Cameron to be probed over Greensill lobbying

Interesting that a probe into Cameron's lobbying of ministers on behalf of Greenshill Capital has been announced during the mourning period following the death of the Duke. It's almost like the government wanted to keep it relatively low-key.

This follows the report that Hancock met former PM David Cameron and financier Lex Greensill for a "private drink" in 2019 to discuss a new payment scheme for the NHS.

Greensill advised Cameron's government earlier in his career, with an office based in 10 Downing Street.

Cameron claims he has not broken any codes of conduct or lobbying rules but should have contacted ministers through "formal" channels.

Ooh I wonder what the outcome will be?

Heads are gonna roll!!

Taking bets on what will happen:

Cameron in prison / with a criminal record 100000000/1
Hancock ditto 10000000000000/1
Junior subordinate takes the rap evens
Fuck all 1/5

Shoulders?-Stomach!

Mass resignations all the way up to the PM. Mass incarcerations all the way up to the PM. Starmer panics and resigns too.

Corbyn smashes through a wall and saves us all.

Or fuck all.

Rich Uncle Skeleton

Ohhhh I wouldn't want to be David Cameron right now!!

Buelligan

Is he going to go off and live on a tropical island or something?  Surely not.  Not after all of this!?

Second disappointedly inaccurate thread title of the day.

Mr_Simnock

the only probing he's been involved in surround the events of a pigs head at a party

Will the grown ups in control of Labour be all mature and hard working and dig into this properly and start using it to hound the government? Seems like the kind of thing that grown ups would be good at, all those dull but important details, and Keith's supposed to be a legal wiz, so this should be an open goal for the party of opposition, yeah?

I mean, they've got to start opposing the Tories at some point, right? Right!?

QuoteA top civil servant joined financial firm Greensill Capital as an adviser while still working for the government, a lobbying watchdog has revealed.

Bill Crothers's part-time position had been "agreed" to by the Cabinet Office, the Office of the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments added.

Its chairman Lord Pickles complained of a "lack of transparency" over the situation.

But Mr Crothers said he had been taken on by Greensill in a "transparent" way.

Remember when people used to shrug and talk about Zambia or post-soviet Russia as gangster-filled cleptocracies?  Remember when Adam Curtis seemed strange?  Run away if you still can.

It's the Left who are the lunatics, the liars, the cultists, right?

You know what will happen? Fuck all!
You know what the opposition will do? Fuck all!

Not if we don't let it.

Come back Guy Dorks, all is forgiven.

Because only a footballer cares that, whilst politicians dip the public purse, children are being offered this to eat -

Children are writing letters like this -

whilst public servants get pay offs in the millions, using our money.

And Cameron's not alone.

QuoteThe government has rejected Labour's call for a full parliamentary inquiry into lobbying and the contacts between government and Greensill Capital.

Boris Johnson has launched a review by a government lawyer into the finance firm's links to David Cameron and top civil servants in his administration.

Labour wants a broader inquiry into lobbying by a cross-party panel of MPs.

The government says its review is the "right thing to do" and will order Tory MPs to vote against Labour's plan.

Labour says the government "cannot be trusted to mark their own homework on this".

Buelligan

Think Labour nicked that line from Ash Sarkar.

Buelligan

And Labour and the Tories, competing with each other to be the party of business, give a thought, if you can be fucking arsed, you bent cunts, for all the self employed and small business owners currently fucked by lack of support during the pandemic or fucked by back-dated tax demands (some of them actually killing themselves, I believe) whilst utter bastards like Cameron are busy skimming.  I'd guillotine the fucking lot of you, the worst sort of human.

Novara's Downstream interview with Gabriel Pogrund is excellent if you want to understand what the hell has been going on:

Yes, that's going to be watched tonight.  But it's not that complicated, is it?  I say this having not watched the decomplication of it so I may not understand.  Wasn't it just a spiv cunt in a suit offering pay day loans to the government, across various departments, including the NHS - why would a government need pay day loans[nb]In one case, covering the debt of the NHS to pharmacists (off their tits) because the NHS was slow in paying them.  Rather than the fucking government just paying these junkies quicker.[/nb]? - and Cameron and high profile civil servants (some of whom are now conveniently dead, so can't give evidence against others or protect their own reputations) opening doors and helping themselves to a slice[nb]In some cases, like Cameron's, believed to be worth tens of millions in shares at the time[/nb] for doing it?

Now, of course, all gone tits up - the old old story of bad debts without good security - and companies like Gupta Steel (along with their workforces) are fooked.  Cameron still smiling.

These things are usually deliberately complicated.

Fine tradition of chucking the prompt payment policy in the bin every February, so that your health board/trust/department/whatever can limit their in-year overspend.

You might quibble that all this does is mean you have to spend the money next financial year, thereby perpetuating the cycle, but best not to think about that.

Oh, interesting. The motivation for late payments wasn't mentioned, unfortunately. Another example of how austerity led to wealth transfers to the rich.

The vast majority of people don't give a shit about this sort of thing unless the media they consume tells them to. So lucky we have a media that's dedicated to holding the Tories to account.

Oh.

Fambo Number Mive

BBC seem to be mainly focusing on this in terms of how it is being used for PMQS.

Mind you Johnson was laughable in the House, even using his time as Mayor of London as a defence over lobbying.

A Labour MP asked a good question about why government press conferences didn't use sign language for briefings - Johnson says he will write to the MP as soon as he can.

The final question was from a Tory MP on litter - was the MP asked to ask it to make Johnson look better by allowing the PM to talk about the government increasing increasing on-the-spot fines for littering?

Fambo Number Mive

Plans for a parliamentary inquiry into lobbying have been defeated by 357 votes to 262.
