the joke is that Mondale doesn't know where the beef is despite the fact that his name contains the word "dale" which is a place where cattle would often graze, cows being the basis for the meat of "beef" - it's a wordplay that isn't easy to catch on first viewing. I don't know what the "mon" part means though

A 'dale'?! What?!

"Homer, Mindy, you've just won a romance dinner alone at Madam Chaos, the sexiest restraunt in Captial City!".

"Is there anyway to get out of this?"

"No".

It's the sudden shift to aggression that does it for me.

One of the best episodes in the series, Oh Margey you came and you found me a Turkey on my Vacation away from Worky.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

"What happened to Mindy?"

"Yes, what did happen to her?"

"She hit the bottle pretty bad and lost her job."

"Hm. Good."

and in the same episode

"Thank goodness I drove down that ironic-looking street! I made the right decision to stay with my Homie, and there was no harm done."

Homer looks devastated.

Kankurette

"Joe's Crematorium! You kill 'em, we grill 'em!"

^ That's got a really great throwaway cut scene bit that comes afterwards, Homer's imaginary amusement park made up of old shite.

Milhouse: It smelly funny in there.

Homer: No it doesn't!

Which episode is this? Thought I'd rewatched the good stuff loads but don't remember this scene.

The Mollusk

Oops! My bad, it's S5 E7, "Bart's Inner Child".

Edit: can't remember if I got the episode wrong to begin with actually, fuck knows

"No."

Reminds me of

"Mr Gumble, you're upsetting me"

"No I'm not"

From Season 11 though.

What is the joke again? Isn't just that Lisa doesn't get the reference?

I've never got it - is it just that the local newspaper is way out of date, running a story rellted to (at a guess) the 1980 democrat primaries? I can't remeber the context...

Pffft. Don't be ridiculous. It was the 1984 democrat primaries.

the episode explicitly shows the 1984 olympics too, so the joke is the kids don't have a clue what it's about, but Homer is so easily pleased by the catchphrase he credits it with Mondale's victory in his home state in the election against Reagan (the only state he won in a landslide defeat).

Yes Lisa should be 37 now.

The way that episodes shows a decades political events as only secondary contexts for pop culture ephemera is one of the most prescient things ever broadcast.

Our headteacher would become apoplectic with rage if he could hear people dropping their hymn books in assembly rather than placing them on the ground. Which of course was a weekly occurrence.

Bet he's the kind of guy who got kids going on their lawn just to make him kick off because someone did it once to retrieve a ball or something and they went fucking apeshit.
