I mean, maybe. I expect some of them are, but I don't know Matt Damon.

this was by far the most used insult between lads throughout my teenage school years (2003-2008). i didn't really clock that it was a homophobic slur until later
thought you meant Matt Gaymon for a bit there

Quite enjoyed a couple of those Bourne films, but I wouldn't actively seek out a Damon film.

they promise action and adventure but I saw one and nobody got their insides torn out, waste of time

The 5th Bourne is the most pointless film I've seen, even more than the 4th one (which didn't have Matt Damon). Basically, he ends up in the same situation he was in at the start of the film, as if the previous two hours didn't matter at all. If they make a 6th one you could go straight from the end of the third one and not miss a thing.

shiftwork2

How do you like them fuggin' apples?

Not seeing much wrong with that tbh

Even so. He was 50, not 28, the age at which you might have an excuse for all sorts of things.

Language quickly evolves beneath your feet when you are 50.  We're all going to get it:  say something innocuous at the dinner table, your niece politely excuses herself and then before she's even flushed there will be a definition from slang dictionary dot com sitting on your home screen.

!!!!!!!!!!!Breaking News - jokes are not personal, Gaymon has never used the word!!!!!!!!

Quote
Actor Matt Damon has insisted he has never used a gay slur "in my personal life" after being criticised for saying he'd only recently "retired" the word.

The Hollywood star told The Sunday Times his daughter had rebuked him for using what she called the "f-slur for a homosexual" in a joke "months ago".

In a follow-up statement, the Oscar winner stressed that he had never used the insult against anyone off screen.

"This conversation with my daughter was not a personal awakening," he said.

"I do not use slurs of any kind."

I think we have to assume that his daughter's treatise was apropos of nothing. "Hey dad, I know you're not at all the kind of guy who would, but just in case it's handy to know, here's a word you should never use and some reasons why you should never use it. I'm going back to my room now, OK, cheers, all the best. Bye now, ta, cheers, bye."

Glebe

QuoteShe left the table. I said, 'Come on, that's a joke! I say it in the movie Stuck on You!

Other things Matt Damon believes to be morally acceptable because he did it in a movie:

  • Burgling a casino
  • Strangling a love rival in a row boat
  • Sparking a large scale military rescue operation deep behind enemy lines
  • Appearing in the movie Stuck On You

Zero Gravitas

Eddie Murphy's children furiously collaborating on a monograph.

Gulftastic

I bet Matt's guest appearance on Will & Grace was tense.

When was the first time one of your children presented you with a heartfelt document tailored to persuade you to stop beating your wife?

He should have just blamed Affleck.

It's a Boston thing, isn't it? The word seems very popular there, whenever I hear comedians still use it, it's usually Boston comics like Bill Burr or the disgraced wankbeast. And they'll argue until they're blue in the face that it's not a gay slur, they just use it towards their straight friends when they do something deemed unmanly, without ever making the connection. And guys around their age, and Damon's age, will say they didn't even know that gay men existed when they were kids and started using it, so it can't be homophobic. So fair play to Damon, most people i hear using it seem very, very keen on keeping on being able to do so.

Elderly Sumo Prophecy

He was very convincing as Liberace's little bummer boy in Behind The Candelabra.

this guys chums with Kevin Smith, there's no way he hasn't read paragraphs out loud of just that word for fucking hours at a time like a filibuster

Shoulders?-Stomach!

How anyone seriously thinks that someone who has worked in Hollywood and been in a global industry and been involved at the front of multimedia for 30 years doesn't fully understand the meaning and hurt behind faggot being used as an insult or casually homophobic comment just because of one media mea culpa is frankly extraordinary and beyond belief. He has no excuse at all, and is about mid-noughties onwards late from being able to recover the situation via this method.

It always seemed to me that lots of straight American men have casually used faggot long after gay stopped meaning stupid or lame in the UK despite the former being so blatantly awful and hurtful. They should really fucking stop cos it's massively embarrassing.

Nah, had no idea gay people had faggot shouted at them while they had the shit kicked out of them by insecure bullies  (and closet gays), I am Matt Damon and been exposed to more global culture than most, no, had no idea. SOZ THO

Not sure brains, Matt Damon and faggots work well together.

There was a whole episode of the US Office which centred around Michael Scott's surprising lack of familiarity with the term's offensiveness. "Surprising" in the sense that the joke in 2006 was the implausibility of a middle aged man back then not realising this.

You know when people do things that make other people say the only excuse for their actions are either malice or incompetence? Matt Damon basically has to choose whether he'd rather be seen as a bigot or as David Brent.

I actually don't have kids. It's perfect.

BeardFaceMan

It's not that they are unfamiliar with it being an offensive gay slur, they just don't care because they see the way they use it as separate and distinct, not the same word or meaning at all. Which is bollocks, clearly, but that's the most common defense I've heard of it, a "don't try and tell me what my words mean" thing.
