so far I like the song, not sure what the message is and if the Emperor guy at 1.44 is a bit racist

It’s nothing groundbreaking and it is essentially a bunch of ageing dudes going through the motions doing their best Neil Young impression, but god damn this is great. I love Maiden for this stuff, they know their strengths, they’re not out to reinvent the wheel, it’s hard to say anything else about this except ... it rocks.

Well it's Trump's America, Britain behind with its tattered imperial legacy and China innit (because fuck them too, fair enough) marches toward the last temple of capitalism. Individualism in the form of the Four Eddies on motorbikes defeats them all for a better world. Or some shit.

Scripted by a bloke who's on the record he enthusiastically voted to leave the EU. yeah ok Bruce. The EU isnt great but pulling ourselves out of it just to satisfy some tory backbencher wank fantasies and deregulation for billionaires is far worse. No one under the age of 50 likely to pay fifty quid for your spoken word tour now, you silly old cunt.

Also it genuinely is so much better on x1.25 speed.

Never really been a Maiden fan but I think this sounds good. Seen a few complaining about Dickinson's voice sounding strained but I think it's really impressive he can still sing like that.

Yeah, fun song.

The cunt’s sixty fuckin two, I’d say it’s fair play. I don’t doubt there’s heavy processing on his voice already on this song but he undoubtedly sounds aged here. Personally I like it. It’s about as graceful an ageing process as you’re likely to undergo in his position, when you consider all the factors.

absolute belter, also essentially a Smith/Dickinson composition (Bruce co-wrote that along with Children of the Damned and Run to the Hills, but his contract with Samson means he couldn't get a songwriting credit). Probably The Prisoner had his most input because he played it on his solo tours a lot. The lead lines are pure H though, pretty sure.

always impressed by Dickinson's solo credits for Revelations and Powerslave. what fucking great songs they are.

Revelations is probably my favourite Maiden song. I always thought Nirvana's In Bloom sounded a bit like it.

Lots of weird build up to this (see reddit for all the conspiracy theories around what 'IMXVII'/Balthazar's Feast means), I hope this means there's actually going to be an album at some point.
I really like the video, it looks all Borderlands and has a 2 Minutes to Midnight/Be Quick or Be Dead anti-corporate feel (nice counter balance to Bruce's dumb Brexit words). When the music started I thought "Oh Christ don't let this be it, this isn't the fucking single?" that "bluesy" riff is country as _fuck_ and sounds like Mr Big. Then I got into it. Hope there's another big dumb prog record soon.

It sounds to me a lot like Mother Russia, the closing track from 1990's No Prayer for the Dying - https://youtu.be/R1PQXXR9Q5Q?t=52

Effect. Like Nags I too was pissed but it's been months.

Adding to the Bruce praise here with my usual recommendation for his solo album The Chemical Wedding which is my favourite thing he ever did. Adrian's on that one as well.

I love how tongue in cheek the video is. Every cliche in the gothic book, but deftly woven together into a dreamlike melange, and some real stop motion animation just as it starts to seem like you’ve seen it all. At the same time it’s the type of thing that a teenager might really get into at a thematic level and start theorizing about. Which is good: to quote Tim Heidecker, “teenagers need deep shit too”. I would guess that there will be lot of threads/ video essays explaining “the real meaning” of Writing On The Wall presently.

Could easily name 50 of their other songs that I prefer, which isn't a slant on The Prisoner.

gonna just post Steve's lyrics to Age of Innocence here for bants (Dance of Death, 2003)

Quote
I can't be compromising in my thoughts no more
I can't prevent the times my anger fills my heart
I can't be sympathizing with a new lost cause
I feel I've lost my patience with the world and all

And all the politicians and their hollow promises
And all their lies, deceit and shame that goes with it
The working man pays everything for their mistakes
And with his life too if there was to be a war

So we only get one chance can we take it
And we only get one life can't exchange it
Can we hold on to what we have don't replace it
The age of innocence is fading... Like an old dream

A life of petty crime gets punished with a holiday
The victim's minds are scarred for life most everyday
Assailants know just how much further they can go
They know the laws are soft, conviction chances low

So we only get one chance can we take it
And we only get one life can't exchange it
Can we hold on to what we have don't replace it
The age of innocence is fading... Like an old dream

You can't protect yourself even in your own home
For fear of vigilante cries the victims wipe their eyes
So now the criminals they laugh right in your face
Judicial system lets them do it, a disgrace

Despondent public worries where it all will end
We can't protect ourselves our kids from crime the trend
We cannot warn each other of evil in our midst
They have more rights than us, you cannot call that just

So we only get one chance can we take it
And we only get one life can't exchange it
Can we hold on to what we have don't replace it
The age of innocence is fading... Like an old dream
The age of innocence is fading like an old dream...
it kind of signalled the way the boomer mindset would take us really. makes you think. of course the only lyrics Dave ever wrote were Charlotte the Harlot.

nearly all of Steve's lyrics are boomer-poetry level tbh. Rime is just cribbed off the Coleridge prose annotations, for instance.

a fun fact no one seems to know: his arguably best lyrics, for Hallowed Be Thy Name, are largely lifted from a prog rock band that was managed by Rod Smallwood, Beckett: their 1973 song "Life's Shadow", which also has a midsection that sounds pretty much exactly like The Nomad (2000).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTBmLmYz6A0

I think they bought out what they thought was the sole songwriter back in the 80s, but in the 10s another songwriter claimed he didn't know about it, so they had to settle out of court. I guess Harris thought he owned the song outright so why he mined it for Brave New World without telling anyone.

Also Blaze did have some songwriting on BNW but that was also basically shoved under the carpet. He's a great bunch of lads btw, hopefully can see him again this September. if you like a bit of short punchy metal, check out War Within Me. Satisfying lack of 10-minute epics.

I never got into them but do have fond memories of listening to the Killers album in my mate's bedroom while reading comics when we were about 14, relishing the lyrics about laughing as they watch someone bleed to death. I do also still like the song "Can I Play With Madness", the video featuring one of Graham Chapman's last appearances.

Three "The" songs then. Par for the course.

Interested to hear what they do as always but never really excited. Even when they do shorter songs now they still feel staid and bloated. But i dont begrudge them still recording and touring

edit: added cover and song lengths/writing credits. fuck me they're all long again
