kinda like them horrid character designs out of that movie foodfight

Oh, that's that shitty TERF artist, isn't it?

Re the queer thread: I'm not sure if I count as queer. I'm bisexual but I don't identify as queer personally because queerness comes with a whole load of baggage and expectations. I'm too boring to be queer, for fuck's sake.

Yeah the ugliness of the terfs was definitely something that made me committed to and educated on trans rights.

In my mind, it all kicked off on my internet at around the time that Johnson defeated Jezza; before then I was always arguing about Labour antisemitism. I've also noticed a lot of terfy people have been loudly proclaiming their solidarity with Israel since it all kicked off over there again. Definitely a big overlap between terfs and pro-Israeli-apartheid folk. Even thinking about your favourite terfy columnists. Funny how there's a correlation.

Indeed, noted terf and danger to women Alexrubner got booted off Twitter permanently a day or two ago for calling a pro-Palestine American Jew a cunt.
Same (about trans rights, not Corbyn, although I've always been pro-trans rights). Also, why are they pro-Israel? Because Orthodox Jews don't like trans people or something? I thought Israel was supposed to be the LGBT haven of the Middle East?

Poirots BigGarlickyCorpse

"men cannot change into women" well obviously they can, and vice versa, so fuck off TERFs

mmm. i mean, bisexual identity is a queer identity for certain. it is a word with a lot of baggage tho and there can be disparity in the community especially when it comes to those who might have historically and personally negative connotations.

the thing you sad about being too 'boring'; i see it often that queerness is treated as something you have to be actively engaged in, rather than something you just are by virtue of being it. that's why you get a lot of the spiel of 'being x doesn't make you not queer enough' etc

if you're lgbt you're included in queerness (if you want to be)

Fuck knows, seeing as the likes of Bindel are happy to engage in far right antisemitic conspiracy theories involving George Soros.

damien

That dreadful Mr Menmo (he of the long hair and dreadful Terf poetry from a few pages ago) has also been booted off Twitter today. There's a definite vibe in the air that this is a really hollow victory; the BBC coverage has gone down very badly with the Terven. I hope this all just  shines a light on what a bunch of miserable old cranks they are.

Barry Admin

Bindel does actually seem to believe this is all about women's rights, unlike a lot of the terfs, and routinely moans about the involvement of the right wing. So props to her for that, at least.

As I mentioned recently, she REALLY didn't like Staniland having a laugh about the idea that the Christian right may start "pouring money in" to fuck over LGBT charities: https://www.cookdandbombd.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,85730.msg4573080.html#msg4573080

She did end up slightly climbing down from that, though, after the glincels told her off and pretended that penis lady was just joking about.

Edit: here's the original post, I did find some of her replies funny:

You mean this hasn't made Graham truly happy?!?

Graham is the only one among him and his only two friends who doesn't own a proper wine glass of course

Bindel has done some good work re sex trafficking, which is more than most of those TERF twats have, and she's one of the few big name feminists who has spoken publicly about Pakistani rape gangs. So at least she is interested in other causes. And I'm glad she's telling the conservative Christians to get off her side. At least she knows they have ulterior motives. Shame she's so awful about trans people.

Goblin, that's why I don't call myself queer (that and I associate the word with bullying, it's what nasty little bullies called me at school even before I knew I was bi). Like you get people saying gay men who are married can't be queer, gay marriage isn't queer, gay men who go to Pride and wear suits and/or look very clean-cut aren't queer, and there's the expectation that you should be polyamorous or an anarchist or dye your hair bright colours or whatever, and arguments that being queer is solely about disruption. I honestly don't see my sexuality as a political statement. It's just who I am. I still post in the queer/trans solidarity thread though.

Any visitor has to drink out of a detergent jug.

I understand that people are anxious about how transphobia appears to be on the rise, but we have had a right-wing government for ten years. Things will hopefully revert if the left ever gets any power, and are even more likely to revert when a bunch of old people die and a bunch of young people start voting.

totally hear you. honestly i don't vibe with people that take such unnecessarily militant stances towards this. it's so fucking tiresome and it comes more like self-conscious point scoring and endless rules

fuck that

Dr Rock

Yeah it's a shame Bindel is a TERF because she is a proper feminist, and one that cares more about the women at the bottom much more than those at the top. And I don't think she goes round harassing individual trans people on Twitter and stuff like that.

