Why don't people get "gunged" on TV anymore?
« on: May 04, 2021, 05:43:38 PM »
In the nineties, celebrities and members of the Great British Public were regularly ushered into "gunge machines" before being doused in bright-coloured goo for our amusement. Not just kids TV either, this was regularly used to liven up evening gameshows and charity fundraisers. I loved it. You loved it. Your nan loved it. A solid fixture of TV, especially during prime time. When, and more importantly, why, did it stop?

same with plate spinning. There was always a plate spinner on tv back in the day.

Good luck finding one today, even on one of those shitty ITV talent shows with david walliams

Can't be a major health and safety thing as it's still a regular feature of CBBC show Saturday Mash-Up. Viewers vote for one of two celebrity guests to get gunged/slimed at the end of the programme. Cheap way of getting kids to watch to the end of a 3-hour show.

Do people get gunged on Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway? That's the natural heir to Noel's House Party, but does it supply the slime?

Had a great post about the infamous pulled House Party episode - last gunging on mainstream tv (got a bootlegged VHS). But server went down as i pressed post (Noel monitoring?)

Cut a long story short. Teenage girl asphyxiated in gunge tank. Audience and Noel braying for 7 minutes before Bobby Davro forces door open. Rusty Lee fails to resuscitate. Episode pulled. Copies burned but a tape leaks out and distributed on the underground snuff market. I got a copy after clearing out a dead perv’s apartment.

There's a particular subgenre of pornography called 'Wet and Messy Fetishism' where pretty ladies get gunged for the sake of masturbators.

There wasn't any gunging on Neol's HQ, was there? He should have been gunging those district councillors and their press officers that he was up in arms about all the time for not letting a soldier build a bungalow extension or whatever it was. Keep gunging them until they submit to his whims. Same with Lloyds Bank, get 'em gunged. Should have gunged Terry Wogan that time when he brought up the death of Michael Lush. What's that, Channel Four? You've axed Deal Or No Deal? Meet my gunge! It just shows the remarkable restraint of the man, really.

The iconic green slime of the Canadian television series You Can't Do That on Television was developed by accident, according to producer Roger Price - the original idea had been to dump a barrel of food leftovers on a young boy chained in a dungeon, but before it could be used, the contents of the barrel had turned green with mold. The noxious mixture was dumped on the young boy anyway, and overnight the series had its trademark gag.[2] The show subsequently went through several different slime recipes incorporating ingredients such as lime gelatin dessert powder, flour, oatmeal or Cream of Wheat, baby shampoo, and even cottage cheese (not all necessarily at the same time)[citation needed].

I feel like a lot of Noel's stuff while it wasn't exactly novel it had a load of intricate quirkiness that made it uniquely mad in a very Noel way. By comparison I think things like Saturday Night takeaway don't have that and if anything are a spiritual successor to things like Barrymore and other variety shows.

There's something a bit naff about gungeing now isn't there? A bit quaint. I guess it's just not cruel or humiliating enough for these times. Viewers these days want to see celebrities forced to eat grubs or Simon Cowell crushing young people's dreams.

Because criminally nobody has gave Dave Benson Phillips a TV job in years. He was touring it round student unions for a while. People queuing up to be gunged. Loads of videos on YT of Holly Willoughby being gunged. Surely Keith Lemon has been gunging people on that Celebrity Juice?
