Interesting Videogame Contrarians

Who's currently producing good takes and explaining them well? I'm talking specifically about long form videos or articles with genuinely interesting insights?

There's nothing I enjoy more than reading why something I thought was good is actually shit. Genuinely. It's very frustrating when someone comes up with some trolling take lie "Dark Souls is shit actually" and just doesn't expand.

Joseph Anderson is one of my favourite long-formers, although he's not done anything 'recently' after his Witcher trilogy project spiraled out of control (the first was over 4 hrs, and the second went over 5, he's been working on the 3rd for over a year now on and off with lengthy breaks to focus on Twitch streaming/family business etc. For a sample, he's already said a section of the Wild Hunt video will be dedicated to how the side-quests in that game are only average, so yeah.

Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/JosephAndersonChannel/videos
Witcher 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtrAx-rVgco
Mario Odyssey (It's no Masterpiece) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYJx5xt2cB0
The Witness (A Great Game that you shouldn't play) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZokQov_aH0&

I also rate him as a streamer and have seen all of his Danganronpa LPs, Outer Wilds, Undertale etc. Just a very engaging player who's very smart but absolutely willing to stick to his stubborn guns about being critical of things, especially story-telling etc, and never afraid to ruffle many feathers in chat.

The best long-form reviewer is obviously Tim Rogers, but his Action Button series only tends to focus on things he liked, so not as relevant here.

I found this essay fairly electrifying when I first read it, though I've forgotten most of it now: http://tevisthompson.com/on-videogame-reviews/

Starts off bashing Bioshock Infinite, but it's really about the dreadful state of game criticism generally.

Thursday

Madhair and Andi Hamilton on the Arseholevania podcast.

Surely everyone knows about Zero Punctuation, and his complaining about Spunk Gargle Wee Wee Shooter game and Jimminy Cockthroat Sandboxes.
Also created the term "PC Master Race" which is now used by the idiots he makes fun of

James Stephanie Sterling?

Best takes in the business, and funny with it. Not sure if you'd call them a contrarian, though. They can be, definitely, but it's more that they don't take the same lines as the mainstream games media. Always digs their heels in when people, fans, developers try to fight them. And often on the wind up. I love them.

I find Sterling so, so irritating but I wouldn't want them any other way and am delighted that they exist
