Nowhere Man

I didn't know whether to post in my old thread or in that recent one about Dennis, but figured it made more sense just to start a new thread. The highly anticipated sessions release of their Sunflower-Surf's Up period has been highly anticipated for yonks. But it's finally on it's way!! (fuck yes)

As a taster, yesterday they dropped this sizzling early version of 'Big Sur' on Spotify and YouTube, a rendition so fucking lovely that it (well, partially) redeems Mike Love of being music's biggest berk!

These boxsets are nuts, absolutely rammed with brilliant and fascinating nuggets. Lovely stuff

Goldentony

only have to delete those 1993/1988 live versions and it's good to go

It's great, isn't it?

Brundle-Fly

Probably will purchase but it's Too much. The Binge Boys.

purlieu

I seem to be absolutely cursed with liking bands who refuse to release these kinds of boxset. I enjoy Pet Sounds and Smile, but otherwise never really got into the Beach Boys, but this is the kind of release I'd absolutely love to see from bands I love. Jealous of Beach Boys fans for the fascinating stuff incoming.

Custard

Maybe give Sunflower a try if you haven't purlieu. Hardly a duffer on it in my opinion, and it's a lovely, sun-drenched woozy little record

Love You I have a real soft spot for, too. Another "Brian's back" record, but one that actually works from start to finish. Is fun, and also rammed with absolute tunes

I was at my local record shop buying Sunflower on the day that it was released.  It was my first ever album purchase.  And in just a few weeks time I shall be able to re-experience the joy of that long-passed (but never forgotten) moment.

You cannot even begin to imagine how much happiness this pending release is giving me.

Goldentony

if you buy Love You listen to it, it's great and all that but that Love Is A Woman tune, and the "pat her on her butt" - just skip, get something sharp and wreck the groove with that one on

Oh hang on I think you've got 2 tunes mixed up there. The pat her on her butt tune is "I wanna pick you up" and I think is a very sweet and innocent song.

Goldentony

it's grand until pat her on her butt, what's he doing there!

rest of the album is amazin though, even DING DONG

He's rocking the baby to sleep and patting her gently in the process, as you do.

I'm delighted this box set is out but know from past experience that I'd only play it once, then maybe just do a highlights CD of six or seven bonus tracks that I'd want to keep playing.

Goldentony

I think the issue is when they say it I just see a big awful auld arse there, like a big auld dirty mans arse or something

Ant Farm Keyboard

How about reissuing the 1972 Spring album, the one with Marilyn Wilson and her sister, both from The Honeys?
It's been last released in 1998, and it is produced by Brian, unencumbered from the whole Beach Boys machine, with a lot of Beach Boys covers rearranged. Not as polished as the Honeys material, but less insane than The Beach Boys Love You.

PaulTMA

It's here and I think it is the greatest box set of all time.  I love it.

daf

Is it available again in the UK? I got my Amazon order cancelled a few weeks ago.

. . .

(Just checked, and it's "available in 1-3 weeks" and now around £30 more expensive than my original order - Bastards!)

Neomod

Been listening to this today. Gorgeous uplifting stuff after a shitty week.

daf

Just dropped by a tenner - order in!

The 2CD version also looks tempting - nothing unique on there (besides some shorter edits), but they gather all the main songs together - making a sort of fantasy quadruple album.

The Sunflower / Surf's Up twofer CD kicked off my Beach Boys obsession about 20 years ago so am eager to get hold of this. Unfortunately I'll be wanting the most expensive version (5cd)

Same here. A workmate had A day in the life of a tree on when I came back from my dinnertime pint. To my shame I ripped the piss at first but by 5 o'clock I was straight down to music zone.

I went through about half of the box set last night, it's fantastic. The tracks and backing vocals, wonderful. Like being the lead singer who only knows half the words

SteveDave

Try as I might, I just cannot get on with "Sunflower" It's too wet. Bruce's limp dick draped over everything.
