I think a lot of satirists of that era got quite comfortable railing against a specific consensus and a certain type of politics. And then that consensus collapsed and that type of politics fell away, and we suddenly got these "impossible" moments like Brexit and Trump and Corbyn and a resurgent far-right and uppity young people on mass platforms suddenly being really into socialism and identity politics - suddenly that old ground has fallen away and it's scary and disorienting and unpredictable. And so a once great satirical mind is left with no stomach for a fight, pining after great ministerial resignations of yesteryear because at least back then you knew where you were and who was who.

I hate when people just write "THIS" by way of agreement, but THIS.

The mistake is believing that Iannucci was ever against New Labour or the coalition in terms of policy. The only time he ever comes out strongly against any policy is In The Loop's take on Labour's handling of the Iraq war, something which was opposed by many on both sides of the aisle.
I'd  say that's pretty on point. From what I recall of the Armando Iannucci Shows the persona he had was centrist as fuck, very much "I'm just a powerless sensible man in a world that's gone crazy" type shit that never tries to actually pick out any clear targets as to why that is.

A more interesting one in that respect is Stewart Lee, he definitely used to brand himself as a leftist, didn't he? How'd he evolve to the point of praising Jess Phillips? Was it Brexit or was it owning a house? Get the impression he'd quite openly admit his politics aren't as far to the left as he thought if he were asked about it, mind.

I'm not sure he was ever explicitly leftist but I can certainly remember TMWRNJ having a series of jokes about once-radical comedians now descended into comfortable middle age and every single one of them had an SDP mug.

Hislop still doesn't believe he played any role in the rise of Johnson and Rees-Mogg and for that alone he can absolutely fuck right the fuck off.

It's not Ian Hislop's show though, is it? There have to be Tories on that show for balance, and obviously you're going to try and get the entertaining ones.

I've missed this, when did this happen?

I know Herring likes Jess Philips and had her as a guest on his podcast.
(He also joined Labour only to try and oust Corbyn for the ultra centrist Owen Smith too).

When did Lee like the Jess Mess?

Cold Meat Platter

He was praising Dalia Gebrial from Novara Media on one of his recent newsletters, for what it's worth (Stew that is).

Don't know who that is, what does his praise there indicate?

He also gave a shout-out to Kay Burley, Beth Rigby and - wait for it - Yvette Cooper!

Wet Blanket

Lee describes himself as a centrist during his interview on Alexei Sayle's podcast. Although he pronounces it 'centerist'. He made that joke about the Corbyn cabinet looking like tramps near a bin fire in Content Provider too.

Not really, he talks about people describing him as such rather than him identifying as it. Sounded like a joke at the expense of the terms overuse to me.
