2001: a pace odyssey is a more accurate title for the actual film, it is a very boring film. 

Apparently the original idea was for the monolith to be more of a jive talking sidekick, but they lacked the technical ability to do that because Eddie Murphy hadn't been invented yet. Also the computer Hal Computerman was going to be on wheels so he could move about more and shoot at people with his laser. They actually started filming some scenes of that but then Stanley Kubrick's mum found out he was using her shopping cart without permission.

Anyway, without those elements the film didn't really have much going for it, so they slowed down all the usable footage by 20% and released it without a laugh track. Luckily for them, the Vietnam war had just come out, and that made absolutely everything seem amazing in comparison, so the film was very successful.
