Who have people said you look like?
« on: April 24, 2021, 01:02:35 AM »
Now that society has started to reopen drunk strangers are once again giving me their unsolicited opinion about who I look like. According to some rheumy eyed old soak on a Croydon tram this evening I now resemble Brian 'It Is A Puppet' Conley, which I will absolutely take over Blodwyn Pig's recent soul crushing 'Graham Linehan' verdict. That's what a haircut does for you I suppose. Who, Cook'd and Bomb'd, have people said YOU look like?

Edwyn Collins has let himself go. Tin Tin has let himself go. Ray Liotta has let himself go. Jason Isbell has let himself go. Stan Laurel has let himself go. Rodney Trotter has let himself go. A photo of a boy pretending to be Beavis printed on the readers letters page of a Beavis and Butthead comic has let himself go. One specific photo of journalist Joe Muggs has let itself go. A member of 1981 one hit wonders Funkapolitan has let himself go.

I've had Edwyn Collins too (not in that way, eh readers?!?!)

Also...

Nigel Planer
Richard Ashcroft
Jarvis Cocker
Louis Theroux

Just any man who's quite tall, lugubrious and geeky-looking really.

I used to get Linehan comparisons a bit (thankfully before he went so publicly mad). Dan Aykoyd too. After he went mad.

But then weirdly I've also had Syd Barrett, soi I wonder if my friends all suffer from very poor eyesight.

Frank Black at a Fugazi gig when Pixies were playing at the same time several miles away (the logistics? come on!)

Ian Stewart of Skrewdriver – long since dead at the time of asking. Stopped shaving soon after that, which leads to ...

Neurosis - I don't know which one, but the question came from a very attractive Japanese woman in a tiny record shop in Osaka, who said, 'Are you ... Neurosis?' They were playing in the city that night, but given that the entire record shop population - all four of them - all turned round to see what the answer was, any fleeting thoughts of sexual masquerading and malfeasance on my part quickly evaporated with witnesses at such close proximity. Also, morals.

El-P - probably the least offensive erroneous pairing.

Not me but a work mate very closely resembled Rod Stewart. This was in the 70's and if you wanted to become invisible all you had to do was stand next to him in the pub or club.

When I used to have a beard I had at least five different people tell me I look like a young Kenny Everett. He was a handsome guy so I always took that as very flattering.

Ian McCullough once pointed at me and yelled “Hey look, it’s Jools Holland”  [/Jockice]

Which Ian McCulloch though?

As for me, every red-haired fucker in the history of music and indeed world history. From Jimmy Somerville to Carol Decker. And including Rick Astley (a lot), Dave Rowntree (several times), Ed Sheeran (too often) and borderline ginge Steve Shelley (that's a specialist indie one). And because I wear specs, Chris Fucking Evans. Not even the actor one.

I also got Edwyn Collins a lot (but I suspect that's because I'm Scottish and have always worn checked shirts and stripey t-shirts. Even as a child), Bono a few times when I had my early 80s mullet (which had gone by the time of Live Aid, so it had stopped by then, thank god) and Jim Reid (and a couple of times Ian McCulloch. The pop star one) when I had messy but non-mulletted hair.

My favourite ever lookalike though was circa 1991 when I was in my local pub and getting stared at by a not-unattractive female at the other side of the room. Eventually she came across to speak to me. And what she said was: "I've got to tell you this. You look exactly like the girl who sang on that Colour Field single." That'll be Thinking Of You then. From six years earlier. Can't really see it myself but I've been called much worse. Sadly the woman concerned wasn't particularly interested in copping off with a minor pop star lookalike from the previous decade.

Great single though. But needless to say I never wore that off-white top and skirt combo to The Lescar again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnkZdjW66ls

And going from the quite good to the shit, in the early part of the century I was on a press trip and one of the other journos said to me: "You really remind me of someone famous."

I replied: "Yeah, I know, Chris Evans.I get that all the time." She replied: "No. Dennis Pennis." There wasn't a lot I could say to that so I didn't. And she then went: "It's okay, I like ugly men." Er thanks. The ironic thing is she was also a ginge and told me she once got tied to a tree at school for it. They should have bloody left her there.

People always used to say my sister's second husband looked like Kenny Everett. I really couldn't see it myself. The first though definitely looked like a young Alvin Stardust.

Bit of humblebragging going on in this thread. A few borderline handsome people.

I've got the proper stuff:

Samwise Gamgee
Ed Sheeran
Frank of Ireland, that's the latest. I don't even have a beard.

Yeah, people love to use these sorts of threads to surreptitiously preen. 'Boohoo a stranger said I look like Brad Pitt'.

For me it's been Pattinson, Jude Law. Nasty bullying stuff really I don't like to think about it. To keep it musical, also drum kid from Love Actually.

On the "Ah jesus this is depressing" front, when I was 15 a friend's mum was convinced I looked like Robbie Coltrane, despite him being 39 at the time, and I've had two people absolutely convinced that I was Ricky Gervais, one of these occasions took place in a Cash Converters and the guy behind the counter refused to believe my denials. Oh yeah, and someone said I looked quite like Harold from Neighbours, which didn't make me feel that sexy.

On the "Eh, could be worse" front folks on here have suggested Robert Fripp and Dan Ackroyd, which I've no issue with, and is why those posters are alive to this day.

When i was in my late teens, I and three friends went to Majorca. I know what you're thinking here, but there was none of that nonsense going on. We were the anti-Inbetweeners. I genuinely don't think any of us even spoke to a female out there.

The oldest of us - a stately 23 - hired a car and one day we went out to a small village. We were dossing around the square and some girls - probably about 12 or 13 - spotted us. They were all staring at us and pointing us out and running off to get other friends to stare and point at us. We were the centre of attention for a few minutes though. We didn't try to speak to them (of course) and they seemed not to speak any English so we just continued dossing around, while also aware we were being looked at. As media celebrities always do.

I haven't a clue if they thought we were a band or indeed which band. One of my mates on that trip was the often-aforementioned Andrew Ridgeley lookalike but none of the rest of us looked like George Michael. But I'd like to think that they thought we were pop stars. Although I'm probably flattering myself and they were just surprised to see strangers in the village. I'll never know now.

I got sick of being called John Lennon back in the 70's because I had slightly long hair and wore National Health glasses. So I got a pair with thick black frames and cut my hair and every time I went to the pub at least one person would call me Elvis (Costello, not Parsley).
Other than the glasses, I bore/bear no resemblance to either. But it did make me think that my level of face-blindness was normal.

I was mistaken for the guitar player out of the Rakes when I was younger. These days I get “Danny from The West Wing” (twice, from two separate people).

Ha, my best mate got the whole John Lennon (with long hair) and then Elvis Costello (when he cut it) just for wearing glasses and having a bit of a beard. Didn’t help either that he had a widows peak at about 22.

I had my hand up at a John Waters Q&A and only realised it was me he was repeatedly addressing as 'Johnnie Ray' when he called me 'Mute Johnnie Ray' and moved onto another person. I had a really good question too. Poor old Johnnie Ray.

I’ve been told I look like Brett Anderson, which is not a bad thing but I take to mean a bit hang dog and weather beaten.
But it’s also annoying as it means I could have looked like Brett Anderson when I was a shy, awkward, uncool twat.

But I’ve also been told I look like Vic Reeves, Stuart Staples, Louis Theroux and little chef from Big Chef Little Chef.

I tended to know it was time for a hair cut when the comparisons move from Stephen Merchant to Jarvis Cocker.

Both incorrect, I actually look like Manfred Mann, but only the old boys in the pub had access to that cultural touchpoint.
