have you ever known of any arseholes who have done something or just gradually changed their ways to the point that you've ultimately had to concede that they are "alright"

I know an arsehole who seems to have mellowed with age, but I think the arsehole is probably still there if push came to shove. People don't really change do they?

Ham Bap

Lived with a housemate years ago who it turned out was a massive arsehole. The whole houseshare fell apart as everyone had enough of him and moved out.

Ive been in his company at times since and would say he's alright now but this is probably because ive only been with him for a 2-3 hour period and not around him long enough to see his arsehole-ness.

wooders1978

Gary Neville - hated him as a player, came across as a really nasty little shit of a man, I think outside of Man Utd fans he was pretty universally disliked - since becoming a pundit however he has really redeemed himself and for my money is one of the best in the business now for really good honest analysis and insight

Echo Valley 2-6809

Those office quizzes where you all bring in a photo of yourself as a child and people have to guess who's who - has anyone ever brought that one in without letting on?

Buelligan

I think Joseph Stalin did once.

Everyone's an arsehole sometimes.  It's what's wrong with everyone, they're an arsehole and they can only see other people's.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

A low bar. I still have several problems with his punditry but he is undoubtedly one of the better pundits.

He was ok on criticising the European Super League and more recently laying into the government and the shit opposition. But then he is also a property tycoon so almost regardless, if you are a property tycoon you are an irredeemable bellend.

QuoteIn a dig at Labour's shadow Cabinet, Cummings tweeted: "I've got a vague idea the woman whose name I can't remember who was Shadow CHX was replaced by someone whose name I also can't remember. And I can't think of ONE idea Starmer has suggested as leader. Not one. And I worked in No10 til recently. So probably means median voter ditto.

"Turns out it's someone called Rachel Reeves whose name rings a vague bell, whose face doesn't, & I can't think of a single thing about her. I don't even know if she voted Remain/Brexit. Do Labour MPs realise Starmer is a total dud & they have *literally no message*?!"

The guy's still a complete wanker but that did make me warm to him a smidgeon.

Hugh Grant seems to be approaching National Treasure status and I'm sure he was perceived as a bit of an arsehole by the majority of people who didn't fancy him.

Steve Coogan?

They do actually and you're right, it's all about getting old, just you wait and see. It might be living to be over 50 so that proper old age and decrepitude is in spitting distance, it might be becoming a grandparent that causes the mellowing but mainly I think it's giving up cocaine.

Shit Good Nose

Robert Fripp was legendary for being annoyed by the fact he actually had fans (an infamous thread that went on for about 15 years on the old King Crimson chat board was titled "I once asked Robert Fripp for an autograph and he vomited on me"), but has spent the last 10 years or so morphing into a cuddly eccentric granddad who loves a bit of whimsy and silliness.  Presumably living with Toyah full time has rubbed off on him (fnarr, etc).

also the whole King Crimson discography went on Spotify a couple of years ago. Ten years ago that would've been about as likely as Rupert Murdoch campaigning for socialism.

Yeah, Davis used to be a big public advocate for Thatcher's government in the 80s. He was at that same conference as Kenny Everett with the big hands and "let's bomb Russia", making some lame joke about "getting rid of the reds" or something similar while Jimmy Tarbuck made a "Oh ho ho, good one" face. I've no idea what his politics are now but he always comes across as a nice enthusiastic bloke who loves his obscure prog and northern soul. His band are supposedly not very "interesting" live but at least he's not out there bum licking the right wing government any more.

Mr Trumpet

Girl who was casually shitty to me in Primary and Secondary school (made me cry on my first residential trip, aged 10) appears to have become a left-wing social campaigner and all-round good egg. It's a little bit annoying actually.

Disgraced MP, John Profumo was considered to have redeemed himself with all the fundraising charity work he quietly got on with after his resignation in 1963. There was also the dignified silence over the whole affair until his death. No exclusive interviews, book deals or appearances on HIGNFY for him.

Self-confessed tory, wasn't he?

Oh right didn't know about that. Politics aside I assumed he was always reasonably personable, compared to some of the unwarranted-egos in snooker.

Japanese kid who forced me to eat my own shit at my Primary and Secondary school (made me cry when he made me wank in public on my first residential trip, age 28) appears to have released some amazing albums since and went on to become the musical director for the Tokyo Olympics. It's a little bit appalling actually.

shiftwork2

When Jimmy Savile died and all that stuff came out about his charity marathons.

I enjoy watching Piers Fucking Morgan's Life Stories.

not a full redemption, more a blip of civility but Michael Winner standing up for the lesbians and calling Littlejohn an arsehole is glorious.

I thought it showed real strength of character when Stewart Lee was interviewed by Adam Buxton and said "you know what? It was mean-spirited and petty of me to say all those things about the Russell comics. I was being a bit of a tosser back then; I have since learnt the errors of my ways, and I sincerely apologise to anyone who may look up to me and who I behaved like a arrogant pissant child towards."

I've not seen it myself, but I don't know a single person who watched it that didn't like it.  And there are a few lifelong Clarkson haters in that lot.

dissolute ocelot

I think Clarkson is more of a transition from OK (in the days when he wrote about cars) to unbelievable asshole then scale it back again.

A good case of "We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be." I think.
