It's just crazy. Won't even bring back telling people they must wear masks in indoor spaces. Utterly shamelessly leading the country into the meat grinder again cheared online by a load of wealthy grifters who can easily afford to go private.

Javid is to embarrassed to face doctors it seems after the bullshit he spouted at the press conference.

Health secretary
@sajidjavid
has pulled out of speaking to GPs at their annual conference this morning, on the day the Govt and NHS publish its GP 'rescue plan'

Nearly 200 people dying a day after getting COVID and they won't even go back to the restrictions we had in May and June.

The Culture Bunker

I'm fairly confident we won't see any measures brought back in - they've got people going back into work spending money on the commute and stuff while in city centres. People have pubs, gigs, sporting events back - so enough will be reluctant to lose that again. Add in paranoia of another lost Christmas and we'll plough through whatever numbers come out of it.

Alberon

I think they will, but, as usual, they'll wait until far too late to implement anything. The NHS is at the point of collapse now.

Fambo Number Mive

I predict a two week firebreak lockdown at the beginning of December to "save Christmas".

Tory MPs still not wearing facemasks in the House of Commons in order to discourage other people from wearing facemasks in indoor spaces.

If the Tories changed their name to the "Killing Off The Public Party" 40% of this fucking stupid country would still vote for it, and that's enough to win power for the next decade at least.

Not sure - such a thing would cause a bit of panic from fear of exactly that, another 'cancelled Christmas', happening. There may be a level where measures are (very) reluctantly taken, but it'll be a higher bar than any point we've seen before.

They might be banking on half-term cutting the trend a bit, maybe?

Friday at 9, on BBC One.

I think they'll try and ride it out, but we're about to see the folly of putting economy before safety; you can't have a functioning economy when all the workers and consumers are sick, afraid and mourning.

Surely it will be 2nd week of January, after the sales and when people are skint. Boris saved Christmas and we can still get some cheap clothes from NEXT at 6am.

I'm going for a month-long school closure over Christmas. Finish a week early and return a week late.

157 deaths a day are 'mercifully low' apparently. So by that logic we should be glad that a mercifully low 1 tory mp was stabbed this year. Phew!

We are once again an international laughing stock

QuoteItalian Prime Minister Mario Draghi singled out the U.K.'s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic as a great example -- of what not to do.

The former European Central Bank president said the British approach, which involved a sudden lifting of restrictions on a July 19 "Freedom Day," shows the need for nations to slowly reopen.

"The U.K., one of the countries that conducted its vaccination campaign with great speed, after abandoning all caution, today has around 50,000 daily new cases and 200 dead yesterday," Draghi said Wednesday, addressing Italy's lower house of Parliament.

"The exit will need to be gradual," said Draghi, who is guiding his country through a reopening in stages...

I agree with Draghi - although I'd say that the English approach is by far the worst., and the other three countries are being somewhat more sensible

QuoteAsked on BBC Breakfast whether Tory MPs should cover their faces during debates, Mr Argar replied: "There's clearly a leadership role for members of Parliament on all sides.

"We always need to think about our actions, or words, and the implications they have.

"But I think it's for those individual members of Parliament to read the guidance, consider it, bear in mind what Sajid [Javid] has said, and reach their own views".

He added: "There will be times when I've done it, there will be times when I didn't, and I sat down [and] didn't put it back on."

This man is a health minister.

Meanwhile the new vaccines minister is not in the Cabinet.

weaseldust

tories are too cowardly to make any big changes out of the blue but i think yesterday's announcement was to mentally prepare people for more restrictions coming back in probably about two weeks. i'm pretty sure they've done something like this a couple weeks before every big announcement

and it gives them a way to shift blame to the general public, warning people to take action or else they'll have to bring in more restrictions. it's pathetic and abhorrent but they're trying to stay popular throughout all this

They dont even have to work that hard here, if they just blame university students for going to nightclubs the media can run with some shots of clubs in central London and pretty much every potential tory voter will lap it up.

