I've noticed that people often misuse the bümlaut

It was an optional language.  Some choose French, others German.  If they'd informed everyone at the start that they would be learning about the bümlaut I'm sure more of them would have chosen German.

I did (in fact, had to do) French, German, Spanish, Latin & Greek at school. This is a true fact.

I cannot speak any of them convincingly to any native speaker especially Latin because they're all dead.
