Author Topic: The Media in the UK are ushering in a new Nationalism of their own accord  (Read 1927 times)

Lazily turned on the TV this morning.

BBC: (outgoing host) Louise Minchin pushing serial con-man Robert Jenrick MP on whether students taking down a portrait of Queen Lisibet from their student union was wrong. The emphasis was 'of course its fucking wrong, the University should be privatised'. To be fair to Jenrick (only this once), he replied that it was merely 'student politics' and he wasn't getting involved. But he also caveated that for the skinhead viewers that he is proud to have a portrait of the Queen in his department offices and something about the students being 'ignorant'. Minchin tried a Paxman to get him to condemn, quoting schoolboy in a nettle bush Gavin Williamson, who has condemned it.

Switch on to ITV: Mullet-Wife Penny Lancaster is talking about joining the special constabulary and imploring hero worship of the police (a widowed coppers wife has started a campaign and is urging Priti Patel to continue to back the campaign, calling for tougher action on those who commit a crime against the police). Lancaster is rabid, goggle eyed in her fervour for the police. She then tells an emotional lie about stepping in to help a depressed person on a bridge (ok, it may be true, but the tone suggested 'black man in Torquay' tale). Lazarus of Lanzarote Richard Madeley (the closest thing GMB could find to replace Piers Morgan) and Susanna Reid happily going along with the support of the two Aryan women, portraying police as victims of nefarious criminals intent on bashing bobby on the beat.

------

Now, my porcine gut is telling me that these editorial lines in media are increasing (once more - its what caused me to become a cynic back in 1990/91). However, this time it feels like there are no shadowy conspirators pulling the strings of the media to tack them to the right, to elicit fervent nationalistic pride and rampant disdain or hatred for the 'other', be it minorities or progressive politics. They are willingly stoking the flames, not for viewers or clicks, but because they see this as THE RIGHT THING TO DO. The White Knights of common British decency. There is no room for dissent or an opposing viewpoint, because there is no need.

Personally, those who wished to see a fairer, equal society (tough in of itself, given human nature), find themselves once more marginalised. However, this time, there is a new danger - we risk having our snouts stamped metaphorically or physically stamped to the kerb.

The driver is the lingering British imperialistic muscle-memory, the wilful ignorance and laziness of a majority, controlled and amplified by a media that leans into hysteria rather than is tempered by a regulatory hysteresis.

On a side note, Bastani did a nice piece on why the media can't tell the truth on Middle East politics, which chimes with my thoughts on this homegrown pseudo-nationalism.

If England wasn't so right wing surely the monarchy and the Tories would have been binned by now.

You may have missed (slimy dead-eyed corrupt peice of shit) Jenrick on GMB shortly after, where Reid similarly was pushing him to have some strident, angry reaction to this portrait coming down. With Madeley chiming in to air his utter horror that anyone would equate THE QUEEN with COLONIALISM. Seeming to imply that she alone single handedly ended the empire out of the goodness of her heart. When he refused to rise to the bait Reid was incredibly flustered and completely biffed a segue into Cornwalls lack of funding post brexit.

The media in this country genuinely makes me sick.

Can't really comment cos I don't consume much, if any, British media.  I look at the BBC News website whenever I feel my powers are diminishing and it soon reminds me of why it's better to live outside of Mordor.  Can only contribute that I watched an old episode of Gardener's World on Youtube the other day, it included an extended section on (googles name) Kate Garraway's garden.  An extremely boring garden, without interesting plants or design or any saving grace, save it is the garden of Kate Garraway (who has similar qualities).  Boring as fuck, nothing relevant to gardening and seemed to be purely a vehicle for her to wring her onion out about her nasty husband who is stricken with Covid.  I don't wish anyone to be struck down but WTFF?  Gardener's Fucking World? Come on.

On the Queen shite, never noticed it much when I was in Britain but, from the outside, there does seem to be a lot of interest.  I mean, even CaB, seems to have a lot of threads, never read them because I'm as interested in the Royals as I am in collecting plastic figures of something I've never heard of, but we do have them a lot.  Strange really.