I mean, lots of "proper" feminists are TERFs. The acronym exists for a reason.

Kankurette

Germaine Greer as well, which does my head in because she was Babby's First Feminist for me.

Dr Rock

Yeah but she lost her marbles age ago

Yeah. I suppose I mean she's done actual work all her life to help women, not just spouted off on Mumsnet. Also she was nearly killed by Peter Sutcliffe.

My first exposure to feminism would have been Adrian Mole reading The Female Eunuch 😂 I fucking loved those books - and the show, and the puter game! - and can very clearly remember how many times Mole references it. Think he thought/hoped it was porn or something lmao.

God tho, yeah. I rewatched Contrapoints' video on terfism recently and it really is one of the best things she's ever done - extremely comprehensive and engaging. Here it is for anyone who hasn't seen it: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1pTPuoGjQsI&vl=en

...The Germaine Greer quotes included therein, tho... Oh blimey. It really does underline the visceral reaction so many bigots have to trans women in a very effective and bleak way.

Poirots BigGarlickyCorpse

I think I'll watch that video again.

God I love Contrapoints. She is so empathetic to people who don't deserve it.

GoblinAhFuckScary

had a peek at the mumsnets for the first time in yonks and obviously on the top trending threads is about parents losing the respect of their children

find it genuinely upsetting that these pricks pick fights with their own children and deprive themselves of connections with them over a fucking culture war. scum

also there's a thread seriously suggesting gender fascists are a persecuted people identity a la black people/jewish people/travellers

Quote from: scumThe Equality Act applies across many different areas, not just employment law. Service providers, unions, political parties – all have to comply.

Let's have a list of the ways in which gender critical women have been treated that are now unlawful. I'll go first:

- Venue owners who cancel bookings from gender critical groups are now legally the same as Pontins when they cancelled a load of bookings from presumed Travellers.

- The Labour CLPs that threw out women for having gender critical views are now legally the same as the Labour CLPs that refused to process applications from Jewish people.

- Cafes that display signs saying "No TERFS" are now legally the same as cafes that display signs saying "No blacks, dogs or Irish".

Barry Admin

Worth it, Poirot.

I'm gonna have to read all the Adrian Mole books again I think, even though I did so in hospital a few years back. This is fucking brilliant:

Quote from: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/apr/11/5-political-lessons-learned-from-sue-townsends-adrian-mole-books2) The Female Eunuch is a very powerful book
Adrian's mother, Pauline, becomes a 'new woman' after reading Germaine Greer's seminal text: "My mother has gone to a woman's workshop on assertiveness training... my mother came home and started bossing us around."

She also took part in the anti-nuclear peace camps around Greenham Common, or, as Adrian obliviously wrote, "my mother has gone out with Mrs Singh, Mrs O'Leary and her women's group to have a picnic on Greenham Common."

JamesTC

I'd like to think that transphobic views aren't on the rise but rather people just feel more emboldened to express transphobic views. Same with racism, sexism and homophobia.

Poirots BigGarlickyCorpse

Goblin, seriously, stop looking at Mumsnet. It's a cabal of white, privileged wine-moms who have such a terminal case of "Not my Nigel!" that they sincerely believe the biggest threat to women's safety is a trans woman having a piss in the stall next to them.

I'm very VERY guilty of reading this thread and creating unappreciated 'shops about its main character, but I never look at his sadstack. It only enrages me and puts me in a bad mood. Don't do that to yourself babe. It's a lovely day. Treat yourself to an ice-cream.

The second two are examples of things that have never happened/don't happen now. Do they all just lap this shit up?

Bigoted views are not protected characteristics.

This isn't entirely accurate, but it's certainly the case that this is what you'll overwhelmingly be exposed to in certain parts of it.

(That the transphobic posters are the most prolific, certainly in terms of topic generation, in those subforums is part of the reason why they look so completely captured. I think it's quite sad thing is that there remains a non-trivial undercurrent of discussion of actual issues, that's buried under so much cack.)

Bizarre how they think being GC is comparable to being a race or a sexual orientation, rather than comparable to being a racist or sexist. It's a key aspect of half their arguments, really, "this person called me - a natal woman, and therefore oppressed - 'cis', and I called them an AGP fetishist pervert, and it's ME who is the intolerant one? Because someone slamming a GC person is exactly the same as someone slamming a trans person for being trans - in fact, it's worse, because I am a natal woman. Also #cisisaslur."
