Magica Rebellion, The Lives of Others, Goodbye Lenin, Belleville Rendezvous, Spirited Away. Yes, I am aware that I have terrible taste.

Micmacs is on my to watch list, any good?

ETA: have also seen The Edukators, it was boss. Saw it in The Cornerhouse with the German Society at uni.

Sebastian Cobb

Micmacs is alright, I wouldn't say it's essential and it feels a bit of a 'more of the same' but it's enjoyable enough.
