Speaking of our species? Absolutely. Do I think it's a recent change? Nah. I think we're closer to a greater (and avoidable) environmental/social catastrophe double decker shit sandwich than we've been historically but I don't necessarily think the overall stupidity or suffering of our species has been reduced. It sounds like defeatist mentality but I do think we've always been, as a species, this fucked. You don't need to go too far back to see the Victorians actively rewriting their antique history to be worse and try and make their era seem less awful.

I think, grandly speaking, the average quality of life in the Western world and a lot of the East is far better than it was but obviously it still has a ways to go, and we're on the precipice of that baseline QOL going downhill right fucking fast.