My hope is that these are last desperate twitches of the immune system of the British Empire. A final sputtering of ancient antibodies against modernity, spewed out in the form of posh journalists and MPs raging about cancel culture, free broadband, and Meghan Markle.

I foresee psychological crises once the Queen dies. Piers Morgan, appearing nude and smeared on GB News, will condemn death itself for cancelling Elizabeth II ahead of her time.

sadly we're entering the hyperEnglish phase that Ulster Protestants have been in for 50 years. Marches, pomp, oppression, and hurt bleating to become de rigeur.

Garraway's husband nearly died of COVID, you monster! She fought tirelessly to hold back her crocodile tears on a regular basis as concerned Piers and Susanna cooed her for hot gossip on her poor husband Derek. He recovered and she dried that last tear before screeching in her Loose Woman way at some poor ethnic being lambasted by officials.

There is no more 'royalism' than there has been before, CaB would have you believe you can't walk outside for tripping over a rope winching up the Union Jack.

Must say, I do find the squee mateyness of Brit MSM utterly rebarbative.  Somehow worse than even the American version, not sure why but it's disturbing and, IMO, feeds directly into that feeling of living in the Return of the Bodysnatchers.  I mean, that fucking Johnson wedding, just seen a pic, like, sooo glasto when we all know they'd both have us down the salt mines eating our own children, sign on the dotted line to send another consignment of napalm to the ME, literally turn a blind eye whilst thousands and thousands, millions, maybe, die needlessly on their watch, if it suited them.  Very dark.  Very empty.

Garraway's new book "VID-Fucked To Buggery: My Struggles With Fondant Derek" is available in all good bookshops now. You just 'ave to looook fer it.

Students in a common room taking down a photograph put up by students who have now graduating splashing over the front pages is the most ridiculous this has got.

All started with drink-driving expert Paul Staines of course.

It feels like the more time I spend engaging with news/current affairs/ topical media, the more I feel my mind start to go. Its like being partnered to an emotionally abusive person, they're trying to constantly gaslight us.

Wasn't this shit meant to be at least slightly informative, isn't engaging with this stuff supposed to elevate us?

it's in poor taste. i don't see why his past as a lobbyist/politico for New Labour is relevant. he nearly died from COVID and will probably never speak/move/live as before. poor guy.

his wife is a TV presenter so of course she's going to talk about it on the telly. her class of people live on the telly. it would have been stranger if she didn't talk about it. i don't think she deserves to be accused of shedding "crocodile tears" for her now permanently disabled husband.

Interesting how the shitter people's lives are made, so long as it happens gradually, the easier they subside into cheap props to help make it through the years. Flag shagging, jingoism, competitive grief/patriotism.

There’s something fundamentally wrong, as in, unhealthy to the human condition about the nature of modern work and the designed conventional existence, demands, stresses etc. Equally so the globalism that strips people of their identity. The cajoling and soft power from employers, corporations, government and media that keeps people in their boxes, unhappy but not totally mutinous.

And even better news, if the lights really do go out on the whole charade we are much more likely to choose full on fascism than socialism, huzzah!

Of course I feel sorry for anyone who has suffered due to COVID. But this was played out like a Hallmark show aired at 3pm on Sunday in Vermont. For that, I have upmost disdain.

Is the right thing to do to take that distain for meda culture and attack some bloke who's been vented tho?

Laughing at roadkill, sighting man's inhumanity to mandrill as justification, the driver avoiding the lazerbeam of your satire?

She's turned her husband's misfortune into a cynical money making opportunity so she can absolutely get fucked. She could have used her platform to campaign for sufferers of complications resulting from COVID but that goes against the establishment's (of which she is very much part) desire to open everything up ASAP and there's little money to be made from the suffering of poor people so fuck it.

Who's attacking him?  I don't see it as laughing at roadkill, I see it as feeling utterly repelled by the lifting of roadkill (only rich and privileged roadkill) up to the camera and then allowing the shot to linger on the brimming eyes, over and over and over again.  Meanwhile, little kiddies drown with their siblings trying to escape poverty and warzones or weep in cages and the breakfast gammon shrugs.

It's not satire. It's pure hatred for the obfuscation of truth.
