What are the 'rules' for setting an avatar?

I'm sure this has been asked and answered before, tried searching but it doesn't work.

I've now tried 5 permutations of size and format for a picture I want to set as an avatar but every time I enter the link it tells me it's too big or not an avatar.

Can someone tell me what I need to do? Is it a specific size? Specific format? Do I need to do it on a Monday?

On imgur, select 'open image in new tab'
Go to that tab and copy the url
Enter the url in your avatar section (on this site).

That's pretty much what I've done. I'll try again and post pictures of what I get.

It should have ".jpg" or ".png" on the end. If you're having issues with that (and sometimes imgur doesn't like it), feel free to post it here and I'll have a crack.

It "Just Worked" for me on Imgur despite being 208px, the board software has merely put it in a 100px square.  Mine's jpg for what it's worth

EDIT - I think I know what I'm doing wrong, that a URL to a page, not the image. Christ I'm thick.

The link has to end in .jpg or .gif

So on an imgur page or that one you just posted, rightclick the image and select 'open image in new tab'.

For that one you get this in the new tab...

Try setting that as your avatar.  It should work as long as the site blocks direct linking (as some do).