Tories still trying to discourage other from wearing masks:

QuoteTory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg says a "convivial fraternal spirit" means the Conservatives do not need to wear masks in the Commons.

The Commons leader said those on government benches knew each other, and teased Pete Wishart that he may not want to mix with SNP MPs who sat with him in the Commons.

Absolutely shameful.

Press release from the BMA yesterday:

Quote

Responding to the press conference given by Health Secretary Sajid Javid today in which he said that the number of Covid cases are expected to rise to 100,000 a day and that the Westminster Government would not be implementing its 'Plan B' at this stage, BMA council chair Dr Chaand Nagpaul said:

"The Westminster Government said it would enact 'Plan B' to prevent the NHS from being overwhelmed; as doctors working on the frontline, we can categorically say that time is now.

"By the Health Secretary's own admission we could soon see 100,000 cases a day and we now have the same number of weekly Covid deaths as we had during March, when the country was in lockdown. It is therefore incredibly concerning that he is not willing to take immediate action to save lives and to protect the NHS. Especially as we head into winter, when the NHS is in the grips of tackling the largest backlog of care, with an already depleted and exhausted workforce.

"The Government has taken its foot off the brake, giving the impression that the pandemic is behind us and that life has returned to normal. The reality today is an unacceptable rate of infections, hospitalisations and deaths, unheard of in similar European nations. In comparison to France, we have more than 10 times the number of cases and almost four times as many deaths per million.

"It is wilfully negligent of the Westminster Government not to be taking any further action to reduce the spread of infection, such as mandatory mask wearing, physical distancing and ventilation requirements in high-risk settings, particularly indoor crowded spaces. These are measures that are the norm in many other nations.

"While new treatments are always welcome, the UK Government itself has said these will not be available to patients until at least the end of the year, but urgent action is needed now to stem the scale of suffering and the real risk of overwhelming the NHS.

"It's vital that the Government does everything to ensure it is made as simple and easy as possible for people to receive their booster, or even their first and second jab, especially in groups where uptake is lower. However, relying on the vaccination programme alone without other measures will not be sufficient to prevent rising infection rates, illness and deaths, given that no vaccine is 100% effective.

"Only last week two select committees found the UK was an international outlier when it came to public health policy during this crisis. We are rapidly approaching a position where, yet again, the Government is delaying for too long, and equivocating over taking action. This is the time to learn the lessons of the past and act fast, or else we will face far more extreme measures later."

What do doctors know anyway?

It's the same old dance again - leave any restrictions until it's too late so they have to be more severe.

mothman

I have to go to London overnight for meetings etc. next month, and I'm a bit worried about it. I know all the offices I visit will be taking precautions, but I can't help worry. Plan to avoid the Tube as much as possible - I'll be with others so can probably justify putting cab fares on expenses.

QuoteFace masks should not become a "sign of virtue", a government minister has said as she and her Conservative colleagues come under pressure to lead by example and wear them in the House of Commons.

Fambo Number Mive

It's the minister for care saying this as well, which makes it even more concerning

QuoteIt's about personal choice, we're not the sort of country that tells you what to wear.

We tell people to wear motorcycle helmets when riding motorbikes and seatbelts when in cars, why can't we tell people to wear masks (unless medically exempt) indoors during a pandemic?

Because Graham Brady will put the wheels in motion to get rid of Boris Johnson.

And Boris Johnson wants to keep his job more than he wants you and your loved ones to stay alive and healthy, so here we are.

They're still mandated in shops, etc, in Wales but an awful lot of people seem to have contracted medical exemptions since the last lockdown.

Check out these dunces, who were protesting at a road junction near a hotel and a petrol station in the outskirts of Dublin this afternoon.

In case it's not clear, the numbers on the sign are a fabricated death toll from the vaccine.

Fambo Number Mive

Only 18.9% of 12 to 15 year olds in England have had a first jab. No doubt antivaxxers are scaring some of them away. Wales and Scotland are doing better though, I think Scotland is at 50%.
