He looked sort of like the old Junior but I don't buy him as being a tough gangster, he looks like a dweeb.

There's a bit about that in 'Wiseguy' the book Goodfellas is based on, saying how the gangster weren't the toughest or the strongest guys in the neighbourhood, they were the ones who were the most willing to commit acts of violence without a second thought.

No, I know. There are characters like that in the present bits in The Sopranos - I mean, you wouldn't be scared of Vito, would you? But I didn't think the actor carried himself in a way that was authentic to what someone of that age in that life, who supposedly had his reputation, would actually carry themselves.

Another way of putting it is that I think he acts too much like old Junior. Junior is an old doddery man, so he's not going to be intimidating. But I felt like the young actor was cast to be a young version of old Junior, if that makes sense.

Christopher is a skinny guy and not very imposing, but he carries himself a certain way and has a bit of presence about him.

Granted, you only see him briefly, so it might be a bit unfair, but I just didn't buy him. Again, felt like the younger actor doing an impression of Junior rather than playing a real character. I would imagine that because he had relatively little to do, they did just mainly cast whoever resembled Chianese the most out of whoever came in.

Could also be down to the way those scenes were filmed - I always thought they felt a bit rushed and low budget. But again, look at the difference between Tony's father in the series and Bernthal. I think the latter has much more presence about him from the off.

I can't wait to see if Tony had the makings of a Varsity athlete

Hope Coach Molinaro is in it somewhere, as he represents what Tony possibly could have been. His appearance in The Test Dream was haunting stuff

mothman

Has Gandolfini jr. been in much else? Because as good casting a it is physically, it's taking a hell of a gamble hanging a whole movie on his resemblance to his dad. It makes more sense if he is a peripheral character. Otherwise, it'd be like actually casting Anthony Ingruber in Solo (though in hindsight given what we got there, it might not have been so bad).

Custard

I've only seen him in The Deuce. A small role, but I thought he was good with what he was given

It's deffo a gamble, so we'll see

Yeah, someone like Anthony Spilotro (who Joe Pesci's character in Casino is based on) was a tiny little man, but he was also quite happy to crush a guy's head in a vice along with murdering about 20 others in various ways.

colacentral

But Joe Pesci is still intimidating.

I mean, look at him:

That is first draft casting.

That's Vera Farmiga.

It's a prequel, they all look vera famiglia to me.

Sorry Mobius, I was completely wrong.

I'm worried that the reason I love the sopranos won't be reflected in this film. You got to know the characters so well that you could read between the lines of how they interacted with each other, how much they were suppressing / lying to each other. It really exposed something truly dark about human nature in a way that was realistic (to the extent that i think a lot of people overlooked it).

I think I said in a previous thread, but I don't think he's much of an actor. I didn't know who he was in The Deuce and couldn't understand why they had cast such a wooden actor; only later did I find out he was Gandolfini's son and was disappointed they'd seemingly cast him on that basis.

I'm sure he could portray a more vulnerable / unsure Tony Soprano based on his acting, but I would hope his screen time is relatively limited unless he's really upped his game.

I'm really struggling to see any physical resemblance between Vera Farmiga and Edie Falco.

He seems like a nice polite guy anyway, dealt with this rather annoying person really well

Jesus, that was painful to watch. Dealt with it really well, like you said.

Check out the hair on those arms too.

On the other hand the guy playing Dickie Moltisanti looks and acts exactly like a younger Richie Aprile.

No, I too at first glance thought it was Edie Falco. The more you look at her the plainer the difference is. But there's definitely something Carmelalike about the portrayal. Maybe deliberately so. Or it was a happy accident they decided to leave in.

Custard

Knowing David Chase, it'd be deliberate

Apparently he watched her as the mother in Bates Motel, and thought "there's young Livia!"

I thought there looked like digital manipulation on the shot in the trailer, like you see when people are deaged. I wonder if something's been done to manipulate her face to be closer to Edie Falco. I thought it was her at first glance too.

I thought the trailer was awful, but it looks like there could be a good film in there.

If this is 'a Sopranos story', does this mean there are going to be loads of offshoot films like they are doing with Star Wars?

Deliciousbass

Yeah it's weird, because the actress herself really doesn't look like Edie Falco. If deliberate isn't it a bit of a misstep? I thought Livia and Carmela were very different characters and never got the impression that Tony had Freud slipped his way into an Oedipal sitch.

Also I think I was overly critical above. Even if the trailer is a bit iffy, I'm still massively looking forward to this.

chveik

it's clearly Tony who is slowly turning into Livia

Must be shite to be famous.

I barely like stopping and talking to people in the street that I know, nevermind random members of the public.

mothman

This is the best thing about wearing masks right now - that nobody can recognise you, and you can pretend not to recognise anyone.[nb]This premise was shot out of the water at work the other day when somebody I've met precisely twice, but who adopted one of our kittens, recognised me with a mask on.[/nb]

I know this is about Dickie Moltisanti and heady takes on race relations in the 60s and shit but do you think we'll see Tony take on Dominic Tedesco in the Pizza World car park?

Side note, that's an incredible TV series, probably the best I've seen about the mob (and I've seen a load of them). The World at War of mafia documentaries

David Chase interview about the film. He's really pushing that it's about Dickie, not so much a Tony story
