I don't know how Moshiri compares to the Americans. But I don't want people like the Glazers near Everton either.

How about Alisher Usmanov? His company paid us (amongst other sponsorship things) £30m just to be the first option for naming rights on the new stadium, not for the naming rights themselves, just to be asked first. Moshiri is potentially just the lube.

It's a sordid business and I'm glad I found myself a second club (non-league, fan-owned, community focussed) to support 18 months ago, it's showed me there is another way to enjoy and support football.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

There are some absolutely rancid tinpot equivalents of PL owners all the way down the pyramid which leaves you thinking that 50+1 (hopefully more, but at a minimum) and a system of redistribution that guarantees a necessary % for survival each year is a better way.

Fan's won't be able to raise the cash to pay that even if it was offered I imagine, so more likely would be fan representation and consultation built in on the basis of the 50+1 rule. That would require legislation though so who knows.

See, this is the problem: a lot of fans will put up with any old shit for the sake of loyalty or routine or whatever. For every fan who wants to boycott, there's ten who will keep turning up, no matter how useless Ashley the Hutt is. It's depressing. It happens with Everton every fucking season when we have a bad patch, the Park End das moan about how they're going to boycott the matches and burn their season tickets and this is the worst season ever and Martinez/Koeman/Silva/Ancelotti/Allardyce/your mum is worse than Mike Walker and they've been supporting Everton for a gajillion years but won't any more, and you know full well they'll still be turning up. As will Sheffield Wednesday fans, no matter how much they bitch about Chansiri. I always ask them why they go if they hate it so much. I stopped going to Goodison Park for reasons I don't want to go into, I can't understand why these people keep going because all they do is fucking moan. Farhad Moshiri is not going to eat your firstborn if you don't buy a season ticket.

Newcastle were in my dreams last night. I don't know why. Maybe I have a latent crush on Steve Bruce.

I do feel some of it as well is "it could be us" in terms of a Man City like injection of blood money.

Can't say I'm happy about him either. I've heard some dodgy rumours about him.

My second club are Sheffield Wednesday but I also follow Cambridge, my parents' local team. League 2 might not be glamourous but it's a refreshing change from the bullshit of the PL.

I think a lot of it is to do with City. City got the oil money, they ended up surpassing Man United, Everton fans hope our Iranian sugar daddy will do the same so we can seriously compete with Liverpool, except it hasn't happened yet. And fans aren't patient. They want results NOW.

Yeah, in the oft-quoted German model that's how it works: the members aren't expected to stump up for, say, Lewandowski's wages, but they have a 51% stake in decision-making.

The Culture Bunker

Seems some United fans held an anti-Glazer protest outside the training ground this morning - I'll be interested if the likes of Neville say much on it. I suspect that now the Super League project has fallen apart (for now), it'll be more to just "back to normal" rather than looking to change the root causes of what brought about it. Then act appalled when it happens again.

You can only work with the players you've got.

Whilst is really why a lot of this celebration of "fan power" leaves a bad taste in the mouth for me, Chelsea fans standing up for financial inequality in the game seems to be a pretty fundamental lack of self awareness.

Uncle TechTip

It's better than them not standing up though.

G Nev did say he felt complicit over the Glazers in an in-studio piece with Jamie Prolespitter

How does that work in practice? Presumably it's only things of a certain magnitude that go to the fans and not how much they should charge for a beer or whether to extend the contract of players etc?

Is it though? if anything it seems like it can lead to a further lack of self awareness, it seems like a reaction based less on "standing up for the good of the game" and more clinging onto a fantasy of equality that is the status quo.

Oh, definitely. And gobbing off at Petr Cech and calling him a traitor when he tried to calm things down.

The one thing I can think of re fan power working was when Liverpool fans walked out en masse as a protest against prices. And we're talking a LOT of Liverpool fans.

sevendaughters

any push to 50+1 will be smoked out as socialism and anti-excellence without a shred of irony.

monkfromhavana

Not sure if anyone's posted this, but it's an interesting read on the economics of the ESL

As I'm not German I'm not totally sure but I think that the fans/members elect the club president and some of the directors and if those people don't represent the interests of the fans then all hell breaks loose.

sevendaughters

there are fans in the boardroom, elected by fan groups. the fans trust the board and staff to do their bit, but have critical power to intervene.

chveik

not a big fan of he German system. they approach 17, 18 years old french players that have barely played in the first team, give a lot of money to their agents/family and there we go. i suppose it's more sustainable economically but it's scummish behaviour. clubs in other countries do the same thing obviously, but they're doing it on an industrial scale.

Chedney Honks

Fan power is one of the worst things but I also like the idea of people resisting cunts, except fans are also all fucking cunts, but cunts v cunts is great because hopefully they start shooting at each other.
