Defecting to Xbox

Long been mostly a playstation boy, never actually owned an Xbox, although I have a decent PC anyway, but I've been alienated by what Sony are offering lately and I've now picked up a Series S with gamepass. I've heard people talk about it so long and yet for some reason the reality of what's on offer on Gamepass only just hit me and I'm very excited.

Mainly I'm impressed by the fact that it doesn't have this weird lag/delay as you move around the home screen that PS3 and PS4 has and we just have to accept for some reason.

Anyway, any suggestions for games outside of gamepass throughout the entirety of Xbox history that are on the store but were never on PC are welcome (I've long had my eyes on Lost Odyssey)

Oh and feel free to add me I guess, if that's still a thing. I'm Hooverben on there. I want to see some names other than Major Nelson.

bgmnts

The classics are all there: KOTOR, KOTOR II, Splinter Cell, New Vegas, Mass Effect, Dragon Age etc

Game Pass also qualifies you for Games With Gold, so that's another four free games every month.

Don't forget to claim them. They aren't automatically added to your account.

Gamepass is great. One thing that Xbox also offers (which Playstation doesn't) is Free Weekend, in which you can play two or three games free for the entire weekend. Games in the past that participated were FUSER, NFS and Watch Dogs.

As a Gamepass subscriber you also get goodies, such as a month free Disney Plus or the new Space Jam game for free.

Is the small amount of storage on the Xbox S a pain?

I'm tempted by the £20 a month deal but worried there isn't enough storage to download more than a couple of games to? Or does it even matter?

Any good 2d platformers on there?

BeardFaceMan

And don't forget to use the xbox rewards app and the gamepass app, you can earn enough reward points every month just by doing some searches and playing games to get the ultimate gamepass for free.

Bit of a worry, but I think this depends on what games you're playing. If you play online games that often receive updates and end up massively bloated like CoD war zone and you rotate them a lot, but I guess there's expansion drives  for that.

Console brand loyalty is mental. You can't really go wrong with either at the moment, it's whether the Sony exclusives float your boat, or the Game Pass looks tempting. Only caveat is if you want games that fall out of the Game Pass, you're probably better off with the Series X, or the PS5/Series S combo, as the disc games will be cheaper that way.

I reckon Microsoft played a real blinder with the Series S though. Hits a whole bunch of sweet spots in terms price, availability, and (semi-)next gen. Just got to hope the game pass still delivers on value, as the series S less of tantalising buy without.

It is somewhat of a pain. However, you can use external storage for most games, and it does allow you to focus a smaller sub-set games. If the download times weren't so shit, it wouldn't really be a problem.

Just get a Seagate 2TB hard drive. You'll be set.

Neomod

I'd add that you have to load bought disc games onto the HD as well. So that memory goes pretty quick.

Can you use any Seagate hard drive? Even the ones that cost about £75?

https://www.seagate.com/gb/en/consumer/play/game-drive-xbox/

Or does it have to be the Xbox one which is £220? https://www.seagate.com/gb/en/consumer/play/storage-expansion-for-xbox-series-x/

Depends. Games which are Series X/S enhanced and take advantage of the fast SSD will work only on the internal storage or expensive expansion. Others, like the majority of game pass, will run of a standard external device. And you can still store the enhanced ones on the external drive, just not run them. So you can archive them off if you want.

Malcy

Have added you. I think.

Thanks. That's good to know.

I've been thinking about getting one as well, but I'm a bit worried that Gamepass might actually be a reasonably priced way to play average games.  Like "a perfect gamepass game" has already become code for "a game you wouldn't play if it wasn't virtually free and right in front of you."

I'm sure it has a handful of absolute bangers from the current generation, too. I'm just worried it will mostly end up being a huge collection of dated games and games that scored 7's, you know?

madhair60

To be fair those games are invariably more interesting than AAA.

There's a lot of great stuff on GP, but I find it difficult - as with PS+ - to get past the idea that I don't really own it.

For me that works right now though just because I get bored easily so I'm happy to download something and try it for a few hours. Meanwhile I'm currently left cold by Sony's recent output anyway, which to me are just average games but with high quality production values. But because you have to spend a lot of money on them, there's an obligation to see it through to the end, even if you're not having fun.

Although I'd also say it isn't just your average games, since your Forza's/Halo's are on their at launch. A lot of big stuff is on their at launch.

I do suspect this isn't a sustainable model, and it'll all fall apart one day, but they seem very committed to it for the time being.

This literally came out yesterday:

Imagine being the certification bod at Nintendo who approved that. How could you not immediately hand yourself in to the nearest police station?

My favourite VN is Pantsu Hunter - Back to 90s

In fairness; that's on multiple systems I spotted it on Microsoft's store as well, and it's not really porny visual novel type thing, it's a meme horror game.

Nintendo's eshop is full of stuff I can't believe they can get away without age gating. It looks pretty poor when you just casually browsing the new releases and there's shit like "Horny Sucubusses 2"[nb]Only slightly paraphrasing there[/nb] littering it's ranks.

They sort of are really. I am playing a pretty average game called Greedfall and even though it's a bit meh it's still captivating my interest more than anything Ubisoft or EA have produced in the past 10 years.

I got an Xbox One cos it was the cheapest option. Very happy with it.

mobias

The Xbox version of Flight Simulator is looking incredible. You're in for a real treat there. Its on game pass too.

Same, I picked one up for £100 with 3 games last weekend. Bought another 3, got home, set it up and all 6 games were on Game Pass which was a bargain at £1 for 3 months.

I have hardly any friends on it as I never really bothered with the online aspect before but Malcy86 if anyone wants to add.

Drygate

Are there any good arcadey or pick up and play games on the Xbox game pass?

I haven't gamed for years and can't be doing with all those modern games that take ages to play or get into. A nice little 2D platformer or cart racer would be good.

I'm looking at the £20 amonth Xbox S deal but don't want to be tied into game pass for 2 years if there's nothing there forme.

Blue Jam

Bored as fuck with my Xbox. Just started Prey again. Think it's time to get a PS5.

Just bear in mind that games come and go. They usually stay on the service for between six months to a year, save for Microsoft games that stay forever, licensing permitting.

The £20.99/month Xbox All Access isn't that great a deal though. A better way to do it is to buy the console outright on a 0% card and buy the cheap ~£35/year Live Gold cards (when they are available from CD Keys) and convert to Game Pass.

Over 24 months, All Access buys you the console and two years of Game Pass for £503.76.

Buying the console outright, buying three years of Live Gold (at £35 each) and paying £1 to convert to Game Pass comes to £355.99.

Argos Ireland have Resi Evil 2+3 remakes going fairly cheap, so I might pick them up when I can afford it.
