Doesn't help when a member of the Labour frontbench was also lobbying for the company.

When it comes to corporate lobbying and the 'revolving door' (which, let's not forget, also involves so much of the traditional media), and the long-standing relationships between big business and the Conservative Party, one thing you have to remember is that David Cameron fucked a pig

Sebastian Cobb

The best part is the opposition can't really argue against the root cause of this (private money affecting political decision-making) since they're trying to pretend they're friends of business and offering cash for access, trying to win back big donors etc.

Got to treat it as a bad incident or reframe it as "sleaze".

The Dog

Easy to criticise David Cameron, but he had to take charge of a country where only the super rich could afford a drone, and people washed their hands once or maybe twice a day at most. It was a different time and we can't judge him by the standards of today.

As Pogrund pointed out in that Novara interview, it wasn't even a 'revolving door' in this instance but a clear conflict of interests.

The Dog

Just can't stop thinking about those filthy hands.

Never mind, the Mail on Sunday have decided it's all Labour's fault: https://twitter.com/Simon_Vessey/status/1383518495330033668

How long before Dan Hodges gets a peerage?

This doesn't look good for Corbyn

I would say, rather than a Labour mole, Cabinet probably has more than one member working for the old spooks, maybe they'd prefer someone else in the top job.  Who can say?  We shall have to await their pleasure.

But of course those slitty eyes are just coz he's a mole with their famously poor eyesight. Absolutely nothing racist there. Maybe you are the real racist for seeing such filth. Or maybe racism doesn't exist whatsoever in any form. I can't remember. What day is it again?

The buck teeth err, theyre for eating worms or something.

Also the Labour Party are a bunch of bumbling incompetents that couldnt be trusted to stir a cup of tea, while simultaneously also so fucking on top of it theyre in charge of a secret spy network that is traitorously derailing all of Boris' best laid plans for our great nation.

Dan Hodges is a scrag end.

we should think ourselves lucky that Dan Hodges is incredibly thick and not good at his job. Imagine the damage he could do if he was intelligent enough to use question marks. all he really does affirm selfish old fuckers to stay as they are, no one's converted by obsequious tory shite he spews.

incessant reminder his mum is Glenda Jackson.

George Eustace is another level of scum altogether. I blame the collective media...allowing things to drift year in year out to this point where ministers can openly stick the finger to the masses and declare "it doesn't matter what we do, you don't need to know, VERMIN". Scum.

Some more relevations from the Independent and its dreadful website:

QuoteDavid Cameron and Lex Greensill repeatedly lobbied the Bank of England for support for finance company Greensill Capital, messages released by the Bank have revealed.

The Bank today released a series of emails and letters from the former prime minister, some of which showed senior officials at Threadneedle Street agreeing to phone calls with Cameron and Greensill.

It came as the first parliamentary inquiry into Greensill lobbying of the government opened with a warning from the chair of the Commons Public Accounts Committee, Meg Hillier, of the dangers of "government by WhatsApp".

The Treasury's most senior civil servant, Sir Tom Scholar, told the committee that Greensill had "persistently" lobbied his officials, and that he had personally spoken with Cameron by phone, saying it was "quite natural" that he should take a call from a man who he worked for during his time at Downing Street.

Now the Bank of England release, in response to a Freedom of Information request, has confirmed that Cameron, who was employed as a senior adviser to Greensill at the time, had also persistently lobbied Threadneedle Street...

QuoteThe Treasury's top civil servant has confirmed that David Cameron lobbied him by mobile phone on behalf of finance firm Greensill, telling an MPs' committee it was "quite natural" for officials to take calls from people they had previously worked with.

Permanent secretary Sir Tom Scholar told the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee that Mr Cameron had his work mobile number because he had worked from him during his time as prime minister.

He told the committee - which has launched an inquiry into the company's lobbying of government - that the Treasury was contacted "persistently" by Greensill representatives but insisted their approaches were dealt with in a "completely appropriate" way.

Contacts included a number of text messages from Cameron in March and April 2020, but the 7 April call was the last contact he had with the former PM, who was employed as a senior adviser by Greensill...

You can see the Bank of England emails here: https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/freedom-of-information/2021/communications-between-david-cameron-and-senior-bank-officials-about-greensill-capital-and-the-ccff

I suppose Cameron helps keep Johnson and Hancock out the news.

Also this from the Times (behind a paywall):

QuoteHow the actual former prime minister nagged the NHS, in the middle of a pandemic, (with some success) to sign its workers up to a two bit payday loan scheme app that would make him millions.

Cameron is currently being questioned by MPs over the Greenshill lobbying.

QuoteEarlier in the exchanges, Cameron insisted a text message he sent last year to a top Treasury official which appeared to show advance knowledge of a Bank of England rate cut was a spelling mistake.

The message - one of more than 40 released this week before the comitttee hearing - said: "Never quite understood how rate cuts help a pandemic."

Asked about the message, Cameron says: "I've been rather baffled by this text message... I think I'm a victim of spellcheck here - I think it was about a VAT cut... I think I was responding to something that was in the news."

QuoteMs Hardy asks if he regrets taking away government attention from dealing with the pandemic by sending 56 messages to various officials.

Cameron says he accepts one of the reasons for his persistence was because the company had not got a good initial proposal over to the Treasury.

He says he thinks it was "appropriate" for him to use the channels to message he did, but in future lobbyists should "restrict themselves far more" - to one letter or one email.

The former PM adds that civil servants have told him his communications were appropriate, because government is always open to proposals from business.

Refuses to say how much he would be paid working for Greensill.
